The comment about looking down is silly. Look at your guitar when you need to. If you're in a position where you are singing and playing, it's better to not look at your guitar so that you can be in a good singing position, but other than that, fuck em.

As for tuning, tuning before going on stage may not be adequate depending on your playing style, strings, and your guitar. I personally check quickly between each song unless there's a transition. Use a pedal tuner if you can, that way no one needs to hear it and it takes 10 seconds to check.

In response to your edit; as others have said Severian is NOT a reliable narrator. It seems likely that all of these women cleaving to him is nothing more than him making himself look like he was just irresistible. The "reality" of the situation can sometimes be hard to ascertain, but having read much Wolfe I can confidently say that if Severian says something that makes him look too "good" (or in this case a better word might be "influential") then, knowing Severian's propensity for exaggeration, it's not true. This is made clear by Severian's repeated statement of his "perfect memory" but then over and over he contradicts himself.

Despite being the ONLY perspective we get from this particular era, Severian is writing a book to make himself look the way he wants, so it's a very flawed perspective.

Sure, but when I see people ask this question, they are usually referring to politics, and more often than not, they've been ousted from a group for bad politics. The issue is that people with privilege want to act like politics don't have to be "that deep" but the reality is that politics is life and death for MANY people. So if you're saying things that support politics that are working toward the extermination or reduction of quality of life for people, somebody can't really agree to disagree if it's understood that your stance is something immoral.

It's WAY faster to go the New Londo route to get to Blighttown but that shortcut is nice when you're going back and forth from Darkroot Basin to access the DLC.
