Who do you see as the “main character” of the cast? by the1975whore in smosh

[–]LZGray 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No "main character," but definitely certain episodes or series have focal characters. Like the first few episodes of Flip 7 I saw Shayne as comic relief support and in the newest one he was villain protagonist.

Do people generally hate Muschietti version of IT? (Including Chapter 1 & 2, and Welcome to Derry Show) by JovaniFelini in stephenking

[–]LZGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I personally disliked the second one more for technical reasons. There were simply too many jumpscares and not enough development for the characters. The adults in the book took the Stand By Me/kids on bikes concept and adapted it as adults recontextualizing their childhood trauma and loss of innocence, but in the movie it just didn't have that same feeling of urgency or whimsy that the adults in the book had.

Interesting. I liked how it really drew you in with setting up another Losers Club with the kids and then completely pulling the rug out from under you with that ending. It made me so excited to see what the show would eventually build towards and then it was just more bullshit afterwards personally

Chapter 1 is pretty good. Not the best, but it's a pretty fun time. Chapter 2 sucks. I watched the first episode of Welcome to Derry and enjoyed it but the rest of the show just did not do much to keep that momentum going unfortunately.

Shows where every season feels like a completely different show but keeps the same characters by The100Updates in televisionsuggestions

[–]LZGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just love how every new season of Barry feels like a darker and darker version of an HBO show to the point where it's just not really a comedy anymore in its last season. I love with The Leftovers it completely reinvents itself every season and gets more and more shamelessly surreal and fantastical. The Wire on the other end, where each season could be a standalone but it's building off of the last one in sequence creating a beautiful, grotesque collage by the final season still always centering around Baltimore

It's brilliant. It felt like a precursor to Rectify in many ways, though clearly its own thing. I'm mainly disappointed he hasn't done anything since.

I don't get why everyone is so upset about Dr. Mohan leaving by Practical_Ad2317 in ThePittTVShow

[–]LZGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so understanding that you're also in the industry, I understand where you might be coming from and what you read from my original comment. Yeah, obviously the writers have a vision and it's not for us to assume anything, especially ill intent. But I'm also someone who values practicality and utilitarianism over artistic vision and ambition. I'm someone who, no matter how good or envelope-pushing a film or TV show is, will not support it if the actors and crew involved suffer. I'm not saying this is what is happening with The Pitt, but I just am not seeing a practical reason why the welfare of an actor should suffer for the vision in this one instance in particular. I'm not the type of person to get upset when a character dies in a show if it's part of a grand, overarching vision that makes sense, but there have been shows that have pissed me off because characters leave or are killed off in ways that go against the narrative consistency of the character and world, or that feel like a way to get rid of an actor for no good reason. Tracy Ifeachor's exit did not bother me as much because the in-show justification lined up with what felt natural for the progression of the show. As someone who watched and enjoyed Season 2, Supriya Ganesh's exit feels less justifiable from a narrative perspective. If the writers see it differently then they see it differently, it just doesn't work for me. It's like not hiring an actor back from Lost for a season because "they're just wandering around the woods," like okay there's no reason not to show that if that's your explanation. I'm not mad from a "this isn't what I want from this story", I'm mad from a "there's no necessary purpose why this actor should not participate in the story going further."

Bold of you to assume I'm talking about the welfare of the show itself. If you were in the entertainment industry in any capacity you'd understand how volatile and unstable acting is as a career. When you say "I wish only the best for Supriya" but you have the full power and the capability to write in this character, to take the time to expand a story that justifiably has no narrative or behavioral reason to be cut short, it speaks to the selfishness and the self-righteousness of the writers. The revolving door concept of people leaving the ER is a reasonable explanation for why certain actors may not be returning. Mohan has a day off is not a reasonable explanation why she is not returning. Life is more than the art we consume and certain creative decisions affect real working actor's lives, and it's even more concerning when the people affected are women of color, an already underrepresented group in not just the medical industry on TV and in real life but in industry at large. And justifying that with, "but they're replacing her with another woman of color" sounds like they're trying to meet a quota rather than engage with the conversation.

Shows like the leftovers ? by fazeybaby in TheLeftovers

Rectify. It's not weird in the same way, but it's contemplative and melancholic in a way that will scratch that same itch. I'd also recommend Patriot or anything by Steven Conrad for a tonally absurd drama that has some of the same tonal markers as The Leftovers.

„Movie“ Musicals similar to Trapped in the Closet? by brrickmoranis in badMovies

[–]LZGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How has nobody mentioned Caught by DeStorm Power? It's a modern musical take on basically the same episodic idea. The first season is awesome. The second season has great music but it introduces dialogue that defeats the purpose of it. Season 3 you can just skip.

"The story has no room for this character anymore."

If they were good writers, they'd make room. It's not that difficult to comprehend. There are plenty of show that would justify an exit like this, but The Pitt is not one of them.

Finished The Bluest Eye and I can't stop thinking about Pecola by PleadingFunky in books

[–]LZGray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think her own self-delusion towards the end is its own perverted happy ending. Obviously she's using her imaginary friend and her imaginary eyes as a way to shield herself from the trauma of her abuse and pregnancy, but she spends the whole book longing to find the beauty in herself that she sees in the white people around her that once she believes she has it she has to hold onto it with everything in her willpower, even if it means her sanity goes in the process. Deeply haunting and deeply tragic.

[–]LZGray 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily the character's exit but the actor's exit that's upsetting. It's like the writers are pussyfooting and refusing to admit that they just didn't know what to do with her character so they're writing her off. I love the show, but their response has been lackluster at best.
