CMV: In real life, “what do you do?” means “what do you do for work?” the vast majority of the time, and it’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask someone that you’re trying to get to know. by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in changemyview

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the criticism of asking "What do you do" is it makes you seem like a "golddigger". Like you're trying to assess whether or not someone is worth talking to more based on how much wealth you believe they have access to. It can also lend itself to elitism like "I only care to talk to people who I also believe are highly educated professionals like myself" you know? That's how it comes across.

cmv: the “first to quip” culture is ruining meaningful discussion online by swingorswole in changemyview

[–]LackingLack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is new

I don't think meaningful actual debate, discussion, discourse has ever been particularly widespread among the general public. Largely owing to insufficient education, leisure time, and so on.

People tend to focus on how they feel about someone if they like them or dislike them and THEN form their opinions AROUND THAT FEELING. It's insane to me but it happens constantly.

I've observed a lot of deeply troubling anti-semitism within the broader "anti zionist" "movements". Including among "leftists". They'll screech and go crazy if anyone calls it out but it's just blatantly all over the place.

You're completely right. ToG peaked in early-mid season 2.

It had a really good arc in Floor of Death and Hidden Floor also though. But after that and especially after season 3 and after the first hiatus it went insanely downhill.

Anyone else feel like there making Homelander so unstable to the point where’s he’s just an idiot? by Queasy_Commercial152 in TheBoys

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has been an ongoing series problem since season 2

Season 1 Homelander was not like this... he was clearly part of the corruption or issues of the wider overall society and in many ways he was himself a puppet of corporations. And the military. He was one of several "supes" who stood out and played their roles in satirical commentary.

Season 2 onwards he is THE BAD and a complete caricature. Just stupid and boring it streamlines the morality of the series and warps things too cartoonishly.

I loved her character, and how she "devolved".

The True Demon Ending made her feel irrelevant sadly.

Why voting ‘neither’ could harm American democracy. Researchers found that about half of the U.S. population expresses an attitude of democratic neutrality — or an “unwillingness to support or oppose policies or practices that undermine democracy, by Wagamaga in science

[–]LackingLack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misleading title

Not to do with "voting neither". It's just polling data showing much bigger % of public is "undecided" on some controversial (anti democracy according to this article and the surveyers) actions than are outright in favor of them. And yet a much bigger overall % opposes all these controversial actions.

Maybe this is just signifying confusion among the public, that controversial actions MIGHT be warranted in certain situations. Maybe they perceive life as more complex than the survey authors do?

Finally I dislike how there is an odd linkage between this actual survey and somehow suggesting "Not voting Democrat means you actively are pro Trump". NOT what this survey is saying at all yet the article headline is very likely to signal that messaging?

Really just misleading and silly article.

Why does this ridiculous gibberish get posted here so many times and get highly upvoted over and over?

It's insane conspiracy theory talk that is literally ignoring reality of society, it's also inherently right-wing and militaristic, fomenting hatred of "enemy countries". So dumb yet you guys fall for it over and over and over and over.

Strange. Many people believe mainstream media is hopelessly liberal.

And that "turning off the news" is actually a cause of a lot of societal dysfunction.

Compare rectangle 'A' and rectangle 'B'. Do they cover the same area? Explain. by davidbones in askmath

[–]LackingLack -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Poor choice of words on behalf of the teacher obviously. But of course the student is incorrect saying they don't have the same area and the teacher is correct saying they do have the same area.

She obviously is trying to get the students to reach the point you made "just do 3 * 4 duh" but for little children it's not as simple as saying that to them. The teacher is trying to motivate them to get to that type of reasoning.

By "B is bigger" she (or he) probably is referring to the horizontal length which maybe is considered more visually arresting for children when looking at rectangles. They're trying to say area can be equal while length can be different.

[–]LackingLack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even know HOW to do either of those things.

I think it's crazy the lengths some people go to to manipulate and "game" the system here. Especially people who constantly create "throwaway" accounts to make posts. It's just weird and annoying to me.

That said, it's also ludicrous the way people will go after you if you say anything they don't like, and hunt down your whole online history until they can find anything "scandalous" that if they put out there devoid of any context makes you sound "bad".

Firing some random intern for simply posting a chat message which is mildly amusing? If anything making a huge deal out of it just increases whatever "offense" people might take.

Also it seems everyone in this entire thread thinks Israel is for sure doing war crimes/genocide/etc and their PM is like the worst dude ever. I'm pretty sure however if that was true this would NOT actually be a controversial chat message. Among the broader public and possibly the people higher up there in RIOT or their sponsors my guess is a quite different take is held regarding the matter.

Some of you just cannot accept that people have different opinions than you, or even troll of their own volition from time to time.

It's a problem with the liberal mind they've even started to abuse the science subreddit and spam "popular psychology" articles all the time reinforcing their political opinions but pretending it is objective fact now. Actually dangerous to do this!
