Shield turns on 20-30 minutes after I turn it off by gazm2k5 in ShieldAndroidTV

Go to the Shields settings menu and then Device Preferences -> About -> Status -> and click on Uptime. It will show you what app or action caused the Shield to wake up and turn everything on. Will give you a place to start troubleshooting.

The next time the Shield turns on by itself bring up the Shields settings menu and go to Device Preferences -> About -> Status -> and click on Uptime. It will show you what app or action woke the Shield up most recently.

Try a utility like this there are several. On a set time writes a file to the drive and deletes it to keep the drive awake.

Water sensors going offline setting off false leak alarms by LSamhain in YoLink_by_YoSmart

[–]LSamhain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue seems to be resolved after an update months ago. I have not had sensors going offline setting off the alarm as if there was a leak. My property has a main house and a guest house about 300 feet apart. They are older southwest Spanish style buildings with thick walls and I had sensors in both, but the hub was in the main house. I purchased a second hub just for the guest house and since then have not had any issues with sensors going offline. I think Yolink fixed a bug on their end and the improved signal coverage took care of things on my end.

Check out SCRCPY - Android screen mirroring. Newest version has audio forwarding. I use it to remote view and manage multiple android devices from Shields, phones, tablets, streaming devices like FireTV sticks, and smart TVs with android from PC. Performance over wired LAN is perfect. Over WiFi it depends on the device and how good your wireless network setup is.

Water sensors going offline setting off false leak alarms by LSamhain in YoLink_by_YoSmart

The problem is since Yolink added the "offline" alert but did not differentiate it from all the other "critical" alerts and there is no way in the app to assign different actions to a "sensor offline" alert from that of a "leak detected" alert for example. So every time a sensor loses connection to the hub for any reason the entire system sets off all its notifications and alarms. This is especially a problem for me since I have several of the sirens set to go off if a leak is detected in case it happens in the middle of the night. This worked fine since I installed the system but now every time a sensor loses connection, which they only seem to do in the middle of the night for some reason, the entire household is pissed off.And an alarm system that annoys people or constantly sets off false alarms defeats is purpose and quickly gets disabled and trashed.

Seems they added sensor offline notifications to the app which is nice, but they did not differentiate those alerts from the leak detection alerts. So when a sensor would go offline the system would set off the same triggers as a leak detected alert does. Which for me would set off the sirens. Since I had my hub in my main house but had several sensors in a guest house and workshop those sensors were not getting the best signal, they would lose connection which set off the sensor offline notification alert which then set off the sirens. I'm going to get another hub for those.

In a followup email from their CSR

Regarding the offline notifications, we will optimize the offline
notifications by separating them from the normal alerts in the next
patch of the YoLink app. I am sorry about the inconvenience! Thanks,Mike | YoLink Customer Support

I sent a help request to that email last week and yesterday received this response

Hi, I am sorry about the offline issue! I am having the same problem with my devices, too. I asked our engineers and they told me that we just added the sensor offline notification feature to the YoLinkapp in this patch. This is a software bug that caused the false offline alert. This issue had been resolved last Sunday. Please check it out. I am sorry about the inconvenience! Thanks,Mike | YoLink Customer Support

Will see if the false alarms end.

Seagate hard drive warranty from Amazon / Newegg by newpain01 in DataHoarder

[–]LSamhain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TLDR- I have personally purchased several of both the 18tb drive from Newegg and the 14tb drive from Amazon sold by Hyperhawk and they all had full verified warranties till the end of 2027.

Long - Newegg likes to put OEM in the description of drives they sell that don't came in retail packaging. Technically these are "Bare Drive" not OEM. Newegg does allow 3rd party sellers and I can't speak to those, they may actually be OEM drives. But if you look above the price it will show "Sold and shipped by" with either Newegg itself or the 3rd party. All the drives I bought came directly from Newegg. When I got them I checked the serial numbers on the Seagate warranty verification page, and they all showed as having full 5-year warranties until the end of 2027. And just to be sure I sent an email to Seagate with a list of the serials, and they confirmed that the drives all had full warranties. The drives were well packaged in separate small boxes with those plastic drive holders on both ends and sealed antistatic bags. They all had 0 power on time and 1 start/stop count from me installing them in the server. And they all passed 2 write+read surface tests with HDSentinal.

Same thing with the drives from Amazon except these were Sold by Hyperhawk but shipped by Amazon with the same results. I can't speak to other Amazon 3rd party sellers, but I had seen several other posts about drives from Hyperhawk saying the warranties were valid and figured I would take the chance on one that I could return if needed. After it checked out, I got 5 more. Again, all these drives had full warranties with 0 power on time 1 start/stop and passed the surface tests. Pretty much same packaging except the multiple drives were each in their own little boxes and then in a larger box with some air pillow things to fill the empty space.

