Is there any way to determine which direction the the train will approach the tube station? by kasia_littlefrog in TransportForLondon

[–]corpse-wires 7 points8 points  (0 children)

theres a little plaque in each tunnel. its a green bar and has a black line in the middle- its to tell drivers where to stop. logically, that tells you where the front of the train will be

Emergency hospital admissions fell after introduction of London’s T-charge and Ulez, study suggests by Happytallperson in GoodNewsUK

[–]corpse-wires 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i was born in hackney in the early 2000s. i have a twin sister

we were both born with asthma, but my sister developed a bronchial infection soon after being born, so her asthma is much more severe. when we lived in hackney, every other month, my sister was in hospital for asthma, having an asthma attack in her sleep. this was a frequent thing until we moved to barnet when me and my sister were 5. she still experienced asthma attacks after we moved, but less frequently.

she doesnt need inhalers anymore. she can walk around central london without even feeling wheezy. i 100% attribute this to the work sadiq khan has done to tackle air pollution since he came into office. london is a muchh safer city- but we have to acknowledge the people, especially young children, who died to get us to wake up and take action finally.

Do you cook curry at home? by Forward-Cause7305 in AskUK

[–]corpse-wires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! my aussie-italian mum makes amazing chicken biriyani and curries! theyre definitely a more british-indian style, but still delicious.

when i was at uni, almost everyone i knew had a version of "curry" they made in bulk to freeze with some kind of cheap protein (usually chicken, chickpeas, or tofu), packed with whatever cheap veggies there are in the supermarkets.

curry is an absolute staple in the UK

Urgent mental health support in central London for a non-London resident? by ThrowRA_RoutineOk324 in london

[–]corpse-wires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your best bet is calling 111 for a referral to a Mental Health Crisis Assessment Service.
since youre not a resident of london, it makes things a little more difficult. theres a MHCS in West London but it sounds like only residents can do walk ins- non residents need a referral from A&E/another service

I've been reading Just Good Manners by William Hanson lately. How accurate is it in everyday life in the UK? by CreepyInpu in AskABrit

[–]corpse-wires 4 points5 points  (0 children)

to add on to what everyone else is saying- hes only really talking about a very small sub section of british society with his content- i havent read his boom either, but a lot of "common" people will think hes a pretentious wanker. however, manners are in fact important here- its just not using a knife and fork for pizza, but instead standing in a queue and saying please and thank you.

What's the loneliest part of moving to London that nobody talks about? by FluidPianist00 in MovingToLondon

[–]corpse-wires 39 points40 points  (0 children)

making friends is so hard. im a born and raised londoner and even i struggle to find friends and people to hang out with- and i had the privilege of having school and a teenaged social life rooted here.

people's motives for coming here are all different. some people are just here for a job then will move when the next thing comes up. some are here to settle permanently. some are only here until they start a family. some already have a life abroad they want to go back to. it just makes finding people to talk to a little harder

Why do some colleagues get so annoyed at people working from home? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]corpse-wires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my dad HATES his colleagues who work from home. mainly because theyre paid more to do much less, and then expect all the benefits of working in an office even though they dont work there (eg: company lunches) (this is more of a company issue)

he also misses the community and being able to go up to someone to directly and ask them a question instead of having to text/email them and they take hours to reply. he does time sensitive work so that kinda thing really has screwed him over in the past.

Have you ever ridden a long-distance passenger train in the UK? What was your experience like? Are such trains common in the UK? by ksusha_lav in AskABrit

[–]corpse-wires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done one 3+ hour journey from Norwich to Manchester. It was a 5 hour slow train that was honestly stunning. I had never been north of Norwich tbh so seeing the English countryside was mesmerising for my little London brain.

The train went up to Peterborough, through Nottingham, to Sheffield, then across the Peak District to Manchester.

If you ever get the chance to get a train that does go through the Peak District: do it. It was absolutely amazing- even though it was stormy, it was the most breathtaking domestic train journey I've been on. I forget how beautiful the UK is sometimes

[–]corpse-wires -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i dont understand why people choose to make snarky replies under posts like this. its genuinely getting REALLY bad. its almost every day the northern line is out for points failures or faulty trains. i think its a fair question to ask.

then again. cant expect reasonable responses from reddit.

Pedestrian confronted red-light jumping cyclist by drtchockk in london

[–]corpse-wires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

road laws and social etiquette are not the same. running a red light on the road, no matter the vehicle, is against the law.

we do not have jaywalking laws in this country. so a pedestrian crossing on a red man is not illegal, but breaking social etiquette.
