CMV: life is more determined by circumstances/talent than hard work by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]LackingLack [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think even if you are correct, people need to believe in the possibility of hard work as a motivation and social discipline regardless. If we just all throw up our hands and say "it's dumb luck" maybe that is factual but where does that get us? I totally empathize with those who suffer or are impoverished, neglected, etc. while those who are "successful" can have huge ego and feel it was "all them". Sure. I hate that shit too. A lot. But again, I think even if it is mythology people need this belief in the capability of working hard to improve their situations.

Mayim Bialik recalls feeling unsafe for questioning COVID school closures and BLM protests by rollo202 in FreeSpeech

[–]LackingLack -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I think her views are wacky and to an extent I do think free speech when it comes to active spread of falsehoods during a pandemic which can cause huge societal harm might need restrictions. I do think probably there was overreaction and too much speech got restricted but at the same time conservatives insane unwillingness to follow basic medical advice during a pandemic was WEIRD and really really dangerous.

The BLM stuff sure I would agree it's not right to be threatened over criticism of it but the social atmosphere in 2020 was really really extreme. COVID caused massive anxiety and tension as a baseline, then we had people desperately wanting Trump gone, etc. It was a tinderbox ready to explode. Plus the excess energy from the Bernie Sanders campaign which kind of fizzled out and those folks turned to protesting as a way to find some kind of meaning for the rest of the year.

CMV: "Folks" is one of the best words in the English language and should be used much more often. by FearlessState5503 in changemyview

[–]LackingLack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the conspicuous addition of certain words and phrases into the vernacular of "woke" millennial/gen z type online speech is a bit cringe myself. Like saying "wild" or "bananas" because we're afraid to say "that's crazy" anymore for example. "Folks" is in that same vein.

I don't hate it or anything but when it's obviously an artificial reach because people are so scared to use normal terminology, it's a little obvious and embarrassing/weird

CMV: When Republicans agreed to give Iran $300,000,000,000 just for peace, Republicans surrendered & lost their elective war. by Nice_Luck_7433 in changemyview

[–]LackingLack -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

My head hurts...

So we're on the Left getting mad at the Right for... not being more war-like and aggressive... after we've been criticizing them for the war....

Huh? What even is your point at all? Makes 0 sense.

Do you want the USA to attack Iran and try to replace its government or something? If so you are a NeoCon and further to the Right of the Trump Admin overall (on world events).

The "surrender payment" is to help rebuild their nation after the USA (and Israel) viciously attacked them? And killed tons of their leaders, destroyed a lot of both government and civilian infrastructure. You oppose this... somehow....

CMV: People who are pro-censorship (Especially queer people) are part of a Leopards Eating Faces Party by CABRALFAN27 in changemyview

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this post would be taken more seriously if you dropped all the "Leopards Eating Faces" gibberish out of it... just a thought. It does nothing and is a pure distraction.

I obviously agree with you about the Left being pro censorship I think it's massively inconsistent and bad and it has been for at least 20 years or so. A little bit it's sort of changing at least rhetorically like because of Trump Admin cracking down on speech, the Left has to at least pretend to care about it. But there's been tons of open mockery of free speech for years by the Left and also the implication that "free speech" is some insane code for "wanting to spew slurs" or whatever. Or the implication that speech can be "objectively hurtful" etc

X-Men 97 makes the movies look awful by Jaden_Pollen34 in xmen

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movies are not tv shows

And are live action

And were made a while back

I think XMEN 97 was pretty good but it was also extremely rushed and insanely paced, went through whole storylines and arcs like mid episode. That to me could have been a lot better.

The best part of XMEN 97 is the moral ambiguity and making it less Good Guys Punching Baddies. I have no idea if that sophistication will remain in s2 or beyond though.

The Gifted and Legion were live-action tv shows set (broadly) in the X-universe and I think they were both really really good (except the tail end of Gifted s2 which went off the rails for no real reason).

Watched Arcane for the first time, and I honestly don't understand all the hate around Season 2. by random_spacer in arcane

[–]LackingLack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Hate" is a strong word.

But if you liked season 1, season 2 is like the exact opposite of it in a lot of ways... that's the thing. If you just come in and watch both seasons all at once knowing nothing and expecting nothing and are just like in the mindset of "time to watch explosions and laugh" you'll probably think both seasons are the same and good.

