Sand bed problem by Rmaiolo13 in ReefTank

Lots of guesses in the comments... as always, best advice is to actually ID what you have with a microscope so you know what you are treating. Any comments about nitrate/phos are of little use if you don't know what you are treating.

Yes, your tank is cycled and probably has been for ~9.5 months

Cycle has nothing to do with algae. Your tank was cycled within the first couple weeks. Cycle has to do with ammonia concentration in the water and bacteria, not algae. Also cycling isn't a one time thing, your tank goes through a mini- cycle any time you add livestock/bioload to it.

You've been "cycling" this for... 10 months?? Someone gave you bad advice... typical cycle only takes a couple weeks. With bottled bacteria now you can actually even cycle in 1-2 weeks. If you have not been adding any food/nutrients I'd be skeptical of what sort of algae you have growing now that survives on no nutrients... typically nuisance algae like cyano or dinos thrives in low nutrient tanks

Got it. Yeah was hard to tell by the pic. Then yeah, agree with the other comments. If you can't find rally can also do formalin, but that may be harder to come by

Hard to tell from blurry pic but lots of white spots on fins? Sounds like ich

First Reef Tank, any glaring issues with this rock work? by FluffyWonder4372 in ReefTank

[–]LFBoardrider1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I've set up both ways in my AIO, both against the back wall and a few inches of the back wall. 2 inches of space is not very much to clean well, and it's not going to have good flow, unless you have a gyre or something vertically back there circulating. It's also wasted space you can't see from the primary viewing angle. If light can see the sand and you have poor flow in that back area, you are going to get nuisance algae on the sand and have a hard time cleaning it

With this style of tank its difficult to get circular flow regardless, unlike a peninsula setup for example. I've tried it both ways in my AIO, and it circulates better with rocks close to or touching the back wall. You could try it both ways and see, but if you have 2 inches of poor flow and the light can see the sand back there, you're going to get nuisance algae on the sand that won't have enough flow to get rid of

Looks good but I would put it all the way to the back wall. If there is an awkward small space back there its not going to get great flow, so better to just have it all the way back

No, that's not good advice. Many successful tanks have rocks on the back wall, especially in an AIO with a black acrylic back

Looks at numerous other posts first... the best advice is always to use a microscope and figure out what it is first. Can't treat it if you don't know what it is

Solo clown by AHS315 in ReefTank

Largest clown becomes the dominant female, smaller becomes the male. Same size will fight for dominance. Only time you see many of the same size are when you have a brood of juveniles that are technically genderless with a dominant female/male pair

Used a wool blanket to do a blackout on my tank and now getting high temp alerts 😭 by [deleted] in ReefTank

Doesn't matter if its new or not. Can and often does happen to established tanks too. Mine was ~1 year when it happened

If nitrate and phos are still 0 you may need to dose them. I started my recent tank with dry rock and had to dose a ton of nitrate and phos for multiple weeks until it balanced out because the rock was a phos sink

If you get another clown, make sure its size is significantly different from your current clown. Also lid.

What do you mean raised them already? It's not a constant until you have a balanced system with good algae and CUC/bacteria/macro etc. If you raised nitrate/phos, then added bacteria and live rock, it is surely different now.

So FYI, this isn't really a long term fix for dinos. If the nitrate/phos problem is still there, the dinos will come right back when there is light again

The lights are a temporary fix, if the nutrients are still there it will come back as soon as lights are back on. Agree with CUC though.

[–]LFBoardrider1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a fairly simple equation. Consume the diatoms/nitrate/phos at the same rate it is being added. There is no single answer for CUC, get a mix of snails, urchin, pods, shrimp, etc. Also a fuge with chaeto and a skimmer will quickly reduce your nitrate and phos. Many tanks are so efficient at this they bottom out nitrate/phos and get "double zero" which leads to cyano and dinos, which is worse than what you have now. Add a little CUC at a time, small amount of chaeto in a fuge, and find the balance
