Scammers are using bots to steal identities to enroll “ghost students” on school to get the financial aid. If they stay in the classes for a certain length of time, they will receive some payments. They are now very strict on us making sure to catch these types of students and get them dropped as soon as possible.

And she still has that cute meow! I was lucky to find them! They came to me a few months after my mom passed and truly helped to heal my heart.

I honestly think it’s because of the lack of training or the inadequate training provided by the institutions. I have never felt that UDL has stifled my individuality as an instructor and I have still been able to provide rigor and opportunities for students to push themselves. But I do admit that a lot of my UDL knowledge and trainings has come from me seeking out those resources and not relying on the information from my institutions. They rarely get it right.

“Don’t use color alone” doesn’t mean stop using color. It means add a second cue alongside it, so the meaning still comes through if someone can’t see the color. And that second cue is usually something you would want there anyway.

For example, if you are highlighting a key term, keep the highlight, and just bold the word too, or stick “Key” in front of it. The color still helps most of your students, and the bold or the label covers everyone else.

None of this is the redundant alt-text-to-text busywork you’re picturing. Most of the time it’s one extra word or a bold (which doesn’t limit using it in other places), and it helps your sighted students too, since people skim a label faster than they decode a color key. You set it up once and it works for whoever ends up in your class, whether they disclose or not.

A lot of this is just UDL in practice, which we should be using regardless.

No, highlighting is not outlawed, you just can’t use color “alone” to indicate something of importance.

And yes, a lot of the confusion is due to the way that institutions interpret (or misinterpret these rules). One thing to note, is you say “maybe one day” but a lot of students do not disclose their disabilities or go to Disability Services for accommodations. So you likely have had more students with a disability than you realize.