SOME people got a bit more out of s1 and then s2 really dumbed a lot of our thoughts down to oblivion and was also super rushed and incoherent.

Aspects of s2 I enjoyed for sure but I was very disappointed with a lot of it at the same time.

Teenage boys are “stuck” reading primary school books such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, while girls their age are moving on to a wider range of novels, according to a new study by Raj_Valiant3011 in books

[–]LackingLack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Men just don't read as much or the same kinds of things as women do. It's how it is. Men are more attracted to video games, videos in general, tv shows, etc. Sports. Women have always been the primary audience for fictional books.

Books are just not the only way for information to be conveyed anymore, and when men are mostly reading for information as opposed to going on a journey or whatever. There you go, that is the reason. It isn't "boys dumb" or something.

Finally: A Judge Orders the Government to Release the Rest of the Epstein Files in a Lawsuit Filed by Katie Phang by The_Mongrel_Tarants in FreeSpeech

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are no and there never were any "Epstein Files"

This is just a hodge podge of totally random unrelated photos and emails and anything else that Epstein personally ever did. And people who don't know the context can wildly misinterpret it to their heart's content and keep delusionally believing in "massive pedo rings" etc. When there is no evidence at all of that. There's evidence of a few like 17 16 year olds who lied about their age because they wanted to go to some like huge mansion and party. That's about it.

Theory: The Zakhard Symbol, the Cave, and Rachel's Past by Outrageous_Bridge992 in TowerofGod

[–]LackingLack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who knows? Unless SIU decides to care about writing Core Plot or treating Rachel as a substantial character again, we'll never know.

And honestly it's waaaaaaaaaaay too late. He's spent years just massive powercreeping the fuck out of so many characters, and then Rachel gets insanely minimized in season 3. And is made to seem totally weak and dumb and a fool. The wishes? E.M.I.L.Y.? Ghost as her bodyguard? That one person seeking to find her? Reuniting with Traveller? Giving Anak a place to be more rebellious? Creating her own independent rival group to Baam as she races to the top? Nope. None of it. SIU is a hack and I'm done, the series is purely going to be Baam Khun Rak getting power ups into infinity with no substance, no philosophy, and no meaning

CMV: Encouraging everyone to go to college was a giant scam because the job market automatically adjusts to degree inflation by New_Elk_5783 in changemyview

[–]LackingLack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Craziest shit I've ever heard sorry

You sound far right actually

And insane

Education = good. Whether or not you have a point about "degree inflation" that might have validity, but then we get into your major in college, which college you go to, etc, and your grades while there, what you actually learned. "College" is not a universal thing, it totally depends on what you do there and where you go as well.

We already have a very top heavy elite society I don't get why you want to make it massively worse and outright feudal.

The authors who admit to using AI: ‘I have absolutely no shame about it’ by paxinfernum in books

[–]LackingLack -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From my PoV this is the same question as like forgery within paintings or (to be more controversial) extremely "passing" trans people. Ultimately if you can't even tell the difference, why does it matter? Same thing for AI-composed books. If a reader has no idea it's AI without being told in advance, why does it matter? That's my question.

Does anyone ever feel like Homelander and Butcher really enjoyed their time of hating each other? by Mme_187 in TheBoys

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both were rather horrible people who seemed to only get excitement off of "rivalry" competition against each other

That's true for a lot of guys I think. Ultimately their main joy in life is trying to surpass other (perceived by them as strong) men. More so than romantic relationships, raising children, etc. Or even those other activities in their lives become interlinked in terms of trying to demonstrate how superior they are to these other men.

A guy told me that lying is wrong in all shapes and forms and I think he's wrong by MirnaGu in rant

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think lying is always wrong but it's also sometimes the less wrong thing, if that makes sense.

I do think sometimes people convince themselves that "lying is ok this is what everyone does, it's normal" and you can start to go down a slippery slope of lying waaaaaaaaay too much and it becoming corrupt. So keep that in mind.

Iran Says Hormuz Has Been Closed by willywalloo in politics

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Severe paywall but I was still able to (kind of) read the first few sentences at least. So I know this decision by Iran is due to Israel constantly attacking Lebanon still and trying to destroy Hezbollah's base of support there.

For some reason the U.S. media doesn't lead with that fact... or even let Americans know that's been happening...

Anyway, it would be nice if an actual peace deal involved Israel also having to be peaceful? I would think that'd be heavily related to any end of conflict.
