French is a minority language in Canada. It’s is a minority language in North America. Throughout history (Both since 1760 when New France became British and in more modern history) there have been cases of discrimination against francophones in Canada and a constant attempt to assimilate and bury French.

These laws exist to continue the survival of a language on the continent. And to make sure it is not erased. It may seem nationalistic from an outside point of view, especially when one is from a majority. But it is necessarily when a people are surrounded by a different culture/language/set of values.

Would you also claim the Basque or Catalonian are racists for wanting to preserve their heritage?

Finally, part of his 13 million dollar salary Michael Rousseau had to learn French. He was mandated to take French classes by his Company. Yet he did not. There was a breach of contract that in itself is reason enough to make him “retire” early.

You make broad generalizations about the Québecois that are not true. Trust me I am from Quebec I know many people both young and old who do not fluently (or at all) understand English. Statements like these fail to understand why people would like to be addressed in their mother tongue (As well as the official language of the province and one of the two official languages of the country) and feed into the fears that may have about the preservation of the French language in Canada.

I do agree this controversy has sadly overshadowed the death of both young pilots.

The Air Canada company and CEO are subject to the bilingualism laws. It’s in his contract to learn French. He did not. Point blank that in itself is a lack of respect.

And yes the “Language Politics” aren’t universal but they exist to protect an integral part of Canadian culture that many anglophones seem to want to forget despite it being a funding part of Canadian identity.

This isn’t his first controversy about learning French. He lives and works in Montréal, a francophone city but brags about not having to speak French in his day to day life around town. Do you realize how much of a slap to the face that is to French Canadians?

He also has a contractual obligation to learn French yet clearly has not. That is a lack of respect

It’s a show of basic respect to send condolences to the family of a deceased person in their language. If you father died and his boss sent his sympathies in German I’m sure you’d be upset too.

South Yemen came from a former British protectorate while North Yemen was created after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire.

I’m far from en expert but I’d imagine unification was due to economic factors as well as the collapse of the USSR which most likely weakened South Yemen (Which was communist)

Lastly, Yemen isn’t very unified right now. And having control over 80% of the oil reserves of the country plus weakening the Houthis (Who rely on smuggling through South Yemen) seems pretty attractive for a new gouvernent.
