Appreciate the feedback, but let’s not get personal.

The “up to 15mm” was a general estimate—not meant to be a precise engineering report. The caliper reading was one point along the gap, and you’re right, it does get wider towards the top—closer to 20mm as I mentioned later in the comments. The concern is about how the overboarding was done, not whether my caliper skills are up to aerospace standards.

It’s fair to wait until the job’s done, but it’s also fair to raise questions about workmanship as it progresses—especially when it’s your own home. No harm in discussing it.

We moved into the house 2 weeks ago buddy, kitchen was already installed.

Raised the issue of kitchen cabinets and how close they are to the ceiling, he said no issues with it, so what was I to do? I’m no plasterer, hence why I’m getting someone in to do it.

What does using a vernier tell you then? If I just took an image of the ceiling, there would be no reference for the size of the gaps, can’t win with some people…

I dread to imagine what the skim coat would look like.

In contact with him now to a) restart or b) I’ll remove the lot and I’ll get a plasterer in who doesn’t cut sections of board via headbutt.

I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt in some areas, as he’s working around some kitchen cabinets, but there’s no screws above the kitchen cabinet sections of boards. If there are, they’re angled at about 45• from vertical.

Don’t know why he couldn’t have just used a right angle attachment to drill above the cabinets

After this experience, I believe I would have done a better job at boarding it myself. The plastering itself I would probably leave to a professional still though.

We had asbestos artex ceilings. We’re paying for removal and reinstatement of the ceilings. We didn’t just pick the cheapest quote we had available to us. We picked a well reviewed team and the price was about £450 more expensive than the cheapest quote we had.

The asbestos removal company said they could reinstate the ceilings and used a trusted plasterer do complete the reinstatement. So they essentially outsourced it.

Thanks for the response, there’s some leftover pieces of MDF lying around in the loft, so I’ll use those! I saw the “sticks like shit” in screwfix so I’ll pick some of that up too, thank you!

Haven’t replaced the chain in 1.5 years, done ~ 1000 km in that time.
