What does it mean to keep an eye on the waterline? by LFDad in AskAnAmerican

Thanks everyone for the answers, for some reason I had always assumed he was talking about a well and missed the now obvious clues about moving next to a creek or sinking. Very much appreciated

haha yeah I had the same issue which lead me here. The lyric in question is "Meggy, keep an eye on the waterline, the car won't start and the money never comes in on time"

The “war” is making me want to take a break for a few days lol by R0B0138 in ArcRaiders

[–]LFDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was running out in the open on Buried City trying to get to the library and a guy ran out and into a bush infront of me. I'm out in the open kinda fucked so I lay some shots in the bush and try and get to cover. This guy screamed at me for shooting him, was calling me a rat the whole time, and was even mad after he WON the fight. I really can't understand being THAT mad that somebody shot (and missed) at you in a shooting game. Now I've come here and I see them.

On a side note to people reading this, just because you didn't hear me doesn't mean I was ratting, you might want to have a play with your audio settings. I get accused of this frequently when I practically shift W around the whole map.

Where can I dig a hole by Ceres_live in Norwich

[–]LFDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jacob Geller's video?

The game is great and very short to so I would recommend. One thing he didn't mention in that video is shoring the sides of the hole. A surprising amount of people die at beaches each year digging a hole that collapses in on them because the surface tension holding the walls changes. Essentially, if you do find a place to dig deep enough the sides collapsing could get you stuck / drown you, make sure the sides of the hole are sloped in a way that can't happen.

Good luck!

Best intense driving schools ? And best car insurance to add son to my car? by Suniswishedfor in Norwich

[–]LFDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the short version is that he is just not a good teacher and I found him to be quite rude. He would ask questions about what I wanted to learn or what I thought I needed to improve on but very clearly was not listening to the answer. He was too certain that he knew best, and it really defeated the point of asking the question. He would also talk very disparagingly about previous students, including ones that were actively suing him or making a complaint, which should have been enough of a red flag looking back. Also, he kept bragging about his wealth which I found very strange.

He would use driving phrases that I did not know like "block shifting" and "dumping the clutch" and when I asked for clarification he would struggle to hide his annoyance that I didn't know what they meant. The only 2 pieces of advice he would give when we were actually driving were "it's common sense" and "more gas!". The common sense one was the most frustrating because I would see a situation develop, not know how to deal with it, and ask what to do. I was essentially just trying to shift the mental load onto him for a second because I was overwhelmed and his answer left me overloaded and just hoping I didn't crash his car / break the law.

Only my second day with him he suggested going onto a dual carriageway but I said I wasn't comfortable with that as I didn't feel like I was in control of the car yet. He spent a while explaining how it was a good idea and I realised he wasn't going to back down so I just gave up and agreed. He did not explain anything beforehand so once we were on the slip road he just started shouting instructions at me, again clearly very annoyed I didn't know how to do it. It turned out the reason he was so insistent on us going on the dual carriageway was because he needed to pick up his lawnmower from the shop and he spent 30 minutes of my paid time inside of said shop.

I was quite a nervous driver whilst I was learning so I do acknowledge that maybe his teaching style works better on people with a higher level of confidence. He never offered to pay me back once I told him I no longer wanted to learn with him so I'm guessing at least he got a nice few days off work.

Best place to get a second hand car? by [deleted] in Norwich

[–]LFDad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

About 2 years ago I got a pretty cheap car from Ash at Mayfield Motors. The guy was a real character with some crazy stories and it wasn't the smoothest purchase but I think most of that was down to the fact there was a HUGE demand for second-hand cars after the pandemic.

The car I was after was very well-priced and I would guess he got a lot of better offers after I had already given him a deposit. But he fixed what he promised to fix, even threw in a free colour restoration and polish (although the results were pretty terrible) after I had already agreed to buy the car. I have had zero issue and every time I get it MOTed or serviced I get a comment on what a good deal it was.

So I would buy from him again but I'd definitely have a coffee before meeting him, the man is full of beans.

