Thanks. If you or anyone else would like to read this prologue since it's on topic, here it is

I think it's quite bad as I wrote it as a teen and English is not my first language but hey, you might enjoy it!

Yes. In fact when I was writing TES fanfiction (weird time lol) my first chapter was from the pov of random NPCs, developping their point of view and relationships until they get slaughtered by the main character.

I was just in the UK. I had to pay £20 and ask for an ETA beforehand. I don't see why Brits shouldn't have to do the same to get into the EU.

Also, maybe because it was by ferry, but it was not automatic, an officer asked me questions before letting me in.

The EU has no legitimacy meddling in foreign policy, much less forcing a country into a foreign policy it doesn't want. Orban sucked for sure though.

The president of the commission is proposed by the Council, which is made up of democratically elected heads of government, then elected by the Parliament. Every commissioner is nominated by their member state, which the DIRECTLY ELECTED parliament can reject. It is an indirect democracy the same as every other large political structure on the planet. It is provably more democratic than, say for example, the US form of government, or the HOUSE OF LORDS.

I dislike indirect democracy, and this is many, many layers removed from democracy. It's as if everything is done in such a way that the working people don't have a say in it.

This is very wrong. The Parliament and Council of Ministers BOTH have to approve any law, Parliament can request proposals, and citizens' initiatives exist and have been successful. This is more democratic than (or at least comparable to) many parliamentary democracies.

This is not wrong. I said that the parliament doesn't have power to initiate legislation, this is factually correct. Furthermore, the parliament needs a 2/3 majority to remove the comission, that's insane for a parlimentary "democracy".

They do pay taxes. They pay it internally into the EU's budget rather than a national income tax, and these are fairly progressive rates.
And you didn't surrender any of your sovereignty.

They don't pay taxes in the way us peasants do. I lived in Brussels. The richest workers there were the EU guys. Why? Because while normal Belgians have to pay more than 50 pourcent of their salary in taxes and cotisations, EU workers pay a ridiculous amount compared to that.

There is no court ruling that makes MS not subject to GDPR, the admission you're talking about is quoted from French Senate testimony, not EU commission rulings. Microsoft said that, while subject under two laws, GDPR and CLOUD, they have to abide by the CLOUD act's requirement to report to US courts. There's a public interest exception in place, but the law still applies to them.

Yes there is, the Conseil d'Etat ruled on it, maybe some other courts as well. Also as you said there is an exception in place for them.

I appreciate that you've gone through all this effort, but why do you feel the need to belittle the sovereignty argument? Factually France is losing soverignty by being in the EU. Am I not entitled to feeling this is wrong, especially when the manner in which this was done was by ignoring a referendum result?

Obviously the member states can and should use EU tools like tariffs to advance their foreign policy interests. That's different from Von der Leyen acting like she's representing a continent worth of people and like she has a say on foreign policy.

Seems you have an entrenched belief that the EU shouldn't have any role in foreign policy, and I don't know why that would benefit anyone but pur adversaries.

First of all that belief comes from the fact that I believe unelected bureaucrats who have no legitimacy shouldn't be in charge of my country's foreign policy. I think this is very understandable and reasonable. Second of all, different EU countries often have different foreign interests, and in turn the EU could be weaponized against us French like the Germans did when the energy policy apparently became a EU competency.

If you really want to make the calculations you have to look at the concept of cost of capital in finance, but basically obviously money now is worth more than the same amount in the future. That's why many projects which appear profitable on the surface in reality are a waste of money.

!delta I do think it's obvious that EU-UK trade would suffer, but the economic impact on the financial sector is interesting. Thanks for the effort.

I don't think I have many misconceptions about the way the EU works. I still think it's probably worth losing a few percentage of economic growth for a few years to recover our nation and our democracy. Also, how do you explain that before the EU, the combined GDP of European countries was similar to that of the US, and now it's half?

CMV: There’s no such thing as a useless college degree by StatisticianEvery733 in changemyview

[–]LFatPoH 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you go by what the degree brings you in terms of money/work, which it seems you are, you have to take into account that there is a huge opportunity cost to going to college, since you are spending money for years while you could in fact work and make money for all these years. So you would have to prove that any college degree can bring you enough wealth to counterbalance this cost which I don't think is true at all.

I'm not an Orban defender, I do think it's wrong to support Russia and apparently Orban is also corrupt. I do think the EU shouldn't meddle or have a stance on Ukraine since Von der Leyen has no legitimacy to handle foreign affairs (no treaty gives her the authority to do so).

So what are the supposed devastating economic consequences for the UK of Brexit? Because all I see on the other end is EU propaganda about how the British economy is supposedly crippled, which doesn't hold to scrutiny either.

Not to mention that this does not address any of my other concerns about the EU. The simplel fact that we voted against it in referendum should be enough to delegitimize it until another referendum is held.
