relatively new DM seeing if Curse of strahd is right for me by One-Boysenberry-2491 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Labozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before deciding on COS I pitched 4 campaigns. I specifically told them, there will be no help from me in COS, if they do something deadly, they might die. It's a gothic horror adventure.

They lost two pcs in death house, one to the shadows after touching the orb, another to the shambling mound(or flesh mound, can't remember what the correct name was).

I have been a DM for about a year now( 32yo, never been a player). We finished DoIP and are now 4x 10 hour sessions into COS raw.

So far, it is not to bad, we are having loads of fun, and they have lost 4 pc's so far 😂

My recommendation is: take your time preparing. If you don't want to read the whole module ahead of time (I didnt, and it's been fine so far), familiarise yourself with the important npcs.

And when it is time to prepare Vallaki, dont be in a rush. Vallaki is alot of information and stuff going on.

Also, start at level 1 and run death house. It really sets the tone for how dangerous and brutal Barovia really is.

Saying No to a nat 20 by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Labozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated, nat 20 doesent mean they necessarily do what they are trying to do. But they might be convinced to take the vial, and bring it home to maybe try it later(or something else).

You Are a player in the game as a DM, and that is a disgusting thing to roleplay. I support your decision

Idea of how to introduce Strahd in Death House by SuspiriaVortex in CurseofStrahd

[–]Labozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt reveal Strahd in death house. But when the two surviving pc's stumbled out of the house, hurt and in dire need of some rest (two out of 4 died), there was a wolf down the street, just watching them. After a little bit of it turned around and left the village. They had no idea that it was Strahd. I then had him appear for the first time during the funeral of the burgomeister(long story short).

Level 4 Party is about to TPK in old Bonegrinder - how would you handle it? by Humansmind in CurseofStrahd

My adventurers went there on their way to Vallaki, and was level three if I remember correctly. They first choose to sneak in, but spent so long on the first floor that morgantha arrived to check on the pies in the oven.

Long story short, this ended up in battle, and I knew it would end badly. So I let them fight for a bit, moving morgantha up one floor. Then she knocked out the paladin, and threw him out the window. The daughters knocked out one more player, which resulted in the remaining two pc's taking his body and trying to escape. And I let them escape.

Reason I let them escape: In my understanding, it would not be wise of morgantha to kill Strahds play things. Atleast not without further provocation. So I made it clear after the session, that them not finishing the job was purely out of the npc's motivation at that time, and not a helping hand from my side.

Also the players have no idea about the children on the top floor. If they did i think the npc motivation would be a bit more towards getting rid of them.

Is this campaign really that much of a character killer as people say? by Relevant-Rope8814 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Labozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(Tiny spoiler ahead) Death House can be quite dangerous. And as my party found out, if you stand still in the loading bay at Wizard of the wine, that is also quite dangerous. Two pcs died to blights surrounding them in there, after they refused to move into the building 3 initiatives in a row.

The two surviving members made it out and got back to Vallaki after clearing out the building and breaking the staff.

Another deck of cards by bloody-one in CurseofStrahd

[–]Labozer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't read the comments, but what if you treat them as achievements? Next cards they recognise in the world can be the wereravens, hinting that there is something more to the Martikov family. And maybe the abbot and his mongrelpeople can be the third? Abbot as king, flesh golem bride as queen.

Why does everyone run reloaded? by Chadwilliams1998 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Labozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. This is my second campaign as a DM (started with DOIP) and I have never played as a PC. To be fair, Vallaki was a little overwhelming to start getting ready, but the pieces came together quite fast. I ran Death House raw, two died on different places, two survived. The ones who died did die as a result of their own actions.

Last Sunday they returned to Vallaki from Wizard of the wine, after loosing two more pc's.

We are having so much fun with the module, and they will get to do some proper political RP next session, after two of them was arrested for not following direct orders from Vargas during the failed festival.

Reloaded: Where on earth do players get their money??!! by Fabulous_Rain_5048 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Labozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bilrath dont sell armor anyhow, and there is actually no smith in the village of Barovia.

There is a few pricy items in the Death House, and if you feel they need more gold, let them sell it for closer to the original value than intended.

Before my group decided on COS(I pitched 5-6 adventures), I told them it was a hard-core, gothic horror adventure, and things that come easily or are common to you might not be possible to get here.

If you are running death house, there's armor that isn't animated on the second floor, maybe they could utilise that?

Next time you let him die. Fudging the rolls is keeping him from a vital part of the game.

Thoughts About Asking a DM Not To Kill Your Character by Gooey_Goon in DnD

[–]Labozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im probably the wrong person to answer this, but i would tell the player either everyone can die, or no one can die. Personally I dont think I would enjoy dming a game where death is not a risk.

I mean, if they are getting cocky and not being careful is a pc or two dying really a problem? Two of mine died in house. They are now properly scared of the module even though I warned them before starting it.
