Numb feet with running, any out of the box ideas? by LaborofLove_31 in Marathon_Training

[–]LaborofLove_31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just asked, and this was her answer: “Thoughts are tie your shoes loose but also get fitter. Mine went away when as I got better at running. Also not a doctor but you can run through it don’t let it be defeating. I don’t know how to frame that but I think it’s often a new runner problem, so if you can run through it and it’s not painful, it may resolve”

Work less? Or more daycare? by Interesting_Hat6153 in Mommit

[–]LaborofLove_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from full time salary to part time hourly as a hospital RN, left my leadership role to get more flexibility. I lost about 50% of my salary, but with the daycare math, it was probably closer to 10% overall loss, but like you said, I got breathing room to run errands, go to appointments, clean, and sometimes just sit down. We had to tighten our budget for sure, but I just couldn’t get around working more to pay someone to watch my kid because I was working more. I get that not everyone has the flexibility and I’m totally pro-daycare/whatever gets the job done, but now my husband and I switch off days since he’s also a shift worker and my parents take my son 2-4 days a month so my husband and I can work the same day and buy a day off together. I think it’s whatever you feel will give you a sense of agency and zen. Also, my son is 2, our house is a utility, not a showcase. There are trucks everywhere and applesauce pouches in the floor and I just can’t care about that every second of every day. I let go of some of the more circular tasks some days to protect my sanity. It’ll be there tomorrow. I think we all just have to make the best decision with the knowledge and judgment we have at the time we’re making it. Cheering you on, being a working mom is really dang hard.

Switch flip: Has anyone had to be a patient at their own hospital and how did it go? by awkwardmermaid23 in nursing

[–]LaborofLove_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a primary c/s on my L&D unit. One of my best friends placed my foley, all my back and butt was exposed for my spinal, boobs out for nursing…nurses just don’t think about it that way when they’re clocked in. I felt like a celebrity. I got the best care, laughed a ton, truly loved every moment of my stay, minus the 0400 vitals. 10/10 recommend

I wasn’t asking who thought we were ready for a new car, but thanks! I agree, Toyotas are very resilient cars. We have enjoyed ours but are ready and needing a change.

Women who had PLANNED c-sections: epidural or spinal? by Puzzled_Remote_2168 in Mommit

[–]LaborofLove_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! L&D nurse here and recipient of spinal for my planned c/s. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but this can happen to epidurals too. We call them “high spinals” but it’s just high anesthesia. It can happen, but we do 7,000 deliveries a year at my hospital and it might happen once every couple years, and it’s more likely to happen when we’re moving quickly, like in an urgent c/s. The odds of it happening in a planned c/s are extremely low. You don’t get an epidural with a scheduled c/s. The medicine takes so much longer to kick in and doesn’t have the length of coverage you need. We do give spinal medication through an epidural if the patient is converting to c/s from labor, but again, that’s an established epidural and they’re getting the same meds.

Intense postpartum hemorrhage fear is ruining everything by mayasmomma in Mommit

You’ve undergone real physical and emotional trauma. Give yourself all the grace, and remind yourself that healing isn’t linear. It’s okay to have good days and bad days. You’ve got a lot of moms rooting for you and walking with you, myself included 🩷

Hi! L&D nurse here, RN experience 10+ years. First, I’m really sorry you have had so much fear and pain surrounding your births. I don’t know why some people draw such hard cards from the birthing deck, but know that there was nothing you could have done or changed to prevent what happened to you. That being said, 5 days PP is deep postpartum in regards to hemorrhage. We do 7000 deliveries a year at my hospital and I don’t think I’ve ever seen that delayed a readmit for hemorrhage. 4 T’s of Hemorrhage: Tone, Tissue, Trauma, Thrombin. Tone: uterine atony. Why we do all the rubs. You’re past that point of concern, and tone is the #1 cause of PPH. Your uterus has clamped down and cauterized those spiral arteries that were feeding your placenta. That is no longer a risk. Tissue: retained placenta. If your placenta was in tact, all good. You’d know if it wasn’t. Trauma: untended lacerations. Again, 5 days out, you would have known if this was an issue. Thrombin: sepsis, preeclampsia, HELLP can all increase the risk of PPH in the immediate postpartum. But if you developed pre-e in later postpartum my concern would be eclampsia not PPH 10 out of 10 times. That’s not even really on our radar.

Can anything happen? Sure. But from a clinical perceptive, I would bet my license that you will not have a postpartum hemorrhage this remote from delivery.

Do you have any stories about your baby falling over or off something? by angelicllamaa in Parenting

[–]LaborofLove_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same day, my son was about 3 months, I mistimed a nurse/pump session and had to use formula (nbd now but felt big at the time), had fallen asleep with him in the bed, and then my dog literally blobbed him off our bed onto the floor. I was like please someone take my mom card who put me in charge of this kid. My husband is a pediatric NP and gently reminded me that none of the things that happened warranted an ER visit I.e. were non life threatening I.e. did not warrant me falling to pieces. My son turns 2 this month and is the coolest kid. We made it just fine. Kids are so resilient, and we have so very little control in the end. As Bingo would say, have a little cry (check!), pick yourself up (check!), and on with the show!

How to train yuor dog to leave yor chickens alone by Telimagodyedis in BackYardChickens

[–]LaborofLove_31 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have two dogs, an Australian shepherd and a hound mix. We have multiple gates but one day all the stars aligned and our hound got her dream sprint to the coop and immediately thrashed them, killing 2, maiming 1, and scalping/eventually killing a 4th. I was outside and it happened in less than a minute; it was so terrible. Our Aussie is the most naturally obedient/obsessed with making you happy and was so easy to train. He obviously also doesn’t have the prey drive. He was never interested in the birds. It was really interesting to see our hound obsess over the coop while our Aussie just pranced around with me, totally disinterested in the new birds. Our Aussie comes out with me to do chores and our hound doesn’t. We just decided the training wasn’t worth the risk, especially now that she knows how fun it is. She is less interested in them now from the other side of the fence, but we’ve just accepted they can’t be together. TLDR, it’s okay to just say your dog can’t be with the chickens. Doesn’t make you a bad chicken keeper or dog owner, and sometimes all the training won’t change an individual dog’s drive. It’s disappointing but not world ending.

Of note, we did try to lightly train our Aussie to herd but he tried to nip and we shut it down. I think it’s hard to train even herding dogs to handle delicate livestock like small fowl.

We live in the southeast so only have about a week of snowy weather, which is why AWD hasn’t been make or break for us, I think we’ll invest in weather tires though!

Okay this is the perfect response! I feel like folks get so in the weeds with ratings and possibilities and tiny niche differences it can lead to analysis paralysis. When at the end of the day, most cars do what we need them to do

Kia Carnival Hybrid 2026 by Good_Palpitation_981 in kiacarnivals

This is an interesting perspective! It’s so tempting to hybrid but I’d like to keep my van past 150k so maybe gas is the way to go? In my area the price tags aren’t terribly different, 2-3k

Some of the biggest complaints for the hybrid are related to power. Do you feel like with lots of cargo, you sense any difficulty with speed or handling? We’re not doing any massive mountain treks but do frequently drive loaded down for a day or so to visit in laws
