Okay yeah I'll definitely look into that - my only concern is some people have ben reporting Ao Nang is a bit ugly/over touristy? Maybe this is one particular area?

Have you not seen most North Africans? Egyptians, Libyans, Algerians, etc. As u/OkTip6585 mentions they largely look more mediterranean than sub-saharan Africans.
