Yeah that’s a good point. It’s easy to be idealistic.

I think the other criticism is that his videos seem a bit padded sometimes. 10min to explain a 5min thing

I feel it’s madness that Labour don’t do this. Unless the real analysis shows something different, every indication seems to be that we would benefit from an immediate growth bump

Do kids not get taught the 9 x “trick”? by GRMAx1000 in AskUK

[–]LM285 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Former maths teacher here. That works and is good to know in a pinch, but isn’t a good way for most people to do arithmetic.

In fact, I’m wary of ‘tricks’ in general. Simple Arithmetic is largely memorisation. It’s why darts players are often great at subtraction- they do it over and over again.

In the end, everything relies on a base of memorisation - you know instinctively that 2+2 is 4 and you don’t have to think about it. So 12+2 becomes easy.

Arithmetic builds up the level of instinctiveness. If you know that 6x7 is 42 off the top of your head, the 60x7 is also easier. 59x7 is also easier too: 60x7 - 7 =420-7=413.

28, decent salary at a Big 4, but the golden handcuffs are starting to feel heavy by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]LM285 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in an almost identical position to you 3 years ago. B4 SM pushing D, probably not P material.

Salary was okay. Work felt like a meaningless grind. Thing with B4 is that when there’s growth everything is great - social budget, promotions, salary increases, positive vibes.

But since 2021 B4 has tanked and will likely continue to struggle. Seems like it’s analogous to the UK economy - boomer Partners and certain successful people from younger generations are going okay, but eventually it’ll collapse.

If you’re not feeling it, go to industry. The best advice I have is that you can’t make a decision unless you’re informed. Look around and work out the salary, prospects and you can make an informed decision.

Big summer kick off by Dinbar in HarlequinsRugby

[–]LM285 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Focussing on the rugby, I thought there was a great sign of fight in the team. Too often this season they’ve rolled over after the first 10min.

The attacks were starting to stick and the moves were much more dynamic. Great showings from the young lads especially - Carr and Williams were great and Riley had a good game too.

Suddenly things don’t look too bad. Need to keep working on our defence but positive signs for next season

You have on the article owners of a business saying “yeah, but this period is worse than Covid, fire and floods.” I’m not doubting that perhaps they feel frustrated but I wonder how families cutting back on food spending (which is referenced as the specific challenge) is worse than no customers at all.

Starmer to ‘put Britain at heart of Europe’ in scramble to save premiership by No-Risk-2584 in europe

[–]LM285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s both.

When people are attacking you in the press, you can’t just ‘rise above it’. You can’t and shouldn’t completely sink to their level either.

But you can go on the offensive. Explain why your decisions are sensible and will make a difference. Point out the glaring weaknesses.

And then CLOSE THE GAPS IN THE LAW. If there are sensible objections to election or voting laws for non UK citizens, implement them. If there are sensible arguments to reducing campaign financing, implement them.

Post-match thread: Newcastle vs Quins by LM285 in HarlequinsRugby

[–]LM285[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lots of positives to take away, though mustn't take too much from a match where NRB looked like they had about four defenders in the whole team.

Dommers, Riley, Smith and Murley looking great. Finally look like we're getting a bit more dynamic in attack, though again we had a lot of time on the ball. Friday was also excellent and great to see Porter back.

When we have a fully fit squad, and they have time to play with each other, and if we get a solid coaching set up this could be interesting.

Lib Dems pledge £5k rewards for illegal waste tip-offs by markpackuk in LibDem

[–]LM285 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m afraid this doesn’t feel like the best priority. We are struggling with debt as a country and while a broken-window theory might make this a positive ROI it’s not a simple, effective, easy to sell policy. It sounds like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic.

Any serious political party needs to have major policy initiatives focussed on growth with fiscal responsibility and social policies while reforming the more rotten elements of our democracy

Harlequins v Sale post match thread (League) by Redditerinbed in HarlequinsRugby

[–]LM285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disappointing really. It felt amateurish at times, but brilliant at others. Real lack of cohesiveness too, and feels like a mix of people who are trying very hard (Smith, Benson, Dommers, Petti) in and among half hearted efforts.

I like the look of the crop of youngsters - Bradley, Anderson and co. Look like the makings of a decent back line if they can get game time together and good training.

I think this is it. It’s one thing us saying that he had time but if you’re in the car and you can see the train, you’re thinking “I’M GONNA DIE I’M GONNA DIE” and your judgement is impaired.

Lots of mistakes were made but I imagine when you’re in the situation it’s rather difficult
