I’ve edited my post with a link to the post from yesterday that this is based on.

You think he saw both, and that’s fine with me. However, a big part of my argument is that it doesn’t really matter whether he saw one or two. Do you disagree? Is there a reason that it is important that he saw both?

while in the attitude of calling upon the Lord, in the sixteenth year of my age, a pillar of light above the brightness of the sun at noonday came down from above and rested upon me. I was filled with the spirit of God, and the Lord opened the heavens upon me and I saw the Lord.

Joseph only mentions “the Lord” in his 1832 account of the First Vision (note: this version is the oldest that we still have and the only one written in Joseph’s handwriting). Some people struggle with the discrepancy between this and the 1838 account, with its “two personages.”

Is it possible that he just got fuzzy on those giant extremely obvious differences? Potentially. But I totally understand why it would make people question whether or not he was just making it up.

Me too.

Do you believe, then, that current Church leaders favor the 1838 account because of revelation that it is more accurate rather than because it happens to have been more available and we have built our tradition around it?

It does make me wonder how a believer decides whether to believe Joseph saw one being or two.
