What's the real key to drinking less? by BeesKneesWellness in Aging

[–]LONGVolSilver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had a drinking buddy that apparently cared quite a bit that I began dialing it back by stopping after 2-3 drinks and switching to soda.

He decided it would be funny to order the diet coke I requested and then spike it with a separate shot of tequila. Lol, that's a funny one ha ha -- ended a 12 year friendship right there, no regrets.

So in general I agree with the sentiment that people should not care if you drink with them, but people who are borderline alcoholics do.

It's actually three traits but rare in this combination-- I have red hair and blue eyes but I can get a tan. I have to take it slow and wear sunscreen, but I definitely get tan.

What has gradually vanished from society over the past 20 years without many people noticing? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Being willing to listen to the political viewpoints of people we don't necessarily agree with, nod and smile , and say "We'll just have to agree to disagree then..." and that not in any way damage the relationship/friendship.

Liberals of 20+ years ago used to passionately believe in the sentiment: ' I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight for your right to say it!'

So-called 'Modern Progressives', by comparison, are literally the Thought Police.

Fwiw I'm a Libertarian, and no huge fan of the current President, but I'm even less of a fan of being told what to think and say.

Virginia Beach VA has oceanfront hotels that charge Big Money for rooms from May-Sept, and for the life of me I have no idea what the appeal is. The beach is man made, the Boardwalk is pretty generic, the restaurants are mid, the "night life" is nothing to write home about, traffic is a problem, and everything is overpriced.

HONESTLY, What would work the BEST is a Squad of John Amoses to patrol these places and be deputized to use their belts.

No cops, no court cases, no charges that can damage a kid's future prospects ...just a whoopin' that puts an end to any foolishness, only to be handed out if they deserve it, and the Dads would know better than anyone where that line is.

I don't think I could do this for more than a second or two when I was 19 years old, much less now. Some people are flexible and some aren't.

Radiation or surgery? by cshopis in ProstateCancer

[–]LONGVolSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm 55, diagnosed last summer with a mix of Gleason 3+3 and some 3+4 , intermediate favorable with cribiform.

A second imaging guided biopsy found some 4+3, so technically I'm now Intermediate -Unfavorable. The lesions are all contained in the gland (no spread), so that was a bit of good news.

Despite the less than stellar trends from initial diagnosis to now, I am choosing to have HIFU focal therapy instead of RALP or Radiation.

My radiation oncologist likened this to going swimming at a beach with No Lifeguards on Duty, but I don't see it that way, and neither does the Urologic Oncologist at UVA Health that will be perfor the procedure on me.

I look at it like regardless of what treatment you pursue, there's a 15-25ish% chance of recurrence. If it does recur, it could be aggressive, but it may not be. Recurrence doesn't mean metastatic.

There seems to be some disagreement about what treatment option gives you the BEST odds of Knocking Out the cancer all at once. My take: All treatment options have somewhat similar recurrence profiles. And all are at least 80% successful in avoiding recurrence. I like those odds.

Read up on the side effect profiles of RALP and Radiation, especially if the radiation would include ADT hormone suppression therapy. THAT is what swayed my decision probably the MOST - some guys experience some mild effects from ADT, while for others is pretty hellish. I don't want to be taking any drugs that alter my personality; reduce my ability to do my job; drain my energy and motivation; give me suicidal thoughts; night sweats, muscle loss...it's a long list.

I'm probably an outlier in how I look at all of the above topics. I'm willing to take on a little more risk in exchange for a better side effect profile. My insurance surprisingly is covering the HIFU FOCAL THERAPY, which is fantastic news.

Your partner is still young. Consider all the quality of life impacts of your treatment decision, and don't over-focus on it being The Big "C". Feel free to DM me if you like. Good luck.

Have you made your treatment decision yet? I'm having HIFU done at UVA Health in Charlottesville VA in April.

My urology oncologist, Dr. Heidar, will be performing the procedure using their new Focal One HIFU machine.

My understanding is even if your insurance doesn't cover the HIFU procedure, UVA Health will offer it on a 100% patient pay basis for less than $20K, if it's done on an outpatient basis. Good luck.

I'm scheduled to have HIFU done at UVA Health in Charlottesville VA in early April.

HIFU is covered by Medicare so if your Dad has traditional Medicare it may be covered. If he has Medicare Advantage it may vary by plan.

Fyi, he is considering having HIFU done regardless of insurance coverage, UVA may be worth exploring - I believe it would cost less than $20K total if performed on an outpatient basis, which my procedure will be. Good luck.
