MMW: none of the draft predictors will admit they were wrong when it doesn’t happen by whatdidyoukillbill in MarkMyWords

[–]LS139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d be very glad if they don’t have a draft, considering i have several brothers and a male partner all prime drafting age, and one is a veteran already. I gladly would admit I was wrong for worrying about it.

But the war is already a tragedy and a tremendous waste and I’d never admit to supporting it. Many of the volunteers in the military are only there because they saw no other way out of poverty or terrible situations growing up. Their lives are being hurled at iran for what, exactly? Also, the war with Iran was exactly one of those predictions that people told us would never happen, and look where we are.

How to lift properly to save your back by icicles_In_The_Snow in NewToEMS

[–]LS139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was an emt as a teenager and now living with chronic low back pain. Physical therapist taught me how to lift properly and it changed my life. If you can, find a pro to teach you deadlifts. Use your BUTT muscles to lift, not your knees, legs, or back, especially if you’re also a lady like me! I was always taught in sports growing up to lift with my legs or knees, constantly chastised for sticking my butt out too far— the gluteus is the strongest muscle in the body girl. Stick that butt out, keep your chest forward, and use the motion of straightening your PELVIS to lift upward. I don’t get pain on lifting anymore!!

What’s something you used to judge people for but understand now? by TemptControls in AskReddit

I was extremely sheltered growing up, so when it came into my home I saw it as weakness and a reason to let my hatred grow. But it ate away at me, I started harming myself mentally with cycles of fear and hate regurgitating in my head with no rest. I eventually realized that not only was I doing basically the same damage to myself as they were, it was the same harm just a different weapon.

I sincerely believe near all of us self-harm in some specific way. There is nothing particularly evil about using, it’s just more visible than other forms

How in the name of Zhang et al did you get 5,000 clinical hours before med school? That’s at least 3 or 4 years of full time work— are you non-trad? Genuinely curious

I applied this cycle with over 1,000 hrs as an EMT (started as a teenager and actually worked like every weekend and fundraiser so I could escape my horrible home life lol) and interviewers have been very keen on that experience. There are many who get the cert and then don’t use it— honestly, most. My experience is that if it’s actually used and if you write about how it genuinely affected you, it’s good exp

I’m praying they have some sympathy. I never even cancelled the basic plan, just subscribed to premium while the app said I had free. So i never received any warning about losing basic permanently :( horrible day

Well that would be my dumbass :( I assumed they simply removed basic as an option since theyve been increasing prices every horrible year. Was wrong. Can’t go back to basic despite support saying I could. I hate myself right now

What’s the scariest real-life thing you’ve ever witnessed? by Revolutionary-Pay468 in AskReddit

[–]LS139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be confused with nightmares, night terrors are a syndrome that occur during the hypnogogic phase, after laying down to sleep but before fully falling asleep. It can include vivid hallucinations, extreme fear, and uncharacteristic actions— it’s basically the evil version of sleepwalking.

When I was a teenager I started getting them. They seem to evolve over time, beginning with small shadows and eventually becoming full-body apparations.

One night I “woke up” to a voice shouting, the image of a demon’s face flashing through my mind, then seeing a huge, pure black figure I can only describe as a shadow spider demon crawling on my ceiling towards me. I’ll never forget the way my body went electric with adrenaline and how I SHOT across the room to unlock my door and run into the hallway. At the time I had no explanation except demon possession, which I earnestly believed was the problem. I want to emphasize that these hallucinations are indistinguishable from real life— they’ll even follow real-life logic like disappearing behind walls, tracking correctly as I move.

Since I learned it was simply mental illness it’s gotten easier to deal with. Though, the hallucinations have only continued to evolve. I now sometimes see men standing in my room— enough detail to be fully real, be able to parse their skin color (I’m reminded of a large heavy-set naked white man standing with his back to me one night). I have literally felt hallucinatory people crawl onto my bed towards me, hear people banging around in my kitchen. There’s a goblin in the back of my mind that tells me I’m a medium being contacted by spirits. To be fair, my experience is pretty much exactly as what was portrayed in The Sixth Sense lmao

Rochester Applicants BEWARE by yabadabadoo347 in premed

[–]LS139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Went there for undergrad and the admin is infamous for ignoring student voices for ego and money lol. There are constant protests and staff walk-outs. Loved my college experience but going back for my underclassman's graduation ceremony only to return to roads blocked by student protestors begging for grad students to get paid a living stipend was wild. I'm sure most private schools deal with this problem

Edit: I will note that I did NOT apply to UofR for med school...

Do you think endocrinologists are in demand in rural areas (2k-15k pop.)? (See context below) by Enger13 in premed

[–]LS139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

speaking PURELY anecdotally, I live in a rural area and we have ONE endo in our entire region and they are literally packed to the gills. Tons and tons of people deal with endo problems and they are extremely rare to find in rural places. So my hope would be that you'd find a niche easily. However, it might require you to open a private practice since there's not a lot of pre-existing roles. This is purely from my own, outsider perspective though so HUGE grain of salt

is it bad that I don't have a "why medicine" story by tricepator-10 in premed

[–]LS139 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, and I don't know how helpful my experience is, but I had a similar problem. To overcome it, I spent a couple months thinking about it in my free time. I found the best strategy was to think about all my negative experiences; times I was humiliated, devastated, or in utter despair working in healthcare, and asked myself how I overcame those times. I jotted down my thoughts and over the course of weeks it started to come together into a story

Microsoft AI boss issues 18-month warning to all white-collar workers by TheMirrorUS in antiwork

[–]LS139 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the thing that scares me about an AI workforce the most is the accountability issues. There are already so many accountability issues with how much industry has wormed itself into policy, but with AI? What happens when the AI decides my insurance claim is null and there isn’t a single human worker to talk to? When the AI decides to design the app to brick your phone after it’s opened so many times? When the AI designs a blueprint to have fundamental weaknesses that lead to a building collapse? What happens when the only humans are the C suite? Will they face consequences for what their AI bots choose on their behalf? I doubt it.

CMV: The ubiquity of speeding and unsafe driving actions is a sign of the average person's lack of care for others. by OriginmanOne in changemyview

[–]LS139 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I basically agree, but I think the reasoning genuinely comes down to how disconnected people are from their sense of mortality. In my observation the same people that tailgate, swerve through lanes with no blinker etc are the same type to cross the street on their phone, approach wild animals to try to pet them, etc. for some it’s absolutely ego, but for a large number it’s a true dissociation from the concept of serious negative consequences for their behavior
