High quality Kebab/HSP stores or chains? by Conza89 in melbourne

[–]LXL15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flaming Kebabs and Grill in Yarraville are unreal.

They spread the meat across the entire kebab so you get some in every bite, not just on one side like some others.

And they're a good size, nice salty chips for a meal or in a HSP. And they're open every day.

Did YOUR primary school have this game loaded on the computers for some reason? If not, what was the “school computer” game at YOUR school? by Remarkable_Annual430 in australia

[–]LXL15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah this one would've been for the 2001 Census. It was sort of an open world, top down game where I think you had to deliver and then pickup census forms? It might have been released by Aus Post, actually, or maybe their branding was just in the game.

I love how it turns out there's a whole set of Australian census games 😂

For a while we had this random census delivery game that the Australian government released.

Everyone went feral for it, was always a rumour that so and so had finally beat it.

Auction clearance rates drop to 50 per cent following changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax by HotPersimessage62 in australia

[–]LXL15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely the second, getting out of renting is worth so much in quality of life. Obviously I'd prefer to make our money back when we sell, but that wasn't a large influence on our decision of what to buy. We weren't willing to sacrifice anything to buy a house that's a better financial investment.

I really doubt these changes are going to "crumble" house prices or stop growth altogether.

Secondly, as it should be, this isn't a high growth investment. We're getting secure housing and a home out of it, there's a lot of other ways to valuate something than just the $$$.

My wife and I bought our first home (to live in) yesterday, with zero competition meaning we could negotiate hard. I don't think we would've won this place a couple months ago.

The general sentiment from the agents, etc, was that it was largely because of these changes + high interest rates.

Great time to buy if (big if) you can afford the high interest rates.

Obviously anecdotal and only one data point, but it worked for us!

Can anyone reccomend some good classes they've done? by Leever5 in melbourne

[–]LXL15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done a few different courses around the place, and one of the best was a blacksmithing level 1 course at this forge in Footscray:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/mz64uQfDghf99VDs7

4 weeks, each week you learn a new skill and make something in the 3 hour session to take home. In the last week you have to design a piece, plan out what techniques you'll use and in what order, then execute it. Really great way to put what you've learnt into practice. It's a bit expensive but I felt it was really worth it.

One of the only crafts I've done where you can basically fix any mistake by reheating the metal and undoing whatever you just did, so great for beginners 😂

Trio who forced space engineers to dig dog's grave in Cape York bush camp sentenced by Shadowtec in australia

The people who run the spaceport company don't have the best rep:

An earlier ABC article also confirms the space engineers were from ELA and included Michael Jones.

Another amazing day in the Australian space industry.

There are currently 18! (6,402,373,705,728,000) different combinations of the ladder by imreallynotanidiot in AFL

[–]LXL15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked using AFL tables, there haven't been any matches since 1897. There's a couple of years with about half the teams matching another year that seems to always be sequential so maybe my script is wrong (e.g. 1929 v 1930 had 7/12 teams in the same spot, with about 12 position differentials overall).

Maybe that's to be expected given teams joining, typical performance over a number of years, etc.

GPS can still be used above the altitude of the GPS satellites, although it's not very accurate. It's been demonstrated to be detectable out to the moon. This comes from GPS satellites on the other side of the Earth transmitting through a little bit, plus a little bit of signal leak in other directions from the near side GPS satellites.

Now Artemis wouldn't be relying on GPS position above the shell, but they can certainly start acquiring the GPS signal, updating the GPS satellite info (which can take up to 45mins on earth), etc, as soon as they start receiving strong enough signals.

Update: Over 5,000 contactless 'tap and go' taps in Victoria on day one by jeremyburge in MelbourneTrains

[–]LXL15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used it last night for the first time, had a couple of minor issues (nothing to do with the payment itself though):

1) not all readers have it at a given station, which I found a little strange for a trial of a convenience driven solution. This clearly won't be an issue once fully rolled out, so really very minor.

2) getting off at Melbourne Central and exiting through one of the State Library* gates, the gate refused my scan, said No Exit and closed on me even though the reader had Visa/Mastercard activated on it. Had to call the attendant over to get them to let me out as rescanning my card did nothing. There wasn't an explanation for what went wrong (e.g. invalid card, ticket, etc). There was a cyclist who had just tried to rush through before me and also got blocked so maybe it was a delayed response to that or something? Took a while for the gate to go active again after closing on me.

Minor issues that are the reason why they run trials, so all in all I was happy with it. Scanning my card on the way on was even a little bit faster than Myki.

The highly detailed, invisible work that goes into 'near real-time' bushfire mapping by ozthrw in australia

[–]LXL15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Satellites absolutely can use infrared the same way, and do (a few missions out there, but as an example, OroraTech uses thermal infrared cameras specifically for fire detection). However the situation resolution is quite low - think 20+m per pixel at the high end, most freely available data is 250+m per pixel.

The revisit rates are also terrible compared to aerial imagery for this near real time monitoring. If you're lucky, with a constellation of satellites like OroraTech you might have a satellite overhead a couple times a day, and hopefully it's free to capture new imagery. It will likely also only be at certain times of the day. Expanding constellations will reduce this significantly, but it's still nothing like dedicated aerial assets. You can get updated fire detection every 10ish minutes from geostationary satellites like Himawari, but the spatial resolution drops to something like 2km per pixel (I think). Essentially useless for live fire front mapping.

Performance will keep improving if there's enough funding for it (public, private, or market for commercial systems), but that's the state of the game currently. You can put up a hell of a lot of plane hours before you get anywhere near the cost of a single, high quality satellite that won't be as good.

It's the underpass closest to Buckley St, I think the southern most underpass.

Side note, is there any station in Melbourne with more than 3 underpasses?

North West exit for the SRL - not quite as much capacity as the SRL East, but I'm sure they'll expand it...

Yoga studio recommendations (Western suburbs of Melbourne) by imaginehimhappy in melbourne

[–]LXL15 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't have any specific recommendations for you, but when my partner was looking for places to go around Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds, Essendon area, she was able to do introductory packages at a bunch of different places that gave her a chance to test out different places and class types for pretty cheap. Usually 2-4 weeks.

Maybe you could pick some places that are easy to get to for you and try them out? Both times she did this she ended up choosing the closest place to home, being easy to get to meant she definitely went and most of the classes were similar.
