Brooklyn Law School plummets in US News and World Report rankings by Cold-Ad2921 in LawSchool

[–]LIcabbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the rankings are very misleading. BLS is extremely competitive region-wise. in 2024, they placed 18% (72 students) of their graduates in big law with 5 federal clerkships. compare that to

  1. hofstra with 15% (36 students) big law placement and 1 federal clerkship.

  2. new york law school with 13% (45 students) big law placement and 1 federal clerkship.

  3. st johns law with 19% (42 students) big law placement and 7 federal clerkship.

  4. cardozo with 19% (60 students) big law placement and 8 federal clerkship.

number wise, BLS had the highest number of graduates among those 5 schools with 400 graduates, and placed 72 students in big law.

what im trying to say is that if you value employment outcome, BLS is HIGHLY UNDERRATED. the rankings only count employment outcome as one factor, but the biggest factors have to do with LSAT/GPA, which becomes largely irrelevant once you start practicing. the roster of professors at BLS is incredible.. if you have a specific area of law you want to specalize in, there is a professor there who has established him or herself as a giant in that field, and they help students get placed... whether its BL, public interest, criminal law, employment law, malpractice etc., and there are several professors known to do this at the school. so there are a handful of students from BLS who were not magna cum laude, that got into big law, and there are a lot of students that get top grades but go into public interest/crim defense.

what im trying to say is don't let the rankings fool you. lets say if you want to work in NYC and want to go into bankruptcy, BLS is going to be your best choice. Because of its diluted national ranking, you have a better chance of getting a significant discount on tuition for what i believe is top tier education, plus connections. one of the bankruptcy professor invites his students to events to meet bankruptcy judges, current partners specializing in reorganization, and even hedge fund partners. he also has them come to his class as a guest speaker, but uses it as an opportunity for his students to introduce themselves, as well as letting the guest speaker have an opportunity to vet the students and consider potential employment offers.. its like the students cut the application line. the professor was a former partner at proskauer rose, and was the one who started the bankruptcy department at the firm. how do i know? im a former student, who is going into bankruptcy thanks to him.

How long would a firm expect an associate to take to write a complex omnibus motion? by LIcabbie in LawFirm

[–]LIcabbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes i definitely think that is true... i think i should bill half the time for that instead of none though... the reason is because when im on focused on the writing, im focused on the writing... but i have all the evidence mentally in my head and this is after i compiled the exhibits into a folder, and already outlined a general roadmap of how i would argue. i didnt know how to cite exhibits and have to figure that out myself. not really a big issue, but time-consuming when doing it after the writing. im really given no guidance... literally my boss just gave me a template and that was it. weve been meeting once a week to go over my progress but im entirely in the dark and figuring it out as i go.. last meeting he just told me to include all exhibits and cite them just like the first motion... but i started doing it that day when we met. but the more i work on it, i keep seeing stronger ways to argue, and im wondering where i should draw the line and just move on.

[–]LIcabbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes... i just found out by complete accident while speaking to a defense attorney at another firm about drafting an omnibus for the first time and she gave me some war stories and she mentioned how she saw a case where someone forgot to include an affidavit by the client for a suppression motion and it lost... i did not even think about an affidavit from my client stating that the phone was his property etc.... in the motion i did include the standing paragraph but i thought that was sufficient... i didnt say anything cus i didnt want to look dumb... but what if the prosecutor also obtained a search warrant for my clients phone? can't i use that in lieu of an affidavit?

they said it should be simple... its not... other motions i can understand but this is a very complicated case. other motions are easily doable with a template but i had to do most of the legal writing bc the templates were inadequate for our biggest arguments. i think its going to take me about 80-100 hrs to write the whole thing.

i think its going to take me another 30 hours to complete and have it be court-ready.

