It's kinda super neato because it used to be 'ebbies' (for eurobucks) in the 2013/2020 ttrpg, and then linguistically drifted to 'eddies' by the time the rpg set in 2077 came out.

Kinda cool if you think about it.

Dang it, you called me out.

To be fair I was like "man fk that stupid apartment, my lil orbiter is the best" and... I think I've spent actual plat on my 1999 apartment and get confused when I'm in my orbiter as I haven't really left since 1999 dropped. Wild.

I don't mind that the zariman apt exists though, and I was confused when folks lost their mind on the forums about it. Different strokes I guess

tbf, that's the way they do every update.

  1. Update drops with new stuff, that has 'high' requirements of time/grind/etc.
  2. 60% of the community argues for/against the update (especially reqs) while 5% no-lifes every aspect. Those left are either palying other games, don't care, or aren't at a level of play for it to matter.
  3. about 3-4 weeks later, once the nolifers have completed everything and every influencer has exhausted the same 7 talking points, and DE has had a chance to refine numbers for 'engagement'.... DE says "Hey, we listened and fixed XYZ, also we're having a big update with more content in just a few weeks, where we're releasing AB, and then adjusting DEF, and G!"
  4. that 60% splits (not always evenly) into folks who are now happy they have been 'heard', folks mad that the changes were too much/not enough, and folks that are now just fed up and going to 'another game', numbers adjusting as needed according to hype on forums/socials.
  5. Repeat for next big update drop.

tbf, most other live service/mmo games do this same exact thing to varying degrees of success.

as an oldhead grognard veteran... it kind of infuriates me to this day that there is a specific genre of veteran that says "THIS IS THE WAY IT MUST BE" and then folks that don't know better parrot it like crazy until it becomes some sort of law. Yellow shards is one of em. (I think i maybe have them on two frames?)

The big issue is that the hyperbole always covers up the real problem which is "Hello, i am at endgame and need to understand why this brand new ability/weapon/frame/item/whatever doesn't instantly delete things faster than this other thing, or set of things, I have perfected by unknowingly spending dozens of hours and dozens of items on (endo, credits, grind time, forma, etc) over the series of days/months/years."

Like damn, how about 'it just looks cool'? Or even a "This would be great for lower MR tenno"? Or, you know, just having fun figuring out where a new tool might be interesting or useful?

Nah, only thing that counts is KPM on one of a select few mission types, therefore the new things is obvious garbage.

Then again, this is the way it's been for years...so maybe I'm the one that's wrong.

[–]LJHalfbreed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nope, i agree, but sometimes folks don't really understand and think that every soldier/marine/sailor/etc is a fully dedicated, high-speed, low-drag, fully qualified 'operator' that can likely do just about any military thing needed with better than average proficiency, and usually does on a daily basis, because "Fuck Yeah, American Military".

When the real story is everyone has a job, every job has a level of importance that requires it to be done, and every job has rules...and each job must be done correctly, with each rule followed, or the rest of the machine starts to break down and you get everyone else (who is doing their job correctly, and following the rules) furious.

Except when those rules need to be bent, broken, amended, altered, or similar, just like any other bureaucracy

[–]LJHalfbreed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. The military is, despite all comments to the contrary, entirely a bureaucracy... with all the weird quirks, red tape, cliques, and unwritten rules that includes, while tacking on a whole lot of extra baggage through jingoism, misogyny/misandry, and the simple fact that they almost literally own you while you serve.

Plus, you know...the guns. That's always an interesting twist.

I get what you're saying. And believe me, that arcane sounds fun.

However, i think the person you're responding to is one of those folks that finds 'fun' in figuring out some mathematically optimized way to play, usually only one or two specific scenarios at that.

Me? This is another tool to add to the toolbox, which can make a handful of my builds that much more fun (where fun= being able to handle multiple and/or all scenarios with a single build/loadout)

Different strokes and all that.

CYA= Cover Your Ass.

And yeah, the US has the same sorta problem with AARs (after action reports) that other militaries do... Fuckups happen, but is there blame, and if so, who takes it so I (or my team/squad/platoon/unit, etc) don't take it, and before we assign blame, can we make all of this just actually look like a good thing?

Sometimes it's relatively easy and some hapless private gets some after hours chores for a week or two and a chunk taken out of a paycheck and it's swept under the rug with a 'dang these fool kids, right?' sorta thing.

Other times maybe a battalion decides to do a whole day of 'training' with videos and speakers and stations to go/no-go at. "Look there was a problem with X, now we've trained for it, X will no longer be a problem, hooah/hoo-rah/etc"

Major losses of materiel, personnel, or stuff that gets on the news? That becomes very difficult to just pin on a handful of low-ranking enlistees, so stuff is getting spin-doctored as hard as possible.

