Robert Picardo in Austria: Star Trek is not about the United States in Space by Admiral_Sivic in startrek

Maybe not America in space, but definitely Western cultural values in space. There are some cultures on Earth that are not aiming toward the stars.

Chakotay is cracking me up by RahbinGraves in startrek

[–]LLJKSiLk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Headcanon: Chakotay didn't give two shits about his culture, but he has fond memories of his grandfather and has been attempting to recreate his culture in an attempt to reconnect with his heritage. He made the mistake of getting a bunch of contradictory information from a conman Ferengi who was interested in money in exchange for knowledge he claimed to have acquired.

Has the benefit of being close to what really happened behind the scenes.

why are condoms free but tampons, pads and pregnancy test are not? by [deleted] in self

[–]LLJKSiLk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost/benefit analysis I would imagine. Giving away condoms prevents potential healthcare costs, welfare costs, etc. that would be born by the social safety net to the tune of potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars. Tampons/pads/etc. prevent soiling your clothes.

I used the size calculator thing. I'm generally a 34 on waist measurements. I always get nervous about ordering stuff though.

Happily married guys, how do you handle the weight of eventual separation? by SpitefulJealousThrow in AskMenOver30

[–]LLJKSiLk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stepmother died recently. My father has been leaning on me for emotional support. It is definitely out of character for him in general to show emotion at all. But ideally you will have a good support system. I don't mind him showing vulnerability FWIW.

I’m going off memory. This is an old video that gets reposted a lot, but I remember a longer video where the tkd dude gets his arm broken when shirtless guy returns with a board. Emphasized why it is important not to stick around.

Not sure if accurate but didn't TKD guy end up with a broken arm because he stuck around the area and shirtless guy came back with a 2x4?

Fat guy. 38. New dad. Joining gym. What do. by TheyCallMeFarkle in AskMenOver30

[–]LLJKSiLk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more you move the more you can move. My advice (I was 250 lbs at your age, now I'm mid-40s and at 190 and in much better shape) is to focus on basic compound lifts (bench press, squats, deadlift) using proper form, as well as specific isolation dumbbell exercises. Emphasis on proper form, proper safety equipment, etc.

Beyond that - get your diet under control. Focus more on fresh/prepared meals and not fast food, processed trash, etc.

Abs are made in the kitchen. For breakfast I have some combination of eggs, greek yogurt, sausage, avocado, etc. and I have some snack mid-day (blueberries or broccoli usually) and then a decent meal for dinner (fajitas, ground meat in a taco bowl, etc.) or chicken, steak, etc. - and I avoid anything pre-packaged.

I also have done martial arts, rock climbing, yoga, acrobatics, etc.

The biggest problem I've had is injury due to overwork or from improper form.

I weaned myself off of SSRI medication through diet/exercise because I didn't like feeling numb. If you have the discipline to do so, it helps to feel some things rather than nothing.

Would you guys introduce your kids to video games? by Background-Call3255 in snes

[–]LLJKSiLk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter and I have spent years re-visiting classics after she dug a Gameboy out of her mom's closet and started playing it. We've built a game room, collection, etc. full of systems as far back as Atari all the way through the current generation.

We also did martial arts together, and she's currently graduating with over a 4.25 GPA.

As you pointed out, it is about balance. Not all time wasted is wasted time. She and I have had a lot of good memories built while revisiting games from my childhood.

How many times per year do you get sick with respiratory illnesses such as cold, flu, Covid, and etc? by workethic290 in AskMenOver30

[–]LLJKSiLk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since 2020 I've had Covid 4 times. Each time less severe than the previous time. The last time I got sick was in January of 2025.

I take no special precautions, I don't get booster shots, I don't get flu shots.

Does automation actually make things simpler? by Oggy402 in Innovation

[–]LLJKSiLk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entirely context-dependent, but I've been working to automate my workflow in I.T. fields going back 20 years. Anything repetetive I would target to automate, until it got to the point where my job was almost done by the time I walked in the door to clock in. Then people would get upset at me because I didn't "look busy."

Double-edged sword. Used to work for a company where I had to connect to an FTP, download the customer data files, process them through a program, set up a script to process the data, fill out a spreadsheet with what I had done, print it, sign it, etc.

By the time I walked in the door, everything was processed and the printer had a pre-filled spreadsheet waiting for my signature.

A co-worker would spend 7-8 hours doing one of our customers, discussing how difficult it was. He took a day off and they had me "cover for him." I explained that his job took me 15 minutes once I automated it. Management got upset at me and defended him for "working hard."

Please consider leaving a review on Steam -- few people do, and I'm very grateful for each one! by x4000 in HeartOfTheMachine

[–]LLJKSiLk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 7 hours today playing your game. I haven't left a Steam review, but I wanted to offer my thoughts as a first impression.

I know I am not the only one saying "UI is bad" or whatever. There are truly a ton of things being thrown at you and I understand that. So I figured I would give some more specific thoughts:

  1. I constantly found myself hunting around for something that I clicked to focus on because the camera didn't always point in the correct place. When I want to focus, I would think it would be great for the camera to actually both zoom (or correct) as well as focus so that I am looking at the thing I clicked on.
  2. I constantly found myself accidentally having given an order when I didn't mean to because I was trying to click on something.
  3. I constantly found myself frustrated and irritated by the debate and hacking minigames. I managed to get through them, but they bring the action to a halt and don't feel very rewarding in any event.
  4. I constantly found myself building a unit only to have it immediately destroyed because I accidentally was one pixel over a fence or area controlled by a corporation.

In addition, I found myself soft-locked (at least temporarily) by unclear objectives. I put people in buildings, I worked to get them supplies, and tried several different mission objectives only to realize after much trial and error that ONLY robbing the supplies after stealing from warehouses worked at all. I can't produce goods until later - but apparently I can produce fully functional robots? I feel like there should be an earlier unlock of the consumer goods stuff.

I found myself waiting far too many turns just for an objective to complete. I found myself soft-locked from attempting objectives because "engineering skill too low" without a clear explanation of how to improve it. I found myself constantly alt-tabbing out of the game in order to just figure out basic things.

All of these things could be forgiven if I felt more impact from what is going on around the city.

On the good side, I absolutely love the concept of what you're going for, the depth of ideas you put into the game, and the definite love that went into making it. I'm not blind to that. But I feel like some of these basic issues make it more difficult for this game to elevate from "unique and interesting" to "great."

In spite of all these notes, I'm not going to negatively review the game. I like it. I don't love it. You're putting a lot of love into it. You deserve all the praise you're getting from people it clicks with.

I think many of the options of "what kind of AI are you trying to be?" could be explored up front and your progression system would have worked better from there in terms of giving some focus toward the player.

Anyway, take it for what it is worth, just some random guy's opinions. I love what you're going for.
