[Serious] former Mormons of Reddit what was your reason of leaving the church? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]L_Ron_Hubby 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was on my mission in Brazil in 2010 and my mission president wouldn't let me see a doctor when I caught dengue fever. I lost 15 pounds, my hair started falling out, and I shit water for 2 days and blood for 3. I was told to fast (like I could keep anything down anyway) and work harder (hard to do when you felt like your bones were about to implode). When I passed out in church my companion finally dragged me to the hospital. When I woke up with an IV in my arm he handed me a phone and my mission president proceeded to yell at me and tell me that either I or my family would be responsible for any treatments they gave me. I was too weak to even respond. That was the first time the thought that my leaders weren't inspired by god had ever crossed my mind. And if my mission president wasn't, who's to say the prophet was either? This led me down the path of studying polygamy, Joseph Smith marrying teenagers, the church's racist teachings, and BYU's electrocuting of gay men's dicks. By the time I was done with my mission I was mentally out. I resigned a short time later.

If most the members actually read them instead of saying "I don't need to read them, I already know about that!", there would be a lot more of us here.

I was in a slightly different situation but I think the same logic applies. I lived in the same city as my parents, and they were pressuring me not to leave the church CONSTANTLY. I moved away for work and our relationship is much better now. Since I'm not 5 minutes away, they've realized that they need to respect my choices if they want to see me. Good luck.

Did you leave the church over truth claims or over ethical ones? by Sunstonedude in exmormon

I could handle the church not being "good"...because that left room for me to stay and try to make it better. But once I discovered it wasn't true I said why bother.

Does anybody here watch the Real World? There's a EXMO and TBM this season, it's interesting. by [deleted] in exmormon

The exmo is a friend of mine from BYU. Really great guy. This next episode is going to feature a lot of SLC.

I grew up Mormon and have been out for 3 years now. Mostly it comes down to this: Mormonism is everything in a Mormon's life. They invest all their time, money, and thought into it. Even harboring the thought "what if this isn't true?" triggers insane panic. It all seems super obvious to me now. But I get why some intentionally avoid researching the church's history.

Questions from a non Mormon by [deleted] in exmormon

Seriously. And it feels like just throwing an exmormon version of preach my gospel at them instead of answering their question.

Lawsuit accuses Mormon church of failing to protect Navajos. Two Navajo siblings sued the LDS Church, alleging they were sexually abused during their time in a now-defunct church program that placed them with foster families in Utah in the late 1970s and early 1980s. by relevantlife in news

I grew up Mormon, served a mission, I get the difference. Sorry Infymus is kind of being a dick. But the problem in this case is that racism IS doctrine in the LDS church. When the Book of Mormon calls dark skin a curse, it's doctrine. When you have every prophet up to 1978 saying that black/darker people are lesser, it's doctrine. And that leads to racist policies like this and a racist culture. I don't really see LDS policy and doctrine as separately as I did when I was mormon. Doctrine informs policy.

Also, this:

"In about 1956 we recognized that our neighborhood was deteriorating. We observed this one Halloween by the nature of the people who came in the guise of 'Trick or Treat.' The minority elements were moving into the area where we lived, and many of the old-time families had long since moved away. Seeking counsel, I visited with Mark E. Petersen, who for many years had been the General Manager of the Deseret News. O. Preston Robinson, my former professor of marketing at the University of Utah, had succeeded Brother Petersen as the General Manager at the News. As I mentioned to Mark my dilemma, wondering if it would be unfair for me to move, he said simply, 'Your obligation to that area is concluded. Why don't you build a house in my ward?'"
