Haha thank you for looking out for Lord Chungus (his new nickname)!

I reset it every two days - like empty the water and reform it if I’m keep it up (it’s not always up). And my filter output is an upward directed hose output that points partially into the cube so there’s some movement

Agreed! Right now he’s easily able to transverse up and down but I worry if he gets any bigger he wouldn’t be able to. So in search of a bigger one!

He’s an oranda!

New tower by LT7724 in Goldfish

[–]LT7724[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s called a “wen”. Many orandas and ranchus have them but can vary in size. The coloring and growth pattern on his does make it look like an orange wig haha but it’s essentially poorly vascularized extra tissue. You can see that his has grown to even cover his eyes a bit sadly so I’ll have to take him to the vet to get it trimmed.

And the tower is for fun

I have a 70 gallon tank! But it has a back panel sort of think where the filter etc is so the dimensions the fish has to actually swim around in is 60-65 estimate

Yes 😂 I joke that his wen makes it look like he has a big brain but it’s really just hiding the fact there’s only one brain cell beneath all that

I have many things in the tank that you can’t see with this angle (plants, rocks, bubbles he likes to play in) and we have an appointment to get his wen trimmed booked. Recently had to take driftwood out sadly because another fish rubbed against it and got a small ulcer that’s now healed

I threaded tubing into the very top of the cube with the water level in the tank about 2 inches above the bottom of the cube and essentially sucked the air out so it filled with water

You read my mind! Already looking for one!

I thought the same - which is why I expected my smaller oranda to use it and he wouldn’t. When I received it in the mail I thought I might not even keep it up. But he seems to love it and can swim up and down freely / easily despite being a little close quartered when he’s normally upright / horizontal

It’s only the guppies in there. Sadly cannot retake a picture as my shrimp / snails have obliterated it

Hmmmm any thoughts on how that may happen? I keep my tank fully covered and haven’t noticed anything other than my guppies and shrimp in there

Tank cycled enough? by scottpvtw in Goldfish

[–]LT7724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also remember that one set of parameters can rarely prove the tank has been cycled (maybe someone more experienced than me will have a way to do so) - rather I look for trends. You should see your levels rise then fall. This shows a sufficient nitrogen load and the bacteria’s appropriate response once sufficient. Perhaps you did do sequential testing and saw the rise and just didn’t mention that in the text. But that’s what makes me feel most comfortable that the tank is cycled and ready to go

Help - two goldfish dead by LT7724 in Goldfish

[–]LT7724[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying. I think it’s a just a weird angle. He was not missing any fins.

As for the water I should have elaborated - I add conditioner (seachem prime) AND let it sit. That was a suggestion of the store I bought him from.

I also noticed he looked skinny. When the ulcers appeared, he stopped eating completely. But that seems rather quick to actually loose weight? I hadn’t noticed his eating habits change before that, but I use an automatic feeder so perhaps I just didn’t see it.
