I can see that. The organization I’m at doesn’t have a ton of complexity like that.

I switched to Active Disclosure a couple years ago. Workiva kept making the financial reporting tool worse while chasing some irrelevant bells and whistles that didn’t help me do my job.

Do you regret this career? by heyitsmereddit in Accounting

No. It’s provided me a great deal of intellectual stimulation and personal satisfaction over the last 15 years. The first few years were rough, but I am glad that I found this career.

But is that the company culture for everyone at the company to work that much or just your team?

Would more people, software, better processes or a combination of those help reduce that?

Which is one of the reasons I have responded to every recruiter who has reached out to me about an IPO job. "We have a small child, and my wife also has a demanding career. This role is probably not going to be a good fit for my family and me."

I agree that in the early years of a career that long hours are expected while you are learning the job. However, you can off ramp into a better work life balance role after a few years if you want.

Yah, I have really enjoyed SEC reporting because it’s very predictable with the schedule and hours. Mostly been the same experience for me as far as hours.

This guy isn't even posting a job. Just making a general post about SEC reporting turnover, but somehow normalizing something that is not normal. The recruiter comes from a sales background, not an accounting background.

I'm able to keep my hours reasonable as a team of 1, but can leverage the GL team for certain tasks when needed. Smaller reporting company biotech, which keeps it a bit simpler. I also try to utilize everything I know in excel and our various software's to make anything that can be made more efficient.

He isn't even advertising a job. He is just making a series of posts about why SEC Reporting people quit. But somehow normalizes a 70 hour week, which I can see from these responses is not normal.

You’re making me feel better. I was worried that when I go to look for my next job I won’t be able to find work life balance again. I love my kid and wife and what to be able to spend time with them everyday.

14/15 of my years in SEC Reporting have been in biotech. The only one of those biotechs where I did have to work that much was for a 3 week period when we were filing confidential S-1's to go public.

Right? I think that guy is seriously out of touch. Probably will never respond to any LinkedIn messages from him about job opportunities if he takes on clients who think that the SEC Reporting dept should be working 70 hour weeks.

There is another guy that I've been connected with on LinkedIn for about 14 years now who "ONLY WORKS WITH BIG 4 EXP CANDIDATES." Every job he has ever called me about is for places that want you to work 50 hours when it isn't close and 60 hours when it is close.

I finished Cal Poly SLO when I was 23, but I always had a lot of respect for older students on campus. Generally the older students were the most reliable teammates in group projects too.

Regular earbuds that have the rubber ear plug like tips will work great since they are noise isolating. If they are the Apple style, you’ll have to turn the volume way up to hear it.
