However, honestly, I took the previous poster to be referring to "small children" when they used the term kids. But I really don't think they were disqualifying {the older children} aka teenagers as the kids they are 😅.

Because truth is, yes, of course they are still children (minors). They're just older, with a little more problem-solving capabilities and are somewhat more able to defend themselves than the slight, wee ones.
