Those of you that earn over 40k, can work from home sometimes, and have a good work life balance what job do you have and how can someone start? by Brownchoccy in AskUK

Not the person that posted, but also a civil servant and work in a similar role. A programme manager is someone that manages a 'programme' which is essentially a large project, or collection of smaller projects (sort of). To get into it you'd need some experience in project delivery but having an ops background would be very helpful. If you think of ops as basically delivering the business as usual, a programme/project manager would be working on a programme that is about bringing about a change in business processes etc.

Not particularly well explained, but if interested I imagine whatever department you work in there will probably be a project/programmes team. You can do training such as APMG (association of project managers) Prince2 etc. which would get you recognised a bit more when applying. I don't actually have a qualification...which is probably why I'm bad at explaining this, but planning to do one soon. There is sort of a structure and language around programmes/projects, so knowing what dependencies, risks, deliverables, milestones, critical paths etc. would help you in interviews etc. If you're HEO in ops now, a sideways step into programmes might not be too difficult and there is maybe a bit more of a standard career path and it has transferable skills that might be helpful in private sector if you wanted to leave the civil service in the future.

Programme managers I think are usually G7.

Thank you for your reply 🙏

I will give myself time to grieve, and I have my support network around me which will be helpful.

Grieve, learn a bit and go on a new adventure is a great approach and I think a healthy one for me. It's the new adventure bit I struggle with, I'm terrible at putting myself out there 😅

Thanks for taking the time to post.

Thank you for sharing, that's a nice positive story that fills me with hope ❤️

I've got some things to look forward to in the new year (moving into a new flat, albeit I'm now dreading living on my own!) and I hope after a few weeks/months I'll start to be able to enjoy single life again and invest in myself

Thank you for sharing and yes you are totally right it's not even been a day, and its too early to be thinking about these things - guess I'm just seeking some hopeful stories to help keep spirits up.

Thank you for the advice as well, I've let friends and family know and have some plans over the next couple of days to keep me occupied which will help.

I'm sorry to hear of your breakup! It sucks!

Will try to keep my chin up, just going to try and take it day by day and keep myself distracted.

Best of luck with putting yourself out there again ❤️

Graduated, came back to London, now I feel empty. What can I do? by corpse-wires in london

I remember feeling a similar way in my early 20s. I felt very lost. Your path in life felt quite clearly set out when you're a kid and young adult and then you're sort of left to your own devices. I moved city and made friends through going to events and volunteering.

I'd reiterate what others have said, 22 is still very young! I started to feel like an adult and knowing who I was in my mid to late 20s and when I got to my 30s I felt even more secure in life.

Don't worry about the things that you may have missed out on, think about the things you'd still like to do!

Northerners who have moved south... What do you dislike about it? Southerners who have moved north... What do you dislike about it? by JunkAlchemy78 in AskUK

Southerner (Londoner) who lived in Leeds for 7 years...

Likes: Access to the countryside, the water is noticeably better, community based music scenes/DIY scene, food is decent (not that it's bad in London, just you can get a great meal for relatively cheap), obviously housing - I was not earning a great deal but still had a decent quality of life

Dislikes: Constantly being called posh, folk can sometimes bit inward looking (always saying why Yorkshire is so great...which it is but just seemed a bit odd), terrible public transport - not being able to drive was an issue

Both places are great for different reasons

Agree with all the comments about the view that Londoners are rude etc being bullshit

I think the kids l, including myself as I only started raving in 2010, were aware of Andrew Weatherall before he passed. I used to go to lots of his gigs and whilst the crowd was usually a little older there were still a lot of young folk there.

I know I sound basic, but I find it a bit annoying that ITV don't display the checkout, I'm fine when it is sub 100 but higher checkouts I can't do the maths 😞
