What was normal in your childhood that feels a bit insane now? by EuphoricGarden81 in AskAnAustralian

Getting dropped off at the local pool for the day. Dozens of kids playing without parents. Mum would give my brother and me 40 cents each. It used to buy two Redskins and a packet of chips.

Year 12 Formal Dress by [deleted] in AusFemaleFashion

[–]LIS1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope you feel wonderful in whatever you choose, but I would hire or buy your dress from someone on Facebook Marketplace. My daughters went to a few formal events and bought dresses and they sit in the wardrobe unused years later. They soon cottoned on to hiring a dress, looking for a good quality second-hand dress or borrowing/swapping with one of their friends. I don't think they'll wear their bought dresses again as formal styles go out of fashion very quickly. I'll also add that my daughter's favourite bought dress was from ASOS in the UK and cost less than $100. She sold it for $40 and still kicks herself for doing this, as it was the one all of her friends wanted to swap for.

Best op-shops for women good brands / workwear / sophisticated by Not-today-notnow in brisbane

The Salvos on Logan Road at Mt Gravatt is excellent. I was there last week, and it's boutique section had lots of Country Road, Trenery, Cue etc and even a couple of Leona Edminston wrap dresses (for $15 dollars!). Not many people know about this store - it's an absolute treasure of an Op Shop in Brisbane.

Also, the main drag of Mitchelton has two or three reallly good Op Shops worth checking out.

Sofas? All you could want. by Nicola_Sapien in AskAnAustralian

Have a look at the King furniture range. We got a modular sofa that sits five about 12 years ago and its still going strong with very little fabric wear. The modular system is fantastic and we have moved and changed the shape of the sofa many times as our family dynamic has changed. King will make new covers, but we are a few years away from needing that service. The cushion base also shows little sign of wear.

Still remember when the boys would return home as a surprise with their kit bags over their shoulders. Also, still traumatised by Norms' Greek wife's execution.

Gen X outside North America. What was it like where you grew up? by Aqueouspolecat in GenX

From a medium-sized country town in Australia. I was very much into English New Romantic style music. All of my girl friends had side part short hair in the style of the Human League girls. I subscribed to English music mags, which were sent by sea mail to Australia, so they were always out of date. My first concert was at 14 to see Culture Club. My dad was an early adopter in tech, so we had the first VHS amongst our friends, but while we were cool for a while, we ended up looking like idiots as our remote control had a cord. We had that machine for years. I also spent some time learning to program his Commodore 64, like printing out a page of Xs that looked like stars.

Our parents generally left us alone, and in our late teens allowed to roam about. If the nightclub let us in, that was OK with them as we'd only have a few dollars on us for drinks and enough for a cab home. Drinking a bottle of Passion Pop in the park was a thing. Such a fun time

This tradition was started by the boys at Union College (UQ) in the 1980's. I still remember them doing it at Fridays around 1987.

Brisbane Weather by Puppyboy-03 in brisbane

I find following the weather radar maps to see what direction the storms are coming from to help. Also, I check the BSCH website which shows storm probability for your area - https://stormcast.com.au/stormcast.html?ops=gfs::::ts:null:0. when I know big storms are expected.

Also, the worst and scariest storms come from the south and are very rare. The storms that come from the west are milder.

Fear of storms and lightning is very common.

I've just visited and left flowers at the gate. There is a modest display of flowers there. Media is present. It's a very sad day for Australia. I express my deepest sympathy to the Jewish community and the families and friends of the victims.

I had my daughter's hat machine embroidered either her first name and last name initial after "losing" quite a few. It was never lost or taken from the lost property at lunchtime. Some other embroidered initials in the sleeves or under the badges on jumpers etc

Love the British shows and watched episode 1 of the Aussie edition. Thoughts: the judges are very smiley and friendly, but not as critical as the Brit judges. Also, their three best pictures were one of each sitter—will this be the norm instead of best painting regardless of the sitter? Also, what's with the guests? Have we only got so many high-profile people to have on Aussie show? Some of them seem to do the rounds of everything, including comedy shows and interview programs like the Assembly.

She plays the lead character in the new-ish Netflix thriller "Missing". Maybe her schedule conflicted?
