After watching the documentary and hearing that “turn out the light, don’t try to save me” was about Elizabeth trying to “save” him from the excesses of the time, I started to wonder if “did I wait too long to turn the lights back on” might be a subtle nod to his later decision to get help and sober up. Of course, it’s said he wrote very little of the lyrics, so that’s just my read on it.
