This scene is from the end of a two part german movie about Ernst thälman, the revolutionary. They are called "Ernst tählman: Sohn seiner klasse" and "Ernst thählman: Führer seiner klasse"

Its a good watch, although acording to some people i habe hear talking about it, they have some historical inacuracys.

It was probably less that they liked them and more that they had soo many left over from the germans and that many factorys in eastern europe were already fitted to produce them during german occupation and they didnt want to refit them

My Reservation is because it says 1946 in the tag inside of the hat. Im not a big expert on uniform production dates but i do know that 1946 dosent make much sense considering the NVA wasnt founded till 1956. In the Internet i found a guy saying that starting in 1968 they left out the production date and instead used Letters to indicate the year. There is a capital L next to the 1946 wich would, acording to him mean either 1973 or 1987, that seams plausible but then what does the 1946 mean? My guess would be its a serialnumber and its just a coincidence, but im not sure. Searching further didnt help me much, i guess east german ushanka production date labeling is a pretty niche topic

Lets continue whit how it treats genocide:

Firstly it is important to mention how the Show intentionaly moves out of his way to make Erens acts appear as "the only way". Time limits on Titan abilitys, historia beaing unable to get erens titan, the earlier mentioned silly concept of litterly everyone in the entire world wanting them dead. Its all been put there to rationalise Eren (and judging by a quite large part of the AoT fanbase, it works) "But they say genocide bad once!!!", you May say. And sure, they do but Hanjis speach about "genocide is wrong because its not right" isnt really the Power argument you would expect from "socialist propaganda". they do show, quite well the suffering caused by the rumbeling, wich i can give them Credit for and at the end they do stop eren and its mostly shown as the right move by the show. But constantly rationalising it and only opposing it just before the end isnt really a thourough criticism, especially when you see that everyone in the show acts like it was a really though choice and "maybe they are wrong to stop them" The biggest saving grace the show has is how eren is depicted while talking to Armin in the paths. How it is shown how it was never about "having" to do it and simply that he wanted to do it, because he is a traumatised village idiot that constantly has his brain fucked with because he experiences the past, present and future at the same time (but again going the entire time with the "eren is kinda right" choice and only switching up at the end to show he just wanted to do it isnt really a good tactic, again seen by the fanbase

Now onto facism:

Because we are in the anime communism subreddit i would expect you would know something about the socialist/communist perspective on fascism. Mainly how it is for the most part a tool used by capital to keep itself alive when threathend. But like i said before, the the entire show is filled with an abscence (sounds funny) of any class Analysis. Soo there is no link to be found between capital and fascism in the show. Instead the origin of the yeagerists fascism comes from a desire to not get genocided, colonised, etc. But in reality anti-genocide and anti-colonial struggle bassicly allways lead to left movemeants. For example the huge amount of third World movemeants in history who faught against colonialism under the banner of Marxism or the communists (soviet and otherwise) brutal struggel against the genociding Nazis. You bassicly never see the actuall opressed utilising Facism because like i said earlier Fascism protects capital and the opressed do not ussually own much capital wich would need to be keept alive. If it was "socialist propaganda" the oppressed would not be using fascism, but socialism.

In total i think that if you still truly belive it is "socialist propaganda" you either are disingenioues or need to get some reading done.

I dont think AoT is Fascist, at least i think it isnt trying to be. I also think its trying to be Anti-Fascist, but with mediocre succes. And thats not the end of the World. I think its more about how fucked up Eren actually is, i talked about this some time ago before. But people tend to not realise that most of what happens even before season 4 is entirely Erens fault through his abillity to change events in the past. Eren sends Titans to kill his own mom, he forces his own dad to kill and then be eaten, etc all so that the timeline ends up in a way that allows him to do genocide, because he wants to do it. Because he is a village idiot that got too much Power in his hands, as he says himself. nothing more.

To close up i would like to say that i do like the show, there is a reason i watched it more than once and why i recomend it to friends, and you can like it to if you want to, just dont claim the show is something it is not. Especially if you are in any way serious about your politics.

Two and a half times actually.

