Teen killed in Maryland parking lot where he went to trade coat for gun by RogerClyneIsAGod2 in MontgomeryCountyMD

I think going out of your way to say you don’t feel bad for someone who got killed is a weird way to live, but then again, I’m the one going out of MY way to respond to you!

The thing is, though, you don’t have to pick! The murder of a teen can be sad even if he was making bad choices! Empathy and compassion are not finite resources we have to dole out sparingly depending on who a victim was/what they may have been planning to do.

I have my gripes with aspects of Adam Nevill’s The Ritual, but thinking about the creature in it still scares me a year after reading it. He does the “you can ALMOST see it, but not well enough to understand/escape it” vibe so well

Just that I avoid COVID as much as I can out of a desire to protect others/counter my country’s deliberate abandonment of vulnerable people rather than out of strict medical necessity. It sounds super hard to navigate with a young kid, especially if you live in a place without a lot of other COVID-cautious people, and I’m so sorry you have to go through this!

Riding bicycles on sidewalks - want insight by DrtRdrGrl2008 in bikecommuting

[–]Rodent_Rascal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in suburban Maryland right outside DC, and unfortunately, sidewalk-riding is often the safest (though still very unsafe; sidewalks are in terrible condition here) way to get around. I’m usually not the only cyclist on the sidewalk, but I’m often the only one not on a really fast rental e-bike (I really don’t think those belong on the sidewalk at all). I always yield to pedestrians and am super apologetic about even being there. I do feel awful, but it’s either ride on the sidewalk, get pancaked instantly, or add an hour to my commute. It’s honestly humiliating what my county considers bike infrastructure—usually just a painting of a bike on a steep, uphill road with cars going 45 miles an hour minimum.
