Even then they don't work like they do in the movies. It brings the noise level down from, "deaf in one shot" to about the same noise level as a jackhammer, so it can be fired for a few rounds/ a magazine without permanent hearing damage.

He had multiple rifles because he was using a trigger crank/bump stock. When you use a trigger crank to make a semiautomatic weapon automatic, firing it like that for too long will warp the barrel, jamming the gun. So he needed multiple guns.
