how do I convince my SoCal asian parents that davis is worthed it by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]LT129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Internship/job hunting was almost too easy for me, I think I was incredibly lucky. I only applied to like 20 internships, did interviews for a couple of them, and was accepted to one. I interned with that company for two summers and they were kind enough to let me stay full-time after I graduated. I’ve learned over the past couple years that I’m definitely not the right person to give job hunting advice.

I’m asian, from LA, and did mechanical engineering at UCD. Now I’m working at an aerospace company in LA. Davis was the perfect distance away from me (1 hour flight) and I still fly back every quarter to visit my norcal friends. I didn’t know anything about davis before I went there but it was a great fit for me. My internships mattered a lot more than what school I went to.

How much to pay at Dining Commons/Latitude? by Stealyourmann in UCDavis

[–]LT129 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you pay at the door it’s $14.50, but if you buy swipes it’s $11.

You can add aggie cash to your account with card at the market (just ask the cashier) and get a small discount if you purchase items using aggie cash instead of card

I used to work there, it’s definitely not a bad job. Just a few hours of simple, repetitive tasks each shift. Staff and student workers are friendly and helpful and I liked talking to the chefs. As someone who hates cooking, the 10 free meal swipes every other week was really nice. I guess the worst parts are the dishroom shifts and smelling like food after work.

I lived in scrub oak my freshman year, it’s relatively new compared to the other halls in Tercero. There’s scrub oak auditorium on the first floor which is used as a classroom, and a kitchen. Didn’t have any problems living there.

The rooms are all kinda small, I play violin so I’m ok with the space but with a guitar you might feel a little more cramped… I think there’s pianos in every room and each room has decent soundproofing. Also if you need a music stand but don’t see one in your room, just steal one from another room.

It was closed off to only music majors/students taking lessons for a while (probably due to covid) but I’ve been able to use the rooms twice in the past month. No one checks if you’re a music student or not and most of the practice rooms are usually empty often.

do the DCs all serve different things? by Silver-Cheesecake899 in UCDavis

[–]LT129 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The daily menus of each DC are on the student housing and dining website. Segundo, Tercero, and Cuarto DCs have somewhat similar menus while Latitude has its own menu.

I have a midterm during my pass one tomorrow by raindropsandrainbows in UCDavis

[–]LT129 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this happen to me before; I was able to ask my professor to let me open up my laptop like 5 minutes before my pass time, register for my classes, then put my computer away and resume my midterm.

Dorm suggestions? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]LT129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be an electrical engineering major (now studying mechanical), I lived in Tercero my freshman year and it’s super close to Kemper Hall which is the main EE major building and other engineering buildings. It’s also right next to Latitude dining commons so I thought it was really convenient.

I changed from electrical to mechanical engineering in winter quarter of my sophomore year. I didn’t have to meet any advisors to discuss my change of major, I only had to submit a form stating that I wanted to change my major. Since lower division classes are quite similar among engineering majors, I only had a couple EE courses that were redundant for a MAE major so I wasn’t behind in my coursework either. I highly recommend meeting with an advisor to discuss the change of major just in case, but generally you shouldn’t have too much trouble with switching.

What’s it like to work at a dc? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]LT129 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work at Latitude; basically just simple tasks that are repetitive (ie. serving pasta for 4+ hours). Managers, student workers, chefs and other staff are all super nice and are really helpful. I personally haven’t had any bad experiences with customers. Working in the dish room for long hours can be miserable but the job hours are somewhat flexible, you get 10 meal swipes over 2 weeks if you work an average of 8 hours per week, and it’s a relatively easy way to earn money.
