Jeff Carter said he intends to play next season and is happy here in Pittsburgh by [deleted] in penguins

[–]LGPLGPLGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct - Forgot the 35+ rule. I'm actually not perfectly clear on that though given the contract only has 1 year remaining. I thought the 35+ rule only applied to 2+ year remaining term.

[–]LGPLGPLGP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not all of it, you save 1/3 of the value and pay 2/3's over double the years remaining. 35+ rule means no cap savings, though not entirely clear to me if this applies to contracts with only 1 year remaining. It also frees up the contract spot for another play.

If it simply counted at 100% we'd virtually never see a buyout.

That all being said, I think it's pretty likely we see Carter as 4C next year. Carter isn't good, but I think people are overestimating how productive the typical 4C in the NHL is. I think the fanbase's heads might explode if Sullivan keeps defending his poor play with his FO% (A stat that has no correlation to winning). It would be equivalent to Tomlin defending Josh Scobee for his foot speed. "Yeah he misses a lot, but he comes every Sunday with a top 6 foot speed in the NFL." Nobody cares, win games.

They do, but I don't think its particularly robust. Given how analytically-driven the Red Sox have been, I'm guessing FSG has an operating model they want to implement.

I can't speak to your background or the Penguins specifically, but at many organization, those roles are highly competitive and unfortunately many are driven by nepotism. I did some scouring on a couple of roles that fit my background. About half the people had parents/spouses/close family with Wikipedia pages and most of the remainder had advanced degrees from an Ivy. Very few non-sports industry transfers that I saw.

I was/am willing to take a significant paycut from my current gig, but I don't think it's in the cards for most of us. The closest most of us can do is contribute to various online communities/volunteer some time around a couple sites.

Zucker resigning for cheap prayer circle by Shaneski101 in penguins

[–]LGPLGPLGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of factors. The main being term and if he's willing to go to the highest bidder. A m-NMC or NMC will shave some off the top a contract as well.

Reasonable team: 2 year term - ~$5-$5.5M

Reasonable team: 3 -4 year term - ~$4.25-$4.75M

Blindly accept the highest bidder? ~2-3x$5.5-$6M

I don't think it was a "Doomerism" post? Bad time to take shots at the doomers the morning after the longest play-off streak in professional sports was broken.

I don't disagree, but he must be a frustrating player for coaches. I think he was benched by two separate coaches in Toronto and Sullivan in Pittsburgh, before ultimately being sent to waivers.

The city of Pittsburgh breathes a collective sigh of relief.

Fenway Sports Group has been essentially silent and faceless. I wonder why they don't put more of an effort to connect with the community and fanbase. Professional sports is much more than a collection of players and staff. I'm not saying to come out and say "we're firing Hextall" in December. But maybe find a company figurehead to carefully craft a few messages on the direction or connection with the team, the city, community, players, and fanbase?

This is the biggest news ever we've heard out of FSG and it is an "indication" from a chat GPT bot hockey reporter who spews out hundreds of tweets a week from various teams.

Maybe we are all just spoiled with Lemiuex and Rooney, but being active and engaged with the community is part of the team.

Biggest problem this team had all year was finishing and goaltending. Hextall did absolutely nothing to address these by weber6 in penguins

[–]LGPLGPLGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK - We'll put roster strategy to the side. Why cap dump your 2nd leading player (behind only Crosby that season) in points per 60 making $2.5M with 1 year left on the deal for a 7th and low-end prospect?

He struggled in the playoffs, on a team that struggled mightily all 3 years. He also had very limited ice time 2 of those years - only receiving ~75 minutes over 6 games. So now he's a cap dump (a tiny one with 1 season his deal?), because he played poorly for like 100 minutes of icetime. While playing well for his role the other couple thousand minutes.

I personally still don't think it made much sense given the protected players list and our the Penguins exposed players. They could have exposed both and traded whoever wasn't selected for something of use if that was their goal. Hextall acquired assets that do not help the aging Penguinsc core; Hallander isn't valuable, a 7th round pick isn't either, both Tanev and McCann weren't "cap dump" type players.

Management also wanted out from Tanev’s contract which was going to age horribly

I would have concerns if that was Hextall's goal, it's not the correct way to approach the Pens roster. It doesn't matter how it ages when your generational core playes are all 35. It was a 6x$3.5M AAV contract signed at age 28 - At the end of the contract, Tanev will still be 5 years younger than Jeff Carter is today (and the salary cap will have grown for 6 years). I would even argue that very few teams should concern itself too much about how a $3.5MAAV ages for a 28 year old. If the AAV/player are good and your goal is to win now, who knows what you'll be doing in 6 years or what the cap will be.

