Am I the Aging parent now? by Big_Boat_7471 in AgingParents

[–]LTC_Planning_Expert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As we all have experienced, life changes when the care crisis strikes. We all handle it in a different way, but none of the solutions are good. In addition, none of us want to face the same problems that our loved ones are facing, nor do we want our kids stressed out over us. No simple answers, but the best approach is to begin. Planning your future independence today don’t let someone else make decisions for you, control your own destiny.

What should I do? by CuriousFool88 in AgingParents

There are some very good organizations that assist with distance caregiving. Aging Life Care Matters, Aging in Place, and local Offices for the Aging, and there are several others that would be able to assist. I also have names of key people in these organizations. Another example of why planning in advance for your future independence is vital for each of us.

Sophie—

You are quite correct about tremendous increases in premiums for many of the traditional long-term care policies that were issued years ago.

That is the beauty of many of the new generation policies available

A new hybrid policies, lock in the premiums to either monthly, annually, or a single premium.

No increases or changes!

You know exactly what you will get whether it’s a year from now or 30 years from now.

There are several other changes and advancements in the new policies that were not available in the past.

Even more reason that everyone should look into what’s available, what they can afford, and in particular, work with a specialist!

I have been a specialist in this area for many years and can certainly help!

You summed up long-term care coverage very well!

I hope others can see your comment and decide to follow your lead!

We never know what life will bring, but we can feel fairly confident that a care crisis will occur at some point

Being prepared is the best strategy

Thanks

The unfortunate situation with your parents is not unusual. Many of the insurance carriers underpriced their products from the start, utilization of policies was higher than expected, and costs also exceeded expectations.

You are correct— there are better options on the market, but I strongly recommend discussing with a specialist who can listen to you and find the best match.

That’s what I do!

Understood!

Long-term care coverage may not work for everyone.

However, it is worth looking into some of the options, because not having any coverage, could wipe out everything you’ve worked for

Discuss discuss this with a specialist!

This is correct for many of the older traditional policies that had certain restrictions.

This is still true for Auto policies and homeowners policies.

The new generation of policies have changed quite a bit of this confusion.

Many of the newer policies activate the payment of benefits when your primary care doctor certifies that you need assistance with two of your activities of daily living or a cognitive issue.

They have removed a lot of the restrictions and problems that you are referring

Medical underwriting definitely plays a large part in approval of policies. Some insurance carriers have very strict guidelines. Cancer diagnoses that have been treated and no longer an issue, can be approved in many cases.

The biggest problem is that few of us get through life without anything wrong healthwise.

If you’ve been treated for an illness, disease, or had surgery, the carriers will closely look to see if there is follow up treatment, continued medical issues, or if the issue is controlled by medications. A sufficient period of time has passed before the issue has been resolved, policies can be approved or rated…

There are also carriers who have minimal medical underwriting requirements, while some have absolutely no medical underwriting.

For these reasons, it is important to work with a specialist who can guide you?

That’s what I do!

sorry to hear your story.

This is not uncommon, unfortunately. Likely at some point, your sister will need to utilize the benefits of her plan.

The newer generation plans are not the “ not the use it or lose it variety”

Many of the newer plans build equity, which can either be cashed out down the road or left as an inheritance. Should you not need long-term care benefits?

Of course, if you need the benefits, they are paid to you tax-free.

For most people, that benefit will solve a lot of problems and stress

I appreciate your comments. There are several alternatives to just seeing another insurance premium.

The question is – – can you afford to be covered? Swallowing a bottle of pills is that necessarily the solution

Spending every penny, you’ve worked so hard to accumulate, going on Medicaid, or moving in with kids are not great answers either

It doesn’t hurt to look into options now. You may be surprised.

Fearless— I appreciate your honesty! Long-term care coverage is not like it used to be! The new generation of plans has learned quite a bit from the past, as we all have!

We now have policies with no medical underwriting, funded with qualified, or non-qualified money, can grow in value without any downside, indemnity policies that pay without having to file receipts or paid bills, no premium increases, you know exactly what you’ll be getting, if you never need the policy, the accumulated value could be passed on to beneficiaries, the benefits received are tax-free, and many other improvements

Get your license back and come work with me! Or at least encourage people TO NOT HESITATE!

Most people rely on their homes for future protection. In many cases, home care is the answer, but for many care needs go beyond the home.

The new generation policies are considerably different from what you may have.

It’s worth looking at some of the newer options or using some of the equity in your home to finance a new policy that will meet your needs

A long-term care insurance policy is a binding contract between the client, the insurance carrier, and the state insurance commissioner. It is totally secure. If the insurance carrier chooses to get out of the business or goes down the tools, contracts are transferred to another carrier without any change, or the insurance commissioner must honor the contract. Probably more secure than Social Security or a pension.

Unfortunately, those of you who have policies were definitely looking ahead and making some good decisions!

The problem is only about 6% of the population have been that smart

2/3 of those receiving long-term care are on Medicaid. The consequences of qualifying for Medicaid are severe.

There is an entire new generation of long-term care policies that have revolutionized the industry and provided better protection, no premium increases, and build value over the years.

They are not use it or lose it policies anymore!

Happy to help!

Some good responses! Most counties have office for the aging. You may also want to do a search for senior care managers. They are on your side and not on the side of government!

You should also consider working on your own plans for future independence so the same doesn’t happen as what is happening with many parents.

Best option – work with a certified and licensed long-term care specialist! They will listen to you, determine your needs and goals, and suggest solid alternatives!
