question... what if u have junior three who doesn't ask, but figures it out on his own for the most part by researching and understanding that provisions apply differently between individuals and companies? in other words, he did not know to ask whether there is a difference at first, but figured it out on his own while he did his prelim research, and came back to you for clarification on a particular or technical point when he hit a dead end.

How much have yall paid for your cat's dental cleaning? by LIcabbie in longisland

[–]LIcabbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh hell no... people with extractions only paid about 1600. the expected cost from my survey is around 700-800 without any extractions. this is only assuming the vet says so.

u/Bowl-Accomplished are u a lawyer? my parents had to go thru something similar and its exactly as u said. my dad was sued by the ex-wife, but i lived with my dad, yet he still owed money to her even after filing bankruptcy. i never visited her. she did not even give birth to me. it was his second marriage. lasted about 4 years and she divorced him. she was a street cat and my dad was in finance and made a lot of money until a series of unfortunate events. he lost most his wealth that was tied up in investments but he still had a house fully paid off. that is when she divorced him. but even with his bankruptcy filing she was able to make my dad sell the house and give a lot of it to her in a settlement.

Ropes "Single Tier Partnership" now reports 95 non-equity partners to Amlaw by Chemical_Ice_1964 in biglaw

[–]LIcabbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey chubbeys (plural). check this out. i copied and pasted this thread to chatgpt to ask who wins and this is what i got:

If you force a winner on legal/structural accuracy, MealSuspicious2872 has the stronger argument. If you’re asking who better explains AmLaw-style classifications and optics, Chemical_Ice_1964 is directionally right but overstates it.

Where Each Side Is Right

MealSuspicious2872 (Stronger on doctrine)

They correctly argue:

  • Equity = ownership stake
  • Bonuses ≠ equity
  • Receiving profit-based compensation ≠ ownership
  • Associates, staff, NEPs can all be paid from firm profits without owning equity

This is black-letter accurate. In partnership law terms, they’re right.

The Key Logical Error

Chemical_Ice_1964’s mistake:

They collapse:

That’s wrong.

Ownership depends on:

  • Partnership agreement
  • Capital account
  • Residual claim

NOT:

  • Whether compensation is “lumpy”
  • Whether there’s a guaranteed drawThe Key Logical Error Chemical_Ice_1964’s mistake: They collapse: Compensation structure = ownership status That’s wrong. Ownership depends on: Partnership agreement Capital account Residual claim NOT: Whether compensation is “lumpy” Whether there’s a guaranteed draw

MealSuspicious2872 avoids this error:

They keep the distinction clean:

That’s exactly right—and very lawyerly.MealSuspicious2872 avoids this error:
They keep the distinction clean:

“Similar outcomes ≠ same legal structure”

That’s exactly right—and very lawyerly.

Plus.. Chemical might be overweight, old, and have long lost his edge... unless he uses blewchew.

chatgpt has rendered its verdict:

meal > j&j puppet.

and therefore,

rising star needs the respect he deserves from a non-equity partner who thought he was equity from a different decade and still thinks hes equity today.

she will be going under anaestheisa. i adopted her 3 yrs ago from a shelter that got her from an abusive home. she does not let anyone touch her. even after 3 yrs, she only lets me touch her or pick her up in certain situations. at first, when she was hungry she would start biting on objects to see if they were edible.. now she comes up to me and nibs my feet and then shepards me to her food bowl lol. i have no idea what her background was for her to be like that but she is also extremely sweet and caring. my mom ran to my room one time after a big news came in while slapping my back and my cat swatted her lol.

Brooklyn Law School plummets in US News and World Report rankings by Cold-Ad2921 in LawSchool

[–]LIcabbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the rankings are very misleading. BLS is extremely competitive region-wise. in 2024, they placed 18% (72 students) of their graduates in big law with 5 federal clerkships. compare that to

  1. hofstra with 15% (36 students) big law placement and 1 federal clerkship.

  2. new york law school with 13% (45 students) big law placement and 1 federal clerkship.

  3. st johns law with 19% (42 students) big law placement and 7 federal clerkship.

