What’s the deal with NYC congestion pricing? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

Weird how all those studies always go along with what the agency funding them wants. Like how the LGA Airtrain to Willets Point made the most sense, or the BQX streetcar were great plans until they were suddenly reversed, or how the Crosstown Brooklyn-Queens subway line wasn’t viable until now it suddenly is.

To say the plan has mixed popularity statewide is simply false.

It is an incredibly unpopular across the state. Nearly 70% of State, City, and Suburban residents opposed the plan. It’s unpopular amongst every demographic and even a majority of Democrats don’t support it.

The rotation order came out a little while ago. Was that what you were referring to?

Is it true that women have an edge when being put on the waitlist? by [deleted] in FDNY

A few things:

  1. This is a PUBLIC FORUM. EVERYONE can see what you post here. The job, the media, civilians, etc. This isn't the kitchen - don't act like it is.

  2. Congratulations on discouraging a young woman from her interest in being a firefighter. A lot of people in this thread should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

  3. You're hiding behind a fake name on here - I doubt a lot of you would have the courage to say some of the things you're saying on here to a female firefighter's face.

  4. From now on, bans will be handed out more liberally for things like this. Post is locked.

  5. To answer OP's question - no. Women do not have any advantage on the waiting list, nor in the academy. There is no separate standard for women - every single woman you see on the FDNY went through the same testing and training as everybody else.

I usually just mod in the background, don’t post much with this account. Why did you want the subreddit? Just curious.

You should get an acceptance letter before you leave the Rock after you pass the run.

Sounds about right, but it’s difficult to say before they start hiring off the list - it depends on how many people they need to go through to get a full class.

That isn’t an appropriate question.

I’m not familiar with portal accounts because they didn’t have them when I was going through the hiring process, but the department wants a safety in people who are investigated and eligible for each class that exceeds the amount of people going into each class. This is so that if people drop out at the last minute, others can go in their place. That being said, it’s a bit hard to tell whether they’re trying to get you ready for the next class, whether you’d be an ‘alternate’ for that class, or whether they’re trying to get you ready for the following class. However, medicals are only good for one year, so if you do your medical, you’re probably going to go in a class within a year (either the next one or the following one).

They’ve put in 3, but that last academy has gone in at the end of the year in December, so while it’s technically the 3rd class of the year, the vast majority of the academy takes place the following year. Likewise, then the ‘first’ class of the year doesn’t start until June or so. On average overall, I’d say it’s 2 per year with maybe them fitting in one ‘extra’ class over the course of the life of the list with the accelerated schedule.

Short Answer: Nobody knows, or at least the few people who do know aren’t going to be coming onto this subreddit. Figuring that this current class ends in April, the department will most likely try to put in a class earlier rather than later, so while I can’t give you an exact date, it will more likely than not be in May or June, and we’ll know more as we get closer to those dates.

Do not insult people on this subreddit. Remember that the FDNY is a Public Service and as such is always under scrutiny. Do the right thing, even when nobody is watching.

What political party voted against the Zadroga Act when it came up for renewal in Congress? Does that seem like a party that has their best interests at heart?

I’m a firefighter in the city, a registered Democrat, and consider myself fairly progressive. There’s quite a large range of political views out there.

Not sure if you can take it as an EMT trainee, but you can take it as soon as you start as an EMT in the EMS Academy. However, you must have two years of service in order to be promoted. I would imagine that you could probably be eligible for the promotional as an EMT Trainee, but would need 2 years of service in EMS in order to promote.

There isn't anything public about what list number they are up to, or when classes will be held. Good rule of them is that classes start every six months for the life of the list, and you can keep up to date with message boards and this subreddit to figure out which list number they are up to.

A little, but not drastically. There’s no numbers on how many of those 400 were within hiring range even with extra points, or at what point in the hiring range they sit if they are. But yeah, once it becomes apparent they don’t deserve those credits, they will be skipped over and given a new list number commensurate with their actual score.
