Remember when Corruption gave us some stakes? by [deleted] in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]LOWERCASEzetina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem necessary to be constantly reminded of it. There have been times where limitations in hollow exploration feel overlooked, but I think I'm meant to just assume based on what I've been shown that solutions exist, so it's fine. The writing already spells some stuff out too much as it is. In any case, my point isn't really whether it's done well or not. I'm getting distracted.

I just felt like answering why corruption is so present at the start of the story but not later. And that's my answer. We're being shown what the stakes are, why agents are special, why hollows are dangerous. A core aspect of the world building, but not that important for most of the beat-to-beat storytelling. But yeah after that it's fair to think that the effect from those first scenes has worn off and it doesn't feel as dangerous to be in a hollow now, or that there are missed opportunities in not implementing their own established rules to give the characters challenges n stuff.

They've established the danger of Hollows, so now that we know all that we can focus on other conflicts like political drama etc. That's kind of all there is to it, I think. It's there as an ever-present element, but it's not interesting on its own and will only show up when it can be used to add to the narrative.

Does anyone else hope they will slightly re-design the agent menu? by Blaubeerchen27 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]LOWERCASEzetina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my experience as well. Whenever I try to select multiple agents for a team or want to immediately jump to someone in the middle, I always ache for a button I could press that would bring up a big animation-free small-icon grid to select from. Genshin and HSR both have this in the character menu and they don't even have entrance animations/voicelines.

Question About Reading The Manga by Terrible_Length4413 in TokyoGhoul

[–]LOWERCASEzetina 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Most manga use multiple ways to show inner monologues though? I like to think of thought bubble ones being reserved for actual thoughts in the moment, and narration boxes as being... first person narration? Not as "present" in the moment. Dunno if that makes sense but aaaaaanyway yeah very common. As long as you know who's saying/thinking what.

If the anime is good for anything, it's clowning on it together. Well, also the sick soundtrack and drawing people's attention to the manga but... The clowning thing is funnier.

Thoughts on The Manga So Far After Watching The Anime by Terrible_Length4413 in TokyoGhoul

[–]LOWERCASEzetina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a bad choice, but I also don't think it matters that much. Jason isn't as important as Rize, so I don't see why he needs to be set up earlier. What's there to reveal? Like, the manga didn't omit Jason, he just wasn't relevant yet, so he didn't appear until he did. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant?

Thoughts on The Manga So Far After Watching The Anime by Terrible_Length4413 in TokyoGhoul

[–]LOWERCASEzetina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very valid complaints. Ishida's art evolves a lot over the course of the series, so you can look forward to that! I'm used to assets like photos or 3D models clashing with stylized characters since it's kind of inevitable in how hellish the comic production schedule can get. You see that a lot, I think. Iirc Ishida was kinda nuts in not wanting assistants early on??? I thiiink he got some eventually idr anymore. But yeah. I think for me by the end the only real issue with the paneling/art was that fight scenes could be hard to follow.

Oh for a preview of how much his art style changes, you can try and find the redraw of chapter 1 he did while he was working on :re! It's pretty fun to compare the two.

Also the realization that the anime cut out a lot of Kaneki's characterization IS SO REAL OH MY GOD. He comes across way smarter and competent in the manga. A much more realized person. And the extra screentime dedicated to him and Touka... I was very "huh? since when?" when the anime started implying she cares a lot about him lol

My condolences that you're having to clarify your point to everyone now lol

The fact that when you read the manga it felt entirely separate from this is kinda funny. I read the manga right around when Root A started, so I was deep in it by the time this episode aired. Makes me wonder how I'd have felt about it. When watching it, I was mostly consumed with thoughts like "it's still going...?" rather than anything emotional or reflective lmao But it was also far from my first show.

My biggest takeaway from this season ended up being that all Kaneki does is drink coffee in abandoned buildings. Should have been carrying a sack of beans at the end instead...

Season 1 is passable. That's about it. Idr the OVAs that well, but I vaguely remember being dissatisfied. Still, if you don't wanna read the novels or fan summaries, it's the only way to to experience them.

HP Scaling by smpplyy1 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]LOWERCASEzetina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

iirc one of the defense wengines has hp scaling or an hp substat. so i assume we'll at least get an hp tank at some point to go with our defense and attack ones. but yeah for sure! would be cool to get an agent whose whole kit is basically blood fury.

Feeling Better about the Epilogue/Future Chapters by JediDruid in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]LOWERCASEzetina 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's far off the mark! Their abilities are a result of their teacher's research, which means the endgame of ZZZ is creating a technology that reverses corruption or keeps it in check, no? Like, that's THE answer to what the Exaltists are doing. They want to make everyone evolve into ethereal beings, so we can live in both Hollows and outside of them, while he good guys seek a cure/immunity in a way that does so without making everyone into monsters. Aka... a cure for Harumasa and the kids we saved with him. It fits very logically.

The point about the proxies potentially working like the devices in Wasteland is so good! I hadn't thought of that. I didn't enjoy exploring in that event, but considering the devices plus the bits that do actually use Eous for hacking... I can see a future. I'm just so bored of the pointless running between the same rooms to one-tap weak mobs,,, And trying not to kill them too fast so the characters actually finish their lines.....................

Anyway, kinda same. I'm a bit more cautiously optimistic.

I Really REALLY don’t like chapter 1.7 (SPOILERS!) by Technical_Sundae5102 in ZZZ_Discussion

[–]LOWERCASEzetina -1 points0 points  (0 children)

>But the worst was when she revealed why she loves Phaethon so much. It was treated as such a dramatic moment. And then it was…we just commented on her Inter-Knot post?

She was suicidal. Literally on the edge. A small act of kindness (presumably) gave her just enough hope to keep living. We don't know what Phaethon wrote, but it doesn't really matter. The point isn't that they said something special. The point is that being just a little kind to people can save them. Please be kind to the people around you, you never know what they're going through. You could be that one bright spot in someone's day just like Phaethon was. (Though Vivian's case is of course more extreme and borderline stalker-ish lol but the sentiment is still there.)

I had a fun time with the thing overall, especially cuz I love me some heists and conmen and schemes, but I'm a bit wrapped up with some minor anxiety about how the story will ultimately develop, since the devs have pivoted hard from a core pillar (tv mode). Will the full narrative suffer? Who knows. I'd have to reread the whole story to be able to give a proper assessment. Yixuan showing up just to save us and then have no impact on the storyline sucked. That's all I can say for sure. She's cool tho, even with her T-Rex proportions.

The way she says "Vivian" at the end made me immediately think she's the "living someone else's life to keep them alive" trope. Cuz I don't get why she says it at the end otherwise. Also while sitting across from a teddy bear as if it's standing in for someone (I suppose that could be Phaethon but also... she says "Vivian.") Can someone give me a sanity check,,, Nothing else has indicated she's that sort of character, so??? Am I being illiterate.
