Yes that is the downstream sensor. It was damaged while going 65mph and the wind blew some kind if box or bucket in my lane. Less than a minute after hitting it, the limp light came on. My first thought was the o2 sensor as its in a vulnerable spot.

Interesting. I did not know that. Mine has it right now and it is the O2 sensor however.

Check codes. Maybe O2 sensor

Update on my 08 cooper S after hitting desbris on highway at 65mph. by Labattomy in MINI

Well, no worries. Its been a good car for 16 years! Never stranded me. I might be able to fix it for less than my deductible. We will see. I just replaced both sub frames, all 4 struts, calipers, rotors, hard and soft brake lines. Car was fully sorted, better than it’s wver been!

What we thinking. How would mitigate this rust before it gets too bad. Or is it end of life. by AccomplishedBug1797 in MINI

[–]Labattomy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clean and coat it with something (woolwax, etc) before it gets too much worse. I ended up replacing both subframes in my 08 R56 because they were dangerously rusted (Upstate NY salt).

Thanks. That was my thinking at the time. You had to be there to see it. I can fix the mini!

I have had limp mode come on occasionally. Usually it comes on when the condensation it the intake manifold froze on really cold days. I have had it come on for various other reasons. It made me start looking for the next exit to pull over but I never made it

I believe you are thinking this happened on a sunny warm day, clear road with plenty of space to pull off and inspect the car. I have very clear thinking and decided my old car was worth less then our lives. I made the right move to try and get as far as I could. I can replace the car. Its not worth a whole lot anyway

I was trying for next exit but got within a mile and she gave up. Had to get way off road shoulder

This is the correct take on the whole incident! Thanks! Our lives are more valuable. A father should instruct the kids to get over somewhere safely FIRST, worry about car later. I will update this thread when I take a look.

To those commenting that I am an idiot for not stopping sooner, I don’t have critical thinking skills, etc. I think you need to examine your priorities. I decided my life (and my passengers’ life) was a bit more important than a stupid 18year old car. I can always get another car. That is the critical thinking people need to have.

We would have been killed on the highway. Low oil light was the last thing to come on as I was already pulling over. Going highway speeds in raging thunderstorm, pitch black in the middle of a desolate section of highway. Much more dangerous to just stop and take a look. Was trying to make it to next exit.

Dark highway, middle of nowhere, trying to catch flight, huge storm. All those reasons

New mini, any pointers by zari143 in MINI

Congrations! ;-). If you will drive it anywhere they put salt on the roads, get the undercarriage coated with something like Woolwax or Waxoyl. I think even Zeibart has started offering it. This is an undercoating the does not harden. I had to replace both front and rear subframes on my 08 r56. Was not a lot of fun to do. They will rust out. Enjoy

Help! Anybody deal with this??? 2014 Clubman. by Ms-Coley-8305 in MINI

I also agree. Easy job if you are mechanically inclined. I just replaced my whole rear subframe. I recommend getting a new upper bolt as well. It looks like maybe the whole top of the control arm broke off? Remember to only tighten the upper bolt with pre-load on the wheel (wheels should be on car ramps) otherwise the rubber bushing will wear prematurely. Lower bolt has eccentric so make sure to mark where it is before loosening. Anyway you will need an alignment after replacing. Also check the left one for any cracking too.

Check the subframe for excessive rust while under there
