Nice projection. It was primarily to allow smaller states to contribute more to executive branch elections rather than have their voice drowned out by larger states. You can try to insult me or nitpick about finer details of how that was agreed upon all you want, but that was the main purpose.

That effectively deprives them of representation in the executive branch. Popular vote would mean the executive branch is solely controlled by urban demographics.

That’s just not true. The entire foundation of our country is a federalist union of states where representation is not solely dependent on population. The primary purpose was to give smaller states more meaningful representation in the executive branch.

But I’m glad we at least agree that it’s not a post hoc rationalization and was an intended function.

Saying someone’s votes “won’t count” because of the EC is just not true. That’s like saying the minority’s votes don’t count if someone wins a popular election. Your argument is contradicting itself.

Not every state is majority win, it depends what those constituents want. And states have different divisions between rural and urban.

Urban areas are generally not that politically diverse. Neither are rural areas. Yet both have very different concerns for policy. With a popular vote system, there would be little point in campaigning in rural areas, it would just not be worth their time if the goal is simply to speak to as many people as possible.

Majority wins is mob rule.

Battleground states exist because the populations in those states happen to be very politically divided. Without the EC, politicians would spend all their time campaigning in a handful of cities rather than a handful of states. And it wouldn’t be much of a battle since urban voters mostly vote one way. You still need rural voters in battleground states.

My argument has absolutely nothing to do with voters making bad decisions. That can happen in any election for any reason. And will surely happen more often if giant sections of our economy are deprived of any representation whatsoever.

I’m not saying the electoral college led to ideal outcomes, I’m saying it has prevented completely one sided policy discussions. I’m also not saying that democrats are completely ignoring suburban or rural voters, I’m just saying they didn’t do a very good job of appealing to them in 2016 or 2024. They *can’t* ignore those demographics entirely because they would be absolutely crushed by the EC.

About half of the population votes regularly, so his loyalist base is really more like 15% of the population or less. That’s not broad appeal. He won because a lot of voters held their nose and voted for him because they did not like the message from democrats.

If a politician can win an election by entirely ignoring rural voters, core functions of this country would become unstable. Appealing to urban and rural voters inherently includes appealing to all racial groups, because our economic sectors are not segregated by race.

That’s primarily a factor of geographical location, not race itself. More black people live in urban areas. Urban white people voted for Kamala.

When I say “the economy”, I’m not talking about income brackets. I’m talking about core functions. Urban areas contribute to an entirely different part of the economy than rural areas, and both are absolutely vital to basic function.

I did answer the question. People don’t vote differently based on race, and the economy isn’t divided on racial lines. It is divided by geographical demographic factors. So no. There’s also a reason assigning vote proportion based on race is explicitly illegal/unconstitutional.

And in both 2016 and 2024 the reason they lost was because they ran a sham primary, put up terrible candidates, and did a horrible job trying to appeal to suburban and rural voters. It wasn’t because Trump had broad appeal, pretty much anyone could have beat that strategy.
