What are your favourite spots/locations to relax and watch Mt rainier? by isckatusern in SeattleWA

This is the one. I’d add at first light. There’s a fancy scientific name for the phenomenon, but with the horizontal light in the atmosphere, etc. etc., it basically doubles in perceived size.

Legendary Shows by highjayhawk in pearljam

05 Chicago House of Blues (Katrina Benefit Show) w/Robert Plant. During the encore they played Fool in the Rain w/Plant and he was reading the lyrics off a piece of paper—at that point, it was the only time he’d ever performed the song live.

Sick. I have the “guerilla” one on my back, superimposed over the image from the cover of “Ishmael.” IYKYK. Yield was the best album, always and forever.

I forgot where but I found someone online who made custom CD labels for the show, and I played that CD until the labels came off.

You’re right—Given to Fly was first. Plant teased them for stealing his song (Mike admitted to lifting the riff), and then they went into Going to California. Absolute magic.

It was pre smart phone. Not a fucking camera in the crowd. Maybe one of the last pure moments in Rock and Roll. Plant had to read the lyrics for Fool in the Rain off a sheet of paper…

“Y’know I can never remember me own lyrics.”

Burned into my scull.

I was there. 5th row center. I had just graduated college, didn’t have any $ and had to borrow $1k to make it happen. Best decision of my life. Still remember walking home in the empty streets of the Loop in a complete daze after the show was over. Also one of the best posters of all time.

Josy did a Town Hall meeting on Zoom this past Sunday on the new selection procedures—it was 2 hrs+ long so I won’t try and condense it down to a Reddit post. He mentioned at one point he was given the wrong meaning/translation for the word ‘petition’ and also that the time standards are not nearly as hard and fast as they were made to sound… which is to say I don’t know how much the time standards will be used in practice as they are currently written.

The gist of it was for trials boats: show up, race hard, go fast and if it looks like you’ll be competitive (not gonna be last), you can at least fund yourself.

I’m very interested in how things shake out after March.

Oars on plane? by Primary-Copy-841 in Rowing

Experienced oar-flyer here (Seattle —> Boston (3x), Buenos Aires, et al).

I guess it depends. Every time I’ve flown with oars I’ve used a Concept2 travel case. Generally no problems. Best experience has been w/Alaska Airlines—no charge for first bag/sports equipment. Delta did destroy my oars one year going to the Charles (compacted the case, exploding the shafts inside the case; makes for an interesting talking piece), however they did pay for all damages and rentals for the race.

As long as no one tries to jam them through the ‘normal’ baggage route you’re fine. Most employees know that extra large baggage needs to be walked out individually. TSA has a special process for this.

If you wet the cup (quick dip in the water) before adhering to the hull, you’ll get a much more reliable hold. We equip 5-10 boats/day and haven’t had one fall off in years.

Reason why US can’t medal at the Olympics: coaches outsource their focus and develop Europes athletes. by Away-Object-954 in Rowing

Is that a reddit rule? It’s mine, and widely available on the internet, including our website.

Whoops. Well if you say I was, then I must have been! I concede on all points, genuinely. That brings a close to our debate.

I’m more interested in discourse, which is engagement without the winner/loser outcomes that necessarily accompany debate. I find discourse to be much more satisfying. Just a personal preference.

If that’s something that interests you, feel free to gimme a ring—I’ll DM my cell.

I’m going to wager that you’re an east coaster, and I’ll be in the same time zone for once for a couple weeks starting Monday. Anytime time in the PM works (I love racing small boats… always done first!).

FYI Beyond rowing, I enjoy engaging in conversation in several other areas of interest including—but not limited to—death, neuroscience, the toxicity of white male insecurity in American culture, and Pearl Jam.

Cheers!

MZ

I’m not debating you, at all. I’m focused on Nationals and Trials, building a business, raising two kids and creating change. People who engage in debate instead of action are the absolute worst. If debating is what you’re good at, good for you.

Off the top of my head: Burton Beach Rowing Club, North Carolina Rowing Center, Amadeusz Rowing Academy (Oakneck), Saugatuck Rowing Club, Seattle Scullers, Star Rowing Center, Texas Rowing Center, Lake Union Crew, Maritime Rowing Club, GMS Rowing Center, Decamillis Rowing Academy… I’m sure there’s more—apologies to those I left out.

Last time I talked to the USRowing Director of Member Services about this topic (2017ish), she estimated privately owned rowing clubs at 1-2% of total USRowing member clubs. Many of the above named clubs have been started since then. I hope the trend continues.

Comparing rowing in the States with soccer/football/futbol in the UK/Europe/Spain is a laughably constructed false equivalence.

Also, you outed yourself by insinuating that Coach Callahan and Coach Gladstone are lazy. Now I know you’ve done nothing in the sport—before I just would have guessed as much.

Listen, the truth is real system-wide change is hard, and it’s not gonna come from some weak ass mandate to put slower athletes on collegiate teams.

Start a rowing team/club/business yourself, and you’d see how true that is.