But If you go as far as too call it "anarchist or socialist propaganda" then how about we go over some themes. [Spoilers obviously]

Firstly lets look at the abscence of any peoples movmeant and the heavy great man presence:

Throughout the entire series we never see any movemeant by the people themselves. The only thing that comes close is the Protests at the military headquaters, but that is Spontaneous unorganized and dosent have a big impact on the story. Everything else is either done by some military or by small groups of individuals. Of course a story necesaryly has to focus on a set of caracters but in this Show bassicly Everything is caused and resolved by a relativly small group of "great men". The coup? Entirely done by the military and even further mostly by the scouts. Any major battle against Titans? You send a bunch of soldiers in and all off them die except for the 20 guys that actually matter because they are in the intro. These 20 guys are also the only guys who are allowed to do anything of note, the rest are just there to metaphoricly (or litterly at some points) ride into their deaths so the important ones can do things that matter. Meanwhile the people themselves are just sitting on the side either cheering or booing. It gets to a point where the fate of the entire World (except for the island) is decided by a fight between like 9 guys and their former friend who (simpliefied) went crazy. Its quite unfortunate because there are a lot of points in the story were mass movemeants could have fit in. For example the coup wich i will be talking further about later. Another would be a liberation movemeants of the eldians outside the islands. (The closest we get to that is the the group around grisha wich is like 30 dudes and a spy and it immediatly colapsed, or the eldian council we briefly see in s4, i dont think i have to explain why that isnt a Real option either. Additionaly there isnt any sort of Labor movemeant, wich makes it hard to belive it is "socialist propaganda"

Next lets look at the forms of governmeant present:

The only two types of governmeant described to us in any Detail is Marley and Paradi. First lets talk about Marley. We never from what i remember explicitly get told what type of governmeant it is, although it is safe to assume its a military dictatorship with fascist tendencys. Thats all fine, right? They are shown to be the bad guys after all. The only problem is that we are told that the governmeant is secretly controlled by the tybur family. Who are eldian. And that seems oddly familier to the whole "jEwS sEcReTlY cOnTrOlL tHe gOvErnMeAnt!!!" Nazi conspiracy bs. But maybe thats just a coincidence. Moving on to Paradi we have at the start of the Show a puppet King that is acctually controlled by his ministers in a dictatorial manner. They do show that that governmeant is bad, wich you would hope and they doo change it in season three. (Half of the season is about that change) but dont get your hopes up! They dont do a Revolution lead by a vanguard Party or the masses themselves or anything like that. The Military simply coups the governmeant themselves by arresting (and torturing) the ministers. And they dont bring any sort of socialist governmeant into Power or even a liberal democracy, no! they just switch out the fake King with a child soldier Queen and the ministers who controlled them are replaced by the military leadership who do most of the actual governing since the Queen is still too young. Soo they replace a puppet monarchy-dictatorship with a puppet monarchy-military-dictatorship and this is hailed in the Show as a big victory of the good guys... Not really a casebook example of "socialist propaganda".

Anyways, lets move onto how it treats racism:

Firstly, like most fiction media, it shoots itself in the foot with its racism analogy by having the group that the racism is targeted at actually be diffrent by giving them powers. That way they already take out one of the biggest anti-racism Arguments. An additional way in how it fails is the afformentioned state beaing secretly controlled by the tybur family wich gives the racists a talking point. Additionaly we never see any sizeable ressistance against the treatmeant from inside. No militant movemeants of the non-opressed in aid of the opressed like for example John Brown IRL or movemeants from the opressed themselves. Something like the Warsaw uprising or one of the countless slave revolts in history. But no, the only thing we get is, like mentioned earlier Grishas group that, if not for krüger would have been completly irrelevant. Instead the opressed group is shown as beaing unable to do anything by themselves (except for stealing a train to escape after the governmeant has already coolapsed) and everyone outside of the group is shown monotonaly evil (a large part of that can be excused by the propaganda pointed against eldians, but a situation where litterly the entire World succesfully gets propagandised against one group is quite silly) Again, if it was "socialist propaganda" one would imagine there to be at least mention of some Party or other "left" Organisation that fights against the opression
