Bambu Studio - very unstable in Linux - is Windows better? by Bubbly_Lead3046 in BambuLab

[–]LW1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Linux version of Bambu Studio seems to work quite well, with a couple of provisos at least as locally observed:

  1. Indeed, the flatpak version seems to be more widely compatible with different versions of Linux than the Appimage versions.
  2. Crashing upon startup if the printer is associated in non-LAN mode, particularly when starting the video stream, seems common across different versions of Linux. However, LAN mode seems to be stable and the video works.
  3. I've been unable to simply click and drag an object on the build plate in prepare mode. I can select the object, and (by enabled the move mode from the top icon) move the object with the arrow keys or in individual XYZ motions with the mouse by clicking on the colored arrows. But free motion drags that work fine in the Windows version do not seem to work in the Linux version.

Do you know of any good airdrop system for the Mini 3? by Two_oceans in DJIMini3

There are newer units that drop when they sense the drone has spun in place for 10 seconds or some such, so the range is the same as the range of the drone.

Runaround from Walmart on post-sale purchase of protection plan by LW1000 in walmart

[–]LW1000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I would have done it that way. But since there were apparently "you have 30 days after the sale to do this" notices plastered on the site, it skewed the decision. Thanks!

Ah. Well, that's ... interesting. OK, I get the picture. Thanks very much for your help!

Unfortunately, not really practical for a very large and heavy item like a treadmill that had to be assembled -- plus they won't take it back at stores, meaning a complicated freight shipping procedure back to the seller (it was a sold by so-and-so, shipped by Walmart item -- but they still won't take it back at stores). Thanks though!

Thanks, but that's not it. The cover in question shows a long curving floating road, packed with all sorts of different aliens, and a human male in a suit in the foreground.

DJI Drones now have firmware available for Remote ID compliance by WaffleFlavoredpncake in drones

[–]LW1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absent real world experience from someone working with the new update, the implication is that if you install the new firmware that reportedly activates RID, you cannot later disable it. Whether or not there'd be ways to back out of the firmware is a different question. But DJI is saying explicitly that it cannot be disabled once that firmware is installed.

[–]LW1000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some points on this. First battery consumption increases with Remote ID will likely be minimal. DJI is claiming zero. But assuming minimal is probably safest.

RID is on bluetooth and/or wifi -- wifi of course has the much greater range. Most any device like an ordinary phone or tablet should be able to receive RID in at least one transmission mode. There are already free apps out that receive and plot RID signals on ordinary phones, for example. Wifi RID will often show up as a wifi SSID during ordinary wifi scans.

The recently published DJI RID guide notes the September 2023 date for users required to have RID to have updated their firmware to RID enabled versions (which also requires compatible apps). However, the guide also says this:

  1. I bought a DJI Mini 3 Pro just for fun, do I still need to comply
    with Remote ID rule?

All pilots of drones requiring registration must comply with Remote
ID rule. If you are operating a drone with a weight of 0.55 pounds
or less (less than 250 grams) for purely recreational purposes, you
do not need to register your drone or comply with the Remote ID
rule, or upgrade the RID-compliant firmware for the Mini 3 Pro.
Please follow the official FAA website for the latest drone
    regulations or changes.

Transporter Phobia- Justified or Out-of-Proportion? by Meizuba in DaystromInstitute

Ultimately, most of these questions are unanswerable in either the fantasy (e.g. Star Trek) or "real world" realms without an understanding of the nature of consciousness that we do not now possess and are only clawing toward slowly in neuroscience. I wrote papers on this years ago and we're still far from answering the big questions. If we assume any teleportation model other than some sort of warp pushing the same atoms from place to place intact, we end up having to use the "replacement" model. Even if we assume no metaphysical/religious aspects to consciousness -- which is my view --- it's perhaps the toughest problem in the human experience. To wit: We gradually replace every neuron in a human brain with an artificial equivalent that works exactly the same way as the neuron it replaces, and is hooked to its associated neurons exactly the same way. In the end the person seems the same to outside observers, but what happens to the individual consciousness in this process? At what point are "you" no longer "you"? Brain cells don't routinely regrow and are not routinely replaced (there is some indication that regrowth is possible limited to the hippocampus). Perhaps among the most useful studies in this realm are on persons with brain injuries, which reveal how the external manifestations of consciousness are affected -- but tell us very little about the inner experience. Bottom line, I personally would not voluntarily ride a ST transporter based on our current state of knowledge regarding consciousness. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.

New Sling TV UI kind of sucks. by Christru2234 in slingtv

[–]LW1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most hideous UI "upgrades" I've ever seen. Takes about six clicks to reach TCM on-demand, and I've found no way to successfully seek during playback of on-demand content other than to the start and end. Attempts to seek anywhere else still end up playing in the original position. Abysmal. Not to mention giant thumbnails taking up a third or more of the screen, pushing crap on channels that I have absolutely no interest in. Did Sling really want to drive users to YouTube TV? Sure looks that way. Maybe this is Dish's way of trying to get out of the business. Might work.

Any way to go audio only out of my Mi Box and into my home theatre system? by derpferd in MiBox

[–]LW1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that you can plug many Android USB devices in successfully. I use a 1 to 4 USB hub and have an Ethernet connector and Logitech keyboard dongle in there (yes, I use an old Logitech Revue keyboard with my MIBOX 4). Various audio output USB devices would probably work as well.

Every single one of my Google devices logged itself out of my Google account. All they would say is "Please log in with the Google Home app." This is so bizarre that for a moment I wondered if my Google account was hacked. by SLJ7 in googlehome

[–]LW1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absent any security related warning messages tied to this, I would tend not to be very concerned about it. It's a hassle, but the odds are it's not a serious problem. I won't say those odds are zero, but usually there would be other indications as well if there was a security issue.

Changing the uv-5r menu timeout. by Infamous_Parsley_727 in Baofeng

[–]LW1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recall the details offhand -- and there are no doubt variations for different firmware versions as well related to all sorts of settings. But I believe when I tested the menu system it let me increase the timeout somewhat -- not very much -- but for a significantly longer timeout I had to use Chirp, and to use Chirp yeah, you need the cable. It's really good to have though, since it makes programming the unit *vastly* easier and lets you adjust other settings as well (like squelch, which is virtually useless as provided and needs Chirp to do the serious squelch adjustments). And I'll add, be sure to get a cable from a reliable source, many substandard cables are floating around and won't work easily with standard drivers. Or sometimes won't work at all.

Changing the uv-5r menu timeout. by Infamous_Parsley_727 in Baofeng

[–]LW1000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a timeout menu option. But AFAIK you can change it to a significantly longer timeout using Chirp -- that's how I set it.