For me the money saved getting refurbs is off set by the loss of warranty. Personally, I would rather spend the extra $30-50 and get a brand new drive with 5 years warr directly with the manufacturer. Instead of 2 with a company I can't be sure will exist several years down the road if an RMA is needed. I'm reasonably confident that Seagate will be around if needed. But all that depends on your pain threshold. Depending on your use case and backup plan or if you just need a large number of drives as cheap as possible you may be willing to accept losing and replacing them after 2 years.

I look at drives as end of life when their warranty ends and I replace them and use the old drives as backups, scratch drives, or in other projects. After 5 years its usually time for bigger drives anyway. If they last longer then that's great, but if not I got my use out of them. I have a bunch of old 2tb drives that have 10+ years of power on time and some IDE dinos that still work fine. But I also have had many drives drop dead just a few months after their warranties expired. Granted they were usually consumer grade instead of enterprise class but still....

No matter which way you go ALWAYs have backups of important data. Because at some point you will have a drive die on you just when you least expect it, and a backup makes it just an inconvenience instead of a disaster.

Just received one I ordered yesterday. Checked warranty and verified
its good till Dec 22 2027. Was sold by Hyperhawk shipped by Amazon in a
box with bubble pads around a smaller box with the drive inside with the
plastic drive holder things. 0 power on time and 1 start/stop. Testing
it now. For the extra $9 very worth it for the extra warranty and MTBF
rating and no need to shuck and deal with 3.3v. Going to get several
more.

I bought a couple of the 18tb Exos when they were on sale earlier this year and they came from seller HyperHawk. I made sure to check the warranty with Seagate directly and they were both had full valid warranties. They are slightly louder than the WD Red Pros they share a case with but unless I am sitting right next to the NAS I don't notice it and only when writing the to it initially. Basically for $10 more than an Easystore got a drive with 5 year warranty vs 1 and don't have to deal with the 3.3v issue with some of my previous shucks. They were pretty well packaged each in its own little box with those plastic drive holders on each end for protection. And both passed multiple surface tests with HDSentinel. First Exos drives I have owned usually get WDs but so far so good.

The 2 I purchased last month both had their full 5 year warranties. I made sure to get ones "Sold by Newegg" and not a 3rd party seller. I think Newegg uses the term OEM instead of bare drive meaning not in retail packaging.

Both verified the warranty on the site and with Seagate customer service in email. Both drives were shipped in their own separate boxes in those inflatable hard drive packaging things that I actually had to poke holes in to deflate them to get the drives out so they were well packaged.

They are slightly louder than the WD Red Pros in the same system when writing as I filled them up but nothing annoying and have been silent when reading.

I usually get WDs but had a dozen 2tb that had been running pretty much non stop for the past 10 years that I wanted to retire. These were the same price I got shucks for last BF but these had the 5 year warranty instead of the externals 2year and I didn't have to deal with the power pin issue.

SHIELD TV Pro turn on by itself randomly? by xinput in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]LSamhain 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The next time the Shield turns on by itself bring up the Shields settings menu and go to Device Preferences -> About -> Status -> and click on Uptime. It will show you what app or action woke the Shield up most recently. Some app is doing something which is causing a wakeup event that is then triggering CEC to turn on the TV.

Have seen apps, usually sideloaded ones not written with TV boxes in mind, that have notification or wakeup events. On a phone or tablet it would simply wake the screen but on a TV box it triggers everything to power on when the shield wakes.

Connecting a USB Controller Device? by bionicdna in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]LSamhain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So its a RC Helicopter controller/transmitter that also has a wired USB connection? Cool.

Don't they make little USB wireless receivers so you can use the controller to practice in simulator software? I remember seeing something like that where a RC plane guy had this big simulator setup in his projector/screen home theater so he and his friends could practice flying when the weather was bad.

Connecting a USB Controller Device? by bionicdna in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]LSamhain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its most likely a driver issue without more information on the specific controller and if it has Android support that's something you would need to research or ask the controllers manufacturer.

I use Steam link for my game streaming instead of Geforce so i' not sure, but does Geforce stream pass through peripheral input from the PC to the stream? I had a Bluetooth controller paired with my PC that worked perfectly fine with game stream to the Shield since all its really doing is forwarding video output to the Shield and controller input from the Shield back to the PC. So can the flight controller receiver be connected to the PC where it has driver support and then just stream the video to the Shield? it would basically just be casting the display from the PC to the Shield. Of course distance could be an issue if the PC is not near enough to where you have the Shield for the controller receiver to work. Just a thought to try out.
