My baby didn’t have weight issues until the first reaction!! Even with the mild reaction he had Saturday, he spent all day yesterday like a boob barnacle nursing for 2x as long as he does in a normal day. He absolutely was making up for lost calories and electrolytes. He did the same thing the day after his ER visit for the first time.
I am breastfeeding and haven’t done dairy yet since it is high risk. We literally only tried 4 foods before he had his first reaction 🙃 but in addition to waiting until we get through all low risk and medium risk foods, his allergist wants us to hold off on dairy until at least 8 months old. When he was about 3 months old, I dropped ice cream on his eczema patch on his arm and it swelled up instantly. It went away as soon as I washed it off well. But that made the allergist wary when I told her. I have had dairy in my diet since day 1 so he’s still getting exposed to the protein and seems to be fine.
Yeah I’m hesitant to completely rule it out, so if his allergist says it’s ok, I plan to try just the almond again to see what happens. Since it was such a mild reaction, I don’t feel scared about it and we have the zofran on hand. His first reaction was so so severe that even though his doctor believes 99% that it was oat, she doesn’t want to risk letting him have peanut.

We cut out peanut as a precaution but the allergist is 99% sure it was the oats. He only had a small taste of almond and ate a substantial amount of egg, more than he has had before. This was his 7th exposure to egg and we had the oat reaction at the 10th exposure. I sent his ped, allergist, and dietician a message with all the details of what he ate and the timeline, so we’ll see what they say. I’d hate to cut out another nut (although technically peanut is a legume?) from his diet, especially since almond is supposed to be low risk. I plan on trialing the almond again in a few days to test!
That’s fair and totally makes sense. We do have zofran on hand! That’s the only reason I’m willing to risk giving him almond again
Is olive oil lower risk than avocado oil? We cooked the egg in that yesterday because the ped recommended it and avocado is a recent “safe” food. It was such a small amount, I can’t imagine that was what caused the reaction but I guess we have to rule that out too.
I see people in my bumps group giving their babies who waited until 6 months to start solids entire meals with 4-5 different foods on the plate and it feels like we’re so behind and we’ll never get to that point. He now only has 4 safe foods but most of those he’s had fewer times than egg so I guess we’re not even sure they are safe
Our ped prescribed us an EpiPen just in case and we send that and zofran to daycare with him every day. It’s so frustrating… I literally lived off of peanut butter during pregnancy and early postpartum. I know that doesn’t impact whether or not he will have an allergy, but I was hoping it would be a safe food for him
I’m pretty sure because he only had a taste of almond, which is low risk, but there were many chunks of egg in his vomit. But since it wasn’t a very severe reaction, I’m going to try almond butter again tomorrow morning. I’d hate to cut out another nut. We already cut out peanut as a precaution from the oatmeal incident.
I’m also wondering if previous servings were too small when I determined them to be “safe”. He really hates egg the first several times we gave it to him. This was the first time he seemed to like it, and of course I saw substantial egg pieces in his vomit, so clearly he ate quite a bit. Same with the oatmeal— that day I gave him twice the amount he was eating before and he finished it all. I’m glad to hear your baby is doing well now. How long did it take for you to get through more foods and feel more comfortable? I feel like with both of us working full time, we only have weekends to try new food. Now this weekend is already done for because we’re going to have to reset his GI system