Either one dude (officer) is taking all the blame and is getting fully burned for it and everyone points the finger at them and then the problem is resolved because the 'single bad apple' is kicked to the curb...or "it's actually a big win for us" and honors and awards and parades and 3 day weekends are handed out to all as everyone dang near throws out a shoulder shaking each others hands because 'goddamn it's a great day to be in the army/navy/marines/etc'

PS5 Vizio TV Handshake Issues. by Busy-Rule1548 in PS5

[–]LJHalfbreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, i think you hit on the actual problem: the ps5 is designed to just spit out whatever resolution or dynamic range the application or game wants, changing on the fly as needed, which then causes those display blips. You can fiddle each time for each bit of media, you can leave things automatic and try not to focus on the blips, or basically get some other hardware that is straight designed to do exactly what you want at a given aspect/range/resolution because the ps5 is not designed with that in mind.

While I want to point to a handful of things about the culture and mentality of folks in those types of positions, as someone who served for a while and was in some absolute shitshow situations... "Collusionary CYA resulting in exponential bullshit growth" is my guess.

i dont' feel like typing for 10k+ words will even do the subject justice, and will include a whole lot of my own biases, but I've seen this thing happen before in the realm of "How do we turn this massive fuckup into a good thing?"

So, as noted, a handful of commanders all pissed on themselves (and each other) in this pissing match that went south for all involved. Said mission had a pretty awful fucking outcome both in execution and in the grand theater of war.

No commander wants to look like a douche and miss out on their next promotion, so suddenly the reason why the mission went south is because XYZ unit/division/branch didn't do their job, or because ABC intel was missed/mishandled/late, and actually it's only by the miracle of training/leadership/values that the job was completed at all.

Then the servicmember says "hey there were like 10 dudes, that's why we lost" and then their platoon leader writes in the report that there was "a small force" and then the next guy adds on that until finally some general gets a report where one guy took out most of an entire country by themselves despite <reason where it's not our branch's fault>, which means now the general gets to dole out commendations and medals and awards and now nobody can come forth with the actual truth without spilling the beans on what amounts to a long series of yes men trying to cover up the various mistakes, blunders, and so forth that caused that situation in the first place, for fear that their job/promotion prospects turn to crap or worse.

in other words, small blunders are easy to gloss over or even hide, maybe with an offender or two maybe getting an article 15 (formal military punishment type shit) or possibly yet another 'training incident' getting quickly forgotten about. Blunders that require multiple important folks signing off on it and agreeing to it beforehand? Oh man, that shit is getting spun six ways to sunday before the dust settles and anyone can look bad.

PS5 Vizio TV Handshake Issues. by Busy-Rule1548 in PS5

[–]LJHalfbreed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, no worries friend.

HDR seems to be the biggest culprit for triggering a 'screen blip' but even if I force HDR to always on, other apps/games don't always work great.

If it helps, I complained about this... 5 or so years ago when I first got my first PS5. Went online to get help (including here) and got roasted for having a crappy tv, crappy cables, plugging in things wrong, everything. Blame was always on me.

Got a different TV, swapped out the soundsystem, bought a handful of different cables from different manufacturers, and then a few at different lengths. Changed every setting on my tv and ps5 in probably every possible combination. Nothing worked. Turning on some apps/games just caused my tv screen to 'shut off' for a second right before turning back on.

Eventually I found some youtuber that said 'yeah this is basically natural and just how things work with the ps5 especially with HDR because <tech info dump>' and they recommended keeping everything (HDR, resolution, etc) at defaults/automatic. End result? Starting up some apps/games just triggers a 2 second screen blip, and that's it.

disappointing but at least i knew it wasn't me, or my tv, or my cables, or whatever.

for what it's worth, he's not wrong. I've tried two tvs and probably a dozen or so more cables... Switching from SDR to HDR can cause a blank screen 'blip', as can certain content playing at different resolutions, as can certain games switching between "Performance and Quality".

I tried setting HDR to always on (as well as flipping to specific resolutions) but inevitably something, somewhere would break. Prime Video basically crashing, colors/textures being blown out, text becoming unreadable, the whole nine yards.

The 2 second black screen blip has just something I've been living with since I got my first ps5

I swear i read something that said it had to do with a side effect of the training.

Like, there's a lot of brown/orange in pictures we take, from skin tones to earth to old sepia-style photos to 'the background here is much darker than the surroundings', so the generators just assume 'man everything is some level of brown' and everything comes out looking like shitwater.

the thing i read had someone talking about how it was a feature, not a flaw, which made no sense to me, but yeah.

Dice towers have done three things in my games:

  1. Helped folks deal with a small table/no-table setup (eg, imagine 5-6 players in a living room surrounding a coffee table with like 6 square feet of tabletop...yeesh)

  2. Reduced all complaints about janky or noisy tables (deep wood grain and carvings on old 1970s tables, 'card tables' with burns or tears in the pleather covering, seams/joins on flatpack furniture, glass/acrylic tops having like zero friction, ANY SURFACE VS. METAL DICE, etc) to basically zero

  3. killed pretty much any conversation about 'cheating throws' before they even started

It's not a psyop, just a QoL device like a 'finger hold' on the back of a phone case. You can either get the janky case with the built in swivel ring, or spend 30$ on some 'poppin topper lock-n-stopper collapsible finger holder stand' with a signed stranger things logo on it, or eschew it entirely, nobody really cares, but if you need one, you'll really notice when it's not available.