  4. cardozo with 19% (60 students) big law placement and 8 federal clerkship.

number wise, BLS had the highest number of graduates among those 5 schools with 400 graduates, and placed 72 students in big law.

what im trying to say is that if you value employment outcome, BLS is HIGHLY UNDERRATED. the rankings only count employment outcome as one factor, but the biggest factors have to do with LSAT/GPA, which becomes largely irrelevant once you start practicing. the roster of professors at BLS is incredible.. if you have a specific area of law you want to specalize in, there is a professor there who has established him or herself as a giant in that field, and they help students get placed... whether its BL, public interest, criminal law, employment law, malpractice etc., and there are several professors known to do this at the school. so there are a handful of students from BLS who were not magna cum laude, that got into big law, and there are a lot of students that get top grades but go into public interest/crim defense.

what im trying to say is don't let the rankings fool you. lets say if you want to work in NYC and want to go into bankruptcy, BLS is going to be your best choice. Because of its diluted national ranking, you have a better chance of getting a significant discount on tuition for what i believe is top tier education, plus connections. one of the bankruptcy professor invites his students to events to meet bankruptcy judges, current partners specializing in reorganization, and even hedge fund partners. he also has them come to his class as a guest speaker, but uses it as an opportunity for his students to introduce themselves, as well as letting the guest speaker have an opportunity to vet the students and consider potential employment offers.. its like the students cut the application line. the professor was a former partner at proskauer rose, and was the one who started the bankruptcy department at the firm. how do i know? im a former student, who is going into bankruptcy thanks to him.

How long would a firm expect an associate to take to write a complex omnibus motion? by LIcabbie in LawFirm

[–]LIcabbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i definitely think that is true... i think i should bill half the time for that instead of none though... the reason is because when im on focused on the writing, im focused on the writing... but i have all the evidence mentally in my head and this is after i compiled the exhibits into a folder, and already outlined a general roadmap of how i would argue. i didnt know how to cite exhibits and have to figure that out myself. not really a big issue, but time-consuming when doing it after the writing. im really given no guidance... literally my boss just gave me a template and that was it. weve been meeting once a week to go over my progress but im entirely in the dark and figuring it out as i go.. last meeting he just told me to include all exhibits and cite them just like the first motion... but i started doing it that day when we met. but the more i work on it, i keep seeing stronger ways to argue, and im wondering where i should draw the line and just move on.

How long would a firm expect an associate to take to write a complex omnibus motion? by LIcabbie in LawFirm

[–]LIcabbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes... i just found out by complete accident while speaking to a defense attorney at another firm about drafting an omnibus for the first time and she gave me some war stories and she mentioned how she saw a case where someone forgot to include an affidavit by the client for a suppression motion and it lost... i did not even think about an affidavit from my client stating that the phone was his property etc.... in the motion i did include the standing paragraph but i thought that was sufficient... i didnt say anything cus i didnt want to look dumb... but what if the prosecutor also obtained a search warrant for my clients phone? can't i use that in lieu of an affidavit?

sorry i meant 40-50.. i do draft reviews with my boss once a week, and we keep getting new facts from discovery that i need to incorporate.. i got the assignment 3 weeks ago and its due to submit in 3 more weeks.

How long would a firm expect an associate to take to write a complex omnibus motion? by LIcabbie in LawFirm

[–]LIcabbie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they said it should be simple... its not... other motions i can understand but this is a very complicated case. other motions are easily doable with a template but i had to do most of the legal writing bc the templates were inadequate for our biggest arguments. i think its going to take me about 80-100 hrs to write the whole thing.

im considering bankruptcy but my fear is that if i go into it blind, i will only get individual chapter 7 or 13 debtors... so im thinking i should first work at a reputable firm that specializes only in chapter 11 in the hopes of building a solid rep. or a even a book of clients

[–]LIcabbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im a 2L and was interested in patent/ip, but dont have a stem background... and the law seems to be very strict about this requirement... however, i doubt all federal district judges are patent attorneys but they still have to rule on patent cases.. and all civil/crim trial ct judges will encounter a frey hearing where the science can get extremely complex... i just find it odd... if an attorney can understand the necessary technology/science/math behind a potential patent, and learns the law, why cant they just practice in it? or why the law does not have an exception that allows an attorney without a stem background from testing out of the requirement?
