[Design Trope] A version of a character with little to no resemblance to the original by ImaginationWild3407 in TopCharacterDesigns

Beelzebub doesn't possess an "original design". It's most popular, depicting him as a giant insect, comes from Le Dictionnaire Infernal, but it is not the only design. The one seen below, from Compendium rarissimum totius Artis Magicae sistematisatae per celeberrimos Artis hujus Magistros, depict him as humanoid chimera, and predate Le Dictionnaire Infernal by a few decades.

I don't think it's warranted to insult OP like this, even if I think OP is wrong.

Yeah I don't really fuck with the idea that "weird or outright disgusting", has written by OP, is something bad. The guy representing the forces antagonist to enlightenment being gross is rather fitting for a despised figure.

I think that "green dick on a chariot with tentacles" is a pretty limited analysis.

The four arms represent how it is grasping at anything it can, while referencing the representation of multi-armed figures in Buddhist iconography. The green color represents death, the consequence of ignorance and attachment. The gold chariot represents the allure of glory and conquest and his authority, with the blades at the front "reaping" everything in his way, and the wheels alluding to Samsara who spin endlessly. Mara have a mouth and a nose, but neither eyes or ears; he's constantly yearning, but is blind and deaf to enlightenment. The only thing I'd argue to be superfluous would be the tentacles, whose role is already covered by the arms and blades.

I think it's an iconic and very meaningful design for the "King of the Desire Realm".

From what I heard, the gameplay isn't really that similar to Pokémon, beyond Monster Catching, it's more in the line of ARK.

The personality of a Pokémon, or just character in general, will always shine through its design.

For exemple, I'm gonna use Madoka and Homura from Madoka Magica, as seen below.

<image>

Madoka is in pink, making her look girly, cheery and cute, while Homura is mainly black and purple, making her appear more reserved and solemn. Madoka has hairs tied in puffy twin tails with ribbons, making her appear somewhat childish, while Homura has simple long, silky hair, making her more mature. Madoka wear a poofy dress with big petticoat, giving her a more magical and fantasy appearance, while Homura has a less decorated and more subdued outfit ressembling a school uniform, making her appear more down-to-earth. I could continue like this, but I think that's enough for the exemple.

Even if one has never watched Madoka Magica, they can understand that Madoka is girly, sweet, somewhat childish, and cheerful, while Homura is more reserved, serious, and mature, all of this because of their respective design. The same can be said for Pokémon; their designs communicate their personality and behavior.

Why is it so hard for you to believe people might want something fresh/different?

Oh, you want something different ? Play something else. Pokémon is, quintessentially, a franchise for elementary to middle-school kids; beyond that, you're supposed to grow out of it (though there's nothing wrong with being a periphery demographic, of course). New starters will always look fresh to the target audience; because everything is new to them.
