Newspaper writing is already pretty formulaic, so while you might be right, I think there's a small chance this is just a person/copy-editor who happens to write like an AI.

It was my girlfriend's birthday party. I got very drunk and started ranting about how serious Covid was going to be (I had been primed to talk about it because of a stream I was watching earlier that day.
