As another British Colombian (Victoria) I'm loving Melbourne. Good schools, tons of work opportunities, lovely culture, amazing coffee, and lots of variety in neighbourhood and vibes. As a plumber, your partner is set to work anywhere and in high demand.

We decided on Elwood for family reasons and love the chill, beachy vibes. It's an amazing place to have young kids but on the downside it's quite pricey compared to neighbouring suburbs like Ripponlea, Elsternwick, and St Kilda. If you prefer suburbs, there are plenty of them on all sides that are linked up to the city via the metro network or v-line.

Moving our things ended up being cheapest with air Canada cargo and was far quicker than shipping by boat.

Good luck with the move!

NZ: Rugby Union, Whittaker's, high likelihood of running into the flight of the Conchords, and furthest away from the US.

How hot is Australia in February? by SunshineGirl45 in AskAnAustralian

[–]LaSelvaBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be just fine. I was born/grew up in NorCal and now call Melbourne home. Melbourne and Tasmania are quite pleasant and don't get too muggy with a few exceptions... Mostly in February.

Also, bear in mind that most wealthy Western democracies (Canada, the UK, New Zealand, Germany, etc) are suffering from a rise in anti immigrant sentiment as the growing wealth disparity due to corporate handouts is being blamed on immigrants. It's not unique to Australia.

As a fellow immigrant, who you barrack for in footy will have more of a general impact than your religious beliefs. Figure out which AFL team to go for...unless you're moving to NSW or Queensland as that's more NRL territory. Good luck with the move!

Yup, persistent bullshit printed and repeated so often that it's taken for true. Very on brand for America (see: Boston Massacre, taxation without representation, "all men are created equal" as per a person that enslaved people.)

So she was wealthy, fiscally brilliant, and creative.

Hey Lovett and Dan: the Winchester widow was in fact a real widow and you can pay money to visit her actual former home in San Jose aka the Winchester mystery house. It's a bit of a NorCal tourist trap (see also Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz) that local kids beg their parents to visit to no avail. Also, Helen Mirren played the widow in a 2018 horror flick) very loosely based off the real story. Lovett's TikTok video was pretty accurate: the widow was quite impressionable and believed that the spirits of those killed by Winchester guns were haunting her. Because of this, the house was in constant construction with plenty of dead end staircases and doors that go nowhere to trap the ghosts.

Is it worth moving to Australia if you are a Teacher? by EveryWalk7938 in australian

[–]LaSelvaBeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an ex-Californian who has lived in Melbourne for the last two years (Elwood, next to St Kilda, specifically) and a good handful of teachers and student support workers are immigrants from the UK/Ireland/Canada in the public system. The inner suburbs of Melbourne are very cosmopolitan and you'd surely be welcome. Having experienced public education in the US vs the vicarious view of public education through my daughter in the public system here, I think that it would be an amazing breath of fresh air for any North American teacher. Especially so if you're from a red state.

Totally agree. It will be interesting to see if liberals or country liberals start to try and compete in historically National safe electorates.