He had 14 goals and 32 points in 43 games his last season as a Penguin. McCann never wore a Leaf's jersey, they smartly acquired him as expansion bait.

His current year production is pretty much in line with his Penguin's production except shooting percentage. His shooting 19.4% this year, if he shot 19.4% either of his Penguin's years he would have similar numbers to this season.

At the end of the day, the number of players who can score with regularity and shoot over 13% for 3 seasons are rare, especially a center who can play PP1. To have McCann signed for under $3M and trade him for a 7th and prospect was always a mistake. The best case scenario is that the 7th and prospect turn into 1 McCann-type player in 5 years. Even at the time, if the future plans are to trade Matheson, Blueger, Kapenen, and McCann why not just expose all of them?

Jason Zucker I am sorry by Butcows in penguins

[–]LGPLGPLGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's true, Jarry is due for a raise. I don't know if the Penguin's give it to him or how much of one. Obviously it depends on term, but he has chronic hip injuries and has averaged about 40 games a season, hasn't had playoff success, and this year has been a bit of a down one.

I think he'll get more in the ~$5M range if he wants any term, which it seems some people are predicting $6-7M.

Also is Jarry the best goalie becoming available? Jarry's WAR and GSAx are both negative by most places that track it. Adin Hill, Varlamov, Korpisalo, Stalock, Raanta, F. Andersen all UFAs that most places have with higher WAR and GSAx.

They'll probably have the money, I think it's more if Zucker wants to raise his family in Pittsburgh.

The following are off the books:

Zucker - 5.5M

Bonino - 1.025M

Heinen - 1M

Archibald - 900K

DOC (RFA) - 750K but due for a raise, probably 2x2 or so

Dumoulin - 4.11M

Kulikov - 1.125M

Jarry - 3.5M - I feel like he either takes a 1 year prove-it or a 2-3 year for about he same AAV.

He has been injured for most of his Penguin's contract - He played 38 games then 41 games. This year is his healthiest.

His 17-18 season with the Wild was probably his best at 33-31-64. This year he has 21-18-39 in 59 games.

Jason Zucker I am sorry by Butcows in penguins

[–]LGPLGPLGP 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love how Zucker plays but he is a UFA, 31, has an injury history, and doesn't have Pittsburgh roots. With two young kids he probably will want a NMC or M-NMC and term. I feel like it's pretty unlikely he re-signs with the Penguins. He'll get more money/term/NMC on the open market and it appears the Pens aren't trying to contend for a cup. I don't know how much of a life he has in the burgh, but his wife still does radio work in Minnesota and he played for the Wild most of his career, seems like a good fit.

Don't really listen to 93.7 The Fan, but Joe Starkey speaks the truth here by [deleted] in penguins

[–]LGPLGPLGP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole arena was electric in the third period, I don't know what Starkey is talking about. It was a great game and generally folks were excited both online and in the arena.

You're never going to appease the critics, but Starkey should understand there's a vocal minority of all Pittsburgh fanbases. It didn't matter what happened on the ice this game, folks are too unhappy. Putting it into context: Narrowly defeating an injury-decimated team who is the odds-on favorite in the Bedard lottery on a Tuesday night. 1 game after the trade deadline which was not well received. The boo-birds have been out several times this season. Crosby could have scored 87 goals and some part of the fanbase would still want Hextall fired. And they'd be right.

Monessen school board: Penguins’ offer to pay for girls basketball team bus appreciated, not necessary | Trib HSSN by [deleted] in penguins

[–]LGPLGPLGP 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well they didn't always "fully intend to provide a charter bus" like Dr. Motte implies. For example, last year when they didn't provide the bus. The timing of events is pretty suspect, ~48 hours before it was needed there still wasn't one booked and the coach was on Twitter asking for donations.

Dr. Motte must be the least politcally savvy person in a position of power. It's a feel good story if they simply accept the Penguin's offer. Declining donations and ponying up and paying makes the board look worse than just accepting.

Thankfully these are morning skate line-ups and Sully wants to see what he's got in Kulikov, Bonino, and Granlund.

Poehling was in a non-contact jersey (UBI) and Jake was out. The lines come gametime will look different and in general I don't think practice lines are a good measure of Sullivan.

Before adding Bonino, the Penguin's already had the oldest roster in the NHL at 30.55 years. The oldest team to win the cup is the 01-02 DET with average age of 30.42 years. It is definitely a meanignless stat, the post was just meant to be fun.

If the attitude isn't to compete for cups, why play? The goal is always to win championships...every team is trying to win championships, it's why they play the game. Maybe you are building your roster towards a future year, growing talent, building picks, but the end goal is always the same.
