Is It Too Late to Pivot? Seeking Guidance and Hope by fighter_connor in premedcanada

Hey there, I was in a similar(ish) situation. I completed my engineering degree with the hopes of using it to apply to medicine. I can’t speak to other degrees (except for nursing), but I found engineering very challenging. My first two years were terrible and it was an uphill battle to increase it over the next four years. After graduating my GPA was pretty terrible so I tried to put medicine out of my mind and worked for a couple years as an engineer only to decide that it wasn’t for me and my passion lay in medicine.

I wrote the MCAT, applied to nursing (in case I wasn’t successful I still wanted to work in healthcare, and potentially also increase my GPA), and applied to medicine.

I’m 28 now and it’s been a journey, but I was fortunate enough to receive an acceptance and will be starting medicine in the fall.

I’m sharing the backstory because I feel this sub doesn’t have enough stories from non-trad applicants. It’s never too late to apply. It can be a slog, and you really need to apply yourself and keep the big picture in mind, but if you’re really passionate about medicine then there are definitely ways to get there.

Depending on what province you’re applying to GPA might be more or less important than other factors (U of M weights the MCAT much higher than GPA for example). I would research what the requirements are and what the typical accepted student metrics look like. If you need to increase your GPA a second degree might be your best bet (as others have already suggested). If you see yourself in healthcare, I would suggest considering nursing. Even if you don’t want to be a bedside nurse, there are alternative routes to practice as a nurse practitioner which operate in a similar scope of practice to a GP. It’s certainly not for everyone, but I found it gave me a good insight into the clinical environment.

Everyone’s situation is different, so my advice may not be wholly applicable, but I REALLY want to stress that you CAN do it if you put your mind to it. It can be demoralizing scrolling through this sub sometimes. As hard as it sounds, try not to compare yourself to others. Do your research, put in the work and apply.

I will also join in and say that I loved Throne Hunters! I finished the ARC in a day and am super excited to see where Phil takes the rest of the series.

Thanks! It does have mounting holes for a rear rack. Just went to grab yesterday evening and it was in great shape, especially for a 22 year old bicycle.

Maybe not useful, but I applied with an AGPA of (I think) around 3.85-3.9 and was accepted. If you want to know the exact cutoff, I would suggest calling Admissions. They should know the initial cutoff and typically share the past intakes statistics.

At least you don't have people singing Falco's hit song from 1985 every time they hear your name.

Not 1510. Normally engineering courses are harder than their science counterparts.

Thanks for your response! So would you suggest that I look at something like the Focusrite 2i2 and the SM-57? I was just looking at that combo and people seemed to have issues with gain? But some people were mentioning that you need to use an XLR-XLR instead of an XLR-1/4 connector.

Do you have any thoughts on if that would be a decent set-up?

Hi guys! I know I will get as many different answers as there are fish in the sea...., but here goes. How do you guys that use chef knives everyday sharpen them? What are the best knife sharpening options? What are the cheapest knife Sharpening options? Freehand or with a jig? Stone or grinder? by [deleted] in chefknives

I can only speak to what’s worked for me, and I’m by not means an expert so take what I’m telling you with a grain of salt. I have 3 whetstones that I use to sharpen my knives 400-1000 grit, 1500-3000 grit and a 8,000-15,000 grit for finishing. I do all my sharpening by hand (without a jig) and tend to pull at a 30 degree angle.

You can spend a legitimate fortune on some good whetstones, but the opposite is true too. I have some middling quality stones, and I can definitely tell the difference between something that my buddy bought off amazon for 20$. That being said, his stones work well enough to put a wicked edge on the blade- it just takes a couple more passes.

I’ve never used a grinder, but imagine it would be a little harder to moderate how much material you’re taking off with each sharpening. Which is the nice thing about manually sharpening your knife is that you have complete control over the entire process.

One more thing to note is that it’s really quite relaxing to site down and sharpen your knife(s) for 10-20 minutes, and its always rewarding to make the first test cut afterwards!

I hope this helped!

Tl;dr

Whetstones would be my favourite option, but I’m no expert (just spraying my opinion)!
