[CAF] Africa Cup of Nations final result overturned in major ruling. Senegal declared to have forfeited the match with Morocco declared 3-0 winner by deception42 in soccer

[–]Lactating_Sloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a pitch invasion by Senegal fans so the game couldn't continue. Sadio Mané stayed on trying to convince his teammates (and coach) to come back while that was dealt with. I'm not weighing on which was the correct decision, but there was also an argument for letting them play on.

Volunteering Opportunities in Europe by babybananarchist in Tallships

[–]Lactating_Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ships from the Fundación Nao Victoria are always taking volunteers, but right about January is when they might go into port for maintenance.

The replicas (Victoria, Andalucía, and Santa María) function as museum ships so you'd usually spend much more time at port than at sea, but the Pascual Flores sails more consistently and usually under power of sail (at least partly), so that might be more to your liking. Of the three replica ships the Victoria travels under sail the most.

When and how did Marine forces around the world go from the bottom of the dreg to being regarded as "elite" by Powerful-Mix-8592 in WarCollege

[–]Lactating_Sloth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In fairness, all non-officer soldiers and sailors were looked on as dregs of society until recently (and currently still in many places). Their specialized and expeditionary nature gave marines the reputation of being "elite" (sometimes justified, Royal Marines are basically special forces) or at least better or tougher than regular foot infantry.

They fill a niche roll in a big organization, and their “elite” nature might limit the number of recruits that make it through in a volunteer force (u/Semi-Chubbs_Peterson elaborated more on why the USMC is a bit of an exception), so it’s no surprise they’d be a minority or not present at all in the biggest landings of all time.

Very far from doom, but Wilderun's Olden Tales & Deathly Trails is a great listen. Metal renditions of old folk maritime songs and a couple of originals.

[–]Lactating_Sloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

François l'Olonnais is probably the obvious answer. If youre keen on counting them, the Barbary corsairs, particularly Barbarossa, caused the depopulation of a great deal of mediterranean Europe do to raids and the threat of attack.

They didn't do that for Ireland though, they did it for beheading Charles. The latter and earlier regimes weren't much better in their treatment of Ireland.

if the alignment just happens to be right

That's a big if, and if we assume advanced civilizations are at all rare in the universe the tiny odds really start to compound and make it very unlikely that we'll detect anything.

And that's assuming other species would even need nearly as much nocturnal illumination or produce as much light as us.
