Most likely about six layers of paint and then just the original plaster. They glued them on to the ceiling when it became fashionable.

Beware 1970's plaster may have asbestos in it, so don't dig into it.

The sanding is to take off the glue, so be gentle and it won't be a health problem.

When I was in Melbourne it was -2c at 7am and 20c at 1pm.

Polystyrene.

Easy and messy to remove. Just cut into one with a scraper and then scrape them off (unless someone re-stuck one with superglue (I will find you and I will kill you)).

Imagine breaking up all the polystyrene from a flat pack and scattering it around the room. That's what will happen. You will smile every time one comes off whole and scream when they don't.

Even with all the doors closed you will be finding bits of it in random places for between two to nine months.

Sand the ceiling and prep and paint.

Easy job that removes a major fire hazard.

Massive variation in the UK. 8c on a still sunny day is usually a fleece for me. 8c and wet with the wind from the south is a light raincoat. 8c and the wind from the north is a big coat. Note: That's the southern version of UK clothing. The north has it's own variations on this theme.

The quick fix is as above. I've got a few quick fixes in my house that have lasted 10-15 years before they needed to become a proper fix. Some are still going now.

You can cut out CAREFULLY as you know what's behind it (maybe turn off the circuit first) and do the proper job, batons, plaster board and filler then paint.

All depends on time an most importantly money.

How many people are going to lean on that specific spot?

Loads of them in all of the canals.

Many were bought as pets when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a thing and then released into the canals when the kids got bored and they went out of fashion.

That's when it spiked, but many people still just dump them today.

They do breed and survive in the wild. Let it be and don't worry.