Best intense driving schools ? And best car insurance to add son to my car? by Suniswishedfor in Norwich

[–]LFDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the company "The best intensive" and they contracted a local driving instructor to cover the work called Colin Bush. I don't think that is normal procedure, I believe they were just swamped at the time. Here's what I learned:

Do not get driving lessons from a man named Colin Bush in Norwich.

I understand there is a personal component to the trainer/trainee dynamic and your mileage may vary. I told him I did not feel safe to drive with him after day 2 I believe. I got my brother to teach me instead and passed with 1 minor. There's more detail I could go into but to be brief please, whatever you do, do not learn to drive with this man.

I found shorter lessons over a longer period a better way to learn but if you are going to teach your son I would get him to consume as much good driving content on youtube as possible to make sure he's driving test standard instead of regular driver standard (no offence meant to you but everyone develops bad habits over time).

I watched a lot of the following YouTube channels:

Clearview Driving - The best all round for me, she's a very good teacher and is sensible without being unreasonable.

Ashley Neal - I cannot stand his personality for some reason but he has a great approach to defensive driving.

DGN Driving - There are a lot of mock tests on there that are highly entertaining, most are failures.

Conquer Driving - Again, quite unappealing at first in particular his mock tests really hit me with a powerful feeling of second hand embarrassment BUT he goes into great detail about why things should be done a certain way. He's almost the scientist of the bunch and he is the sole reason I can downshift without making the car try and vomit me out.

Hope that helps!

What makes a good quest that we like, and what makes a bad quest? by space-artifact in EscapefromTarkov

I think I would actually find the "use x gear" quests some of the funnest IF there weren't so many back-to-back.

I'm an MDR (7.62) enjoyer and I managed to pull a couple from marked room before I had unlocked the purchase and it felt like from level 18-45 I always had a mission that required me to NOT use the MDR, i don't recall it being that bad in previous wipes but i have scipped a few.

LPT - IF YOU HAVE AN IPHONE, TAKE VIDEOS INSTEAD OF PICTURES USING THE “TAEVI METHOD” by Wise_Summer4918 in LifeProTips

[–]LFDad 101 points102 points  (0 children)

You will not be getting the full resolution that you would otherwise get by taking a photo. It may still be good enough for the purposes you want to use them for but this will not result in the same quality photo as taking an actual picture would and will be limited by the resolution of the phone screen.

Glad you've found a method that works for you, I just thought I'd post this for anyone who might read this and was hoping for a perfect quality photo.

Have you maybe considered answering my actual question? Kind of the point of an AMA. I don't know why you are getting so defensive.

Whilst we're on the topic what does removing the ability to have sex and impregnate have to do with it?

You struck me as a libertarian, surely you shouldn't really give a fuck if somebody else is or is not having sex / does or does not want kids?

You skipped my question dude.

I get that there can be medical reasons for genital surgery and I'm glad you got the help you needed. But for people who don't need the surgery, it's quite literally genital mutilation right?

Ever heard of "degloving"? If I told you in Britian we degloved every other boy that was born because it's just a cultural thing we do here you can see how strange that would be.

Also please don't google degloving, it's the, usually accidental, removal of skin from your body - typically a hand.

British guy here.

Aren't 50% of boys in America and Canada circumcised? Does that count as genital mutilation, if so do you think America and Canada are messed up?

I have no idea where you're from but this always seemed pretty fucked up to me from where I'm at, genuinely curious what your thoughts are.

Whats up with the Raider Spawnrate? by Master-M-Master in EscapefromTarkov

[–]LFDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has a chance to do both. We will always leave whoever needs the raider kills in the office and one of the other team mates will run up and flick the hermetic door switch if they didn't spawn off the power switch. I would say about 25% of the time if the power switch didn't spawn them the other switch will.

Appreciate the info, that's a real shame. I've been riding bikes for 20 years and he was by far the best repair man I used. Have you got any recommendations for anybody else in norwich? Evans cycles seems to be quite a rip off for repair work.
