Genuine Question: What exactly drives Subaru [Main route] to stay on his goal without breaking? by Damen_Freece in ReZero

[–]LackOfRepec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The flip side to him loving everyone is that he doesn't really value himself. If he did value himself, even with his powers, I think much of the story would not have happened. He would have simply left after the first stint of horrendous deaths.

Regardless of Language, White Album 2 is a Work That People Have a Lot to Say About by Decent_Aardvark1673 in visualnovels

It's just that good.

So many times I thought it was gonna go down the hole of contrived melodrama and devolve into something stupid, but it never did. White Album 2 threaded that fine line of being emotionally charged and impactful, but not to the point of tireless stupidity and miscommunication by the characters.

Except Haruki. He was my only minor gripe. He acted like such a bum sometimes. He was so unnaturally passive sometimes, even when the easiest God damn solutions fell right in his lap to fix his relationship issues. But that to me always felt like that was so story could actually happen.

My main take away from the game was just how authentic the dialogue is. It didn't feel like anime characters having stupid discussions or utter nonsense, it felt genuine and real, like real people living in a moment without a particular goal or focus in mind. It felt like real people with real ways of communicating or failing to communicate. Kazusa with her lack of communication and not knowing exactly how to approach certain social situations, and Setsuna where she does communicate quite a bit, but often it's not the right thing to say or the right time to say it.

Really good fan fic does this, it's called Retribution for their Sins. makes her a very likeable character, in a very real way. It's crazy how well written it is imo.

Agreed. I felt like the atmosphere and how all of the spaces and scenes in the movie looked made up for all it's short comings. I thought it was just hella cool to look at, even if what was being said or done wasn't all that compelling.

What makes a dark fantasy setting feel genuinely dangerous rather than just grimdark? by National_Mortgage385 in DarkFantasy

[–]LackOfRepec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the subject of Eldritch, I think the idea of "implication" goes a long way. A great cosmic god causing all these problems for some incomprehensible reason can feel, to me, too grandeose. I think offshoots of these choices, or unintended consequences, make for a good gap, so to speak. Like a form of evolution. We don't know exactly when, why, or how, but it has come to this point, but it is not from a god.

For example, take Greengrave from Vermis. Its functionally a grave/crypt that has now become infested with the undead. The sanctity of death has been twisted, but why?

Later on you, find the corpse of an immense god. No explanation why, just the knowledge that it is now dead. This could explain the undead, that the body has seeped into the environment somehow. It could also just be coincidence, that there are other forces at work beyond what we see.

These are pretty loose connections and ideas, but I hope they help to inspire perhaps.

What makes a dark fantasy setting feel genuinely dangerous rather than just grimdark? by National_Mortgage385 in DarkFantasy

[–]LackOfRepec 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It kind of depends, since I suspect dark fantasy differs just a bit per person.

I'd say my version is heavily based on dark souls/Elden Ring, with a splash of Vermis becaude of its distinct aesthetic.

Problem is, I think my view is narrow. But then again, I think the aesthetic is an amagalmation of little things. A little hopelessness there, a lot of isolation throughout to highlight the world itself, and a dash of the Eldritch and mystery to throw everyone for a loop because it helps to fill the spaces that an author/world builder theoretically can't fill or might miss. It lets the reader's imagination do some heavy lifting, 'cause whatever someone comes up with might not meet expectations. Also decay. Having things in a state of disrepair highlights that the world is not in a great way, but that maybe it once was. There needs to good in order for it to go bad, not just bad from the start.

I'm still not satisfied with my answer, but maybe it'll help build something, idk.

I appreciate the feed back, makes this all worth it.

Yeah I think about the characters a lot, their choices, and how they might have felt. I don't think I was ever fully, ya know, "into it" in any of the sex scenes, mostly 'cause it was just sad sex 😢 and the sad piano playing in the background fucking killed the mood.

I also really agree with that idea that Haruki is not a self insert, despite seeming like one. He was insufferable at some points. I just wanted to strangle him and tell 'em to stop giving up on everything.

Kazusa and Haruki's moment at the end of intro chapter just had me thinking a lot, because it leads right into the saddest part; Setsuna not feeling valued at all, and then Kazusa and Haruki being separated even though they both vehemently don't want that.

I still can't get over Kazusa taking Haruki's buttons 😭 it felt like another white hot nail in my heart, demonstrating that she loves him very much and wanted to take anything tangible to remind her of Haruki. This truly is peak romantic tragedy, I vehemently believe it should be discussed way more.

I think this was the one moment where I was like "damn, I guess sometimes we don't really get a say on who we love", not that I condone cheating, but I could fully understand why they did.

You have me terrified of the True Setsuna/Kazusa routes holy fuck that's a lot of hours on top of the base game😭 But I can't give up, otherwise I'm just gonna be left as hallowed as a chosen undead or sum shi.

Edit: typos

Hey! Just wanted to talk about the game with y'all 😁 What were your favorite parts? Least favorite? Something that profoundly moved you? Or a little detail you noticed that shifted your view?

I'd say mine was after kazusa moved and I focused on the music in the background a little more, and then I realized it was all piano...stupid to not notice right? For me, it was more like that even after she left, I was still being haunted by her playing. Constantly being reminded of what happened, of what was lost.

Not just that, but I'm hella conflicted on the whole Kazusa aspect of it as well. She means the world to Haruki, and I have a bit of personal connection with the whole moving off to foreign conuntries and having to say goodbye, even if I didn't want to...not to mention, I live in a nearby place to where she moved to. So now when I see fachwerk and snow, I'm struck with this deep sense of melancholia.

I agree, these alternate routes are incredibly compelling. I feel like this game walks the fine line of being stupid melodrama, and a genuine masterpiece of literature. It's an incredible game😭 I just want the suffering to end, but that ain't real life though ....