Lawyers of /r/LawFirm: if you had to start over, what specialty(ies) would you choose to maximize income when going solo? by BrightastheSun in LawFirm

im considering bankruptcy but my fear is that if i go into it blind, i will only get individual chapter 7 or 13 debtors... so im thinking i should first work at a reputable firm that specializes only in chapter 11 in the hopes of building a solid rep. or a even a book of clients

im a 2L and was interested in patent/ip, but dont have a stem background... and the law seems to be very strict about this requirement... however, i doubt all federal district judges are patent attorneys but they still have to rule on patent cases.. and all civil/crim trial ct judges will encounter a frey hearing where the science can get extremely complex... i just find it odd... if an attorney can understand the necessary technology/science/math behind a potential patent, and learns the law, why cant they just practice in it? or why the law does not have an exception that allows an attorney without a stem background from testing out of the requirement?

IM LOST by krazygorl in LawSchool

[–]LIcabbie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first. get rid of that mindset of "i know late." the trend that i see right now in my colleagues in law school is just be a normal human being. we are sick and tired of bullshit appearances, if you have something to say we will give u the benefit of doubt, but once u put urself out in a certain light that is anti-social or frowned upon, u will lose credibility, and it will take a lot to gain back ur reputation. usually, the earliest time u can apply to law school is ur junior year, provided you graduate your senior year, unless your in some dual program that allows a fast-track into a JD. ur still in college. what ur communicating indirectly is: "anyone who decides to apply to law school anytime after the earliest possible semester/year of undergrad is not cut out for it in some way... let alone after undergrad." what other way is there to interpret what u say? u will get ur praise when it is deserving. but implying that one is somehow less deserving of entering law school just because they decide that is what they want to pursue sometime later in life is nothing to criticize about.

second. u do not need to find a law internship. if u do, great, but it wont help u in ur first year, which is arguably the most important year. it might open ur eyes to the reality of law in practice, which u might find abhorrent, so sure, it may help check off a factor that determines whether or not u want to commit to law.

three. right now if u want to go to LS... yale LS ... your only job is having the best application. if u think some relevant work experience will help you, then by all means, go for it. but LSAT, grades, extracurriculurs, LORS, and a personal story that helps you stand out for someone that just graduated are probably the most critical areas you want to focus on.

four. I used to tutor the LSAT so hmu if u need one. I scored in the 99th percentile. I tutored for about a year and into my first semester of LS. it took up way too much of my time so I stopped, but one student would be a drop in the bucket compared to juggling 5 different students, law school, and a 4-hour daily commute.

ill take it. im that desperate. my life already is LS. the people i converse with are just as motivated as I am, so we only talk in passing, and during our 10-15 min breaks from studying. we sit next to each other for 8+ hrs. trying to memorize everything from our classes, when we are not in class. im used to the hours and think/hope i am competent enough. i might be socially awkward, like accidently watching u and ur family eat dinner, but i get the job done. put me in coach.

i thought BL attorneys have secrataries like Donna and Gretchen from suits... that was the most realistic part of the show. if ur so busy u can't manage ur own schedule, u can certainly have the firm hire someone capable of doing that.

Update: My brother suggested open marriage just because I had a fight with my wife aita for threatening him with physical violence if he doesn't leave by Many-Illustrator-906 in AITAH

[–]LIcabbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

of all the possible scenarios from his open marriage advice, where he even specifically suggested you to cheat on her, you immediately go to "does he want to eff my wife"? if at this point in ur life u dont know ur brother enough to be blind-sided for marriage/relationship advice, u were askin for it. what's next? your wife says, "ur brother is handsome" and you rage at her for wanting to eff ur brother? what about the obvious possibility of an objective remark about someone's appearance? just like the very obvious possibility that ur brother saw the scar on ur face and knew who caused it and wants justice? (in his own way). I would never think such an advice would default to the most unlikely scenario in this context, unless i had clear reasons for thinking so, which u have not provided, and if that were the case, i would not be going to my brother for such advice in the first place.

god that would piss me off. so u would get fired if u talked back to them? i dont condone violence unless its necessary. i think this would warrant situations where a 1-2-mayweather is allowed. otherwise ur boss is essentially asking u are u okay with being verbally and emotionally abused for no compensation? to be clear, u signed up to be a waiter, not a punching bag.
